NOTES FROM THE OFFICE March 15, 2023 GREAT NEWS! Mrs. Welch surprised Middle School students this morning with the exciting announcement that she and her husband are expecting their first baby in July! We congratulate her and her husband, and cannot wait to welcome the newest member of the SPXS community! RE-REGISTRATION Thank you to all who have completed the re-enrollment process. This has helped us move along with acceptances for 2023-2024! BEAUTY AND THE BEAST We are very grateful to JPII for rescuing our performance of Beauty and the Beast. Thanks to their generosity, we have a lovely venue for the performances next Friday and Saturday. Please join our Drama performers for one (or both!) of the shows. Friday- 7:00, Saturday– 2:00. It’s sure to be another SPXS spectacular, thanks to our amazing Drama team, led by Ms. Perrault and Mr. Mason. If you have never seen an SPXS musical, you will be blown away! TRAFFIC I know traffic was challenging this morning by the new Dennis-Yarmouth Intermediate/Middle School. There seemed to be an issue with the lights, which might have caused the slowdown. Hopefully, that is the case, and the issue won’t continue. In the event of a back-up, an alternate route is to go around the back of the school: Take a left on White’s Path- at the lights by Cape Cod Five Take a right ono N. Dennis Rd. Take a right onto N. Main St. Take a right onto Wood Rd., and another right to enter school property

FROM NURSE ANNIE March is National Nutrition Month ● Be a role model for your child. Eat any fruit, vegetable, protein or healthy fat you want your child to eat. Watching parents eat healthy meals instills healthy eating habits from an early age. ● Involve children in meal planning. As children grow up, encourage them to take part in the preparation and cooking of meals. ● Allow children to express their hunger and fullness. Avoid requiring your child to clean his/her plate. Doing so can cause them to ignore their body's signals about hunger and fullness. This can lead to overeating. Discuss what it feels like to be hungry and talk about how it feels to be full.
● Breakfast every day is important, but what they eat in the morning is crucial too. Choosing breakfast foods that are rich in whole grains, fiber, and protein while low in added sugar may boost kids' attention span, concentration, and memory — which they need to learn in school. ● Choose healthy snacks. A snack is a smaller portion with one or two food groups that would fit in one or both hands. Make sure kids are snacking only when hungry
DID YOU KNOW? Only 11% of kids eat the recommended 5 servings of fruit and vegetables each day When the right foods are offered at the right times, snacks can plan an important role in managing kids’ hunger and boosting nutrition. A well-timed snack can even out spikes in hunger and provide energy boost between meals. Snacks can keep younger children from getting so hungry that they become cranky, and they can keep older kids from overeating at larger meals. For picky eaters of all ages, snacks can be added insurance that they’re getting necessary nutrients. Whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, eggs and cheese are nature’s perfect convenience food. These should be your first choice for snacks. Beyond fruits and vegetables, the best snacks are low in sugar, high in protein, are unrefined and/or contain a short list of ingredients. The best snacks satisfy hunger while helping meet our daily dietary needs. Here are some easy suggestions: Grains Vegetables fruits protein Whole grain crackers baby carrots apple slices cheese Air popped popcorn cucumber slices grapes hard-boiled egg Whole wheat bread sliced peppers berries low sugar yogurt oatmeal edamame melon cubes rolled up turkey Beverages: water, tap, sparkling or seltzer, is best. Sugar sweetened beverages are the largest source of added sugars in the American diet for all ages. They are the 3rd largest source of calories for americans ages 2 and over For more information/resources: https://www.eatright.org/
ANNUAL POSTURAL SCREENING As required by State Law, the annual Postural Screening will be performed the week of 3/27 during PE. The purpose of this is to screen for early signs of possible spinal problems in students in grades 5 through 8. This screening is not a diagnostic service but rather a program to identify those who may need further evaluation. Students with a physician’s spinal evaluation noted on their physical dated within the last 12 months will be exempt. If your child has any unusual findings, you will be notified by letter and asked to have your child evaluated by his/her physician as a precaution. The majority of students will exhibit no findings. Female students are asked to wear a camisole, halter top, or sports bra under their gym clothes to school on the day of the screening. This type of clothing permits a more accurate observation of the back. Boys will be asked to remove their shirts. Boys and girls will be screened separately. If you have any further questions regarding this program, please feel free to contact Nurse Annie 508-398-6112 or aagurkis@spxschool.org.
