WELCOME Established in 1863, Windermere School is one of the United Kingdom’s leading small boarding schools. Our unrivalled location in the heart of the English Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage site and area of outstanding beauty, offers a stimulating environment in which to develop and achieve both inside and outside the classroom. Windermere has a long history of welcoming international pupils to our special community, and currently has 24 nationalities on the school roll. As a Round Square school we share an ambitious goal to develop every pupil through academic, physical, cultural and spiritual experiences. Pupils will stay in a traditional English boarding school with an amazing view of Lake Windermere and the surrounding mountains. Every year we welcome pupils aged 12-18 from across the world to our excellent International Summer School. We create an environment where pupils develop their language skills as every activity is conducted in English, whether they are rock climbing, sailing, or just relaxing with new found friends. Our school motto ‘Vincit qui se vincit’ – one conquers who conquers oneself – exemplifies Windermere’s commitment to challenging our pupils to excel and achieve their potential.

LEARN ENGLISH Dedicated English classes take place on weekday mornings, with pupils receiving 3.5 hours of academic tuition per day and informal tuition throughout their time with us. Pupils have a fantastic opportunity to apply their new skills during the afternoons when they take part in their chosen activity courses. Pupils coming to Windermere International Summer School will mix with British pupils from the UK who are attending our holiday courses. All our courses are taught in English, so we recommend pupils have knowledge of English, ideally to B1 level. Teachers plan lessons covering a huge range on topics, from home and food to the environment and agriculture. We use many teaching techniques during our lessons to ensure pupils improve their four main language skills; reading, writing, speaking and listening. Throughout the course, we run academic workshops where teachers gauge pupil comprehension and adapt the syllabus accordingly to focus on the specific needs of each individual. Many of the lessons will tie into the activities and excursions giving a fully immersive approach to learning.
COURSE OPTIONS All courses include English tuition and last for two weeks. Summer School pupils can choose from three exciting activity programmes, sailing, outdoor adventure or musical theatre. A different option can be chosen each week. Summer Sailing This course is based at Hodge Howe, the school’s watersport centre, nestled in the woodland on the shores of Lake Windermere. The course is suitable for all sailing abilities. We are one of only two schools in the UK to be accredited by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). With lessons from our qualified, experienced and friendly watersports team, you will progress through the RYA syllabus, collecting awards as you complete each level and you will receive a logbook at the end of your course. We have a range of boats to suit all sailors, from our brand new fleet of Zests to the racing team’s Fevas. All equipment is provided and lunch is served on lake the shore each day. Each sailing week comprises of 5 days with three hours sailing per day. The ratio is 6 pupils to each instructor ensuring everyone gets personal tuition. The course teaches everything from knots to seamanship. Pupils can combine morning sailing with afternoon adventure if they do not wish to take English lessons. This would equate to 6 hours of sailing per day. Cost - £2800 per 2 week course
West End at Windermere Windermere School has a long and successful history in the performing arts. Recent school performances have included Hairspray, Legally Blonde, Grease and Shrek. We are delighted to introduce this new musical theatre specialisation to our International Summer School for 2022. Our ‘One Week Only’ production company, as Mr Lightburn prefers to call it, is where pupils come together to perform a West End Show in just five days. Previous courses have performed Matilda, Annie, Marry Poppins, The Wizard of Oz or a medley of songs from the most popular shows from the West End of London. Under the guidance of our professional choreographer and director Ashley Johnson, along with his experienced and enthusiastic staff, using the school’s auditorium and extensive collection of props, you will plan and rehearse a musical, culminating in a performance at the end of each week in front of a live audience. Weather you are the leading star or a member of the chorus line, it will be a week to remember for the rest of your life. This course is suitable for all abilities, but a reasonable level of spoken English is required. Cost - £2800 per 2 week course
Adventure Under the expert instruction of specialist Adventure staff, pupils taking part in this course will participate in all manner of exciting activities, ranging from mountain biking, abseiling and rock climbing, to kayaking, ghyll scrambling, caving and survival skills. In case you are wondering, and save you from Googling it, ghyll scrambling is where you climb a mountain using just a river as your path. You will climb up waterfalls, swim under rocks and have a final swim at the top enjoying the views having climbed a mountain in an unusual way. This course has a strong emphasis on both personal development in leadership and outdoor skill acquisition and your week is sure to be action-packed with a heavy dose of adrenaline. This course is suitable for all levels of ability, but a good level of spoken English is required to ensure your safety and that of others. Pupils can combine sailing with adventure if they do not wish to take English lessons. Cost - £2800 per 2 week course
