Never argue with the referee. Control your temper at all times.
Work equally hard for yourself and your team.
Be a good sport. Applaud all good play whether by your team or your opponent.

  of the fun.
- Never ridicule or yell at players for making a mistake or not winning.
- Be reasonable in my demands on player’s time, energy and enthusiasm

Junior Club Rules

North Otago Rugby is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the well-being
of all its members. The Union believes that it is important that members, coaches,
administrators and parents associated with the club should, at all times, show respect
and understanding for the safety and welfare of others. As a member of the NORFU
JAB you are expected to abide by the following junior club rules:
- All members should behave in an appropriate manner as set out in the Players and
Coaches Code of Conduct and be familiar with NZRFU Drugs Policy, the Club’s
Child Protection Policy and the Laws of the game of Rugby
- Open communications between players and club officials need to be maintained
- Any abuse, bad language or offensive behavior from spectators and/or children
towards referees, coaches and players will not be tolerated and the North Otago JAB
committee has the ability to sight and discipline anyone through the code of conduct
using its judicial panel.

                   Parents Code of Conduct
The NORFU JAB has adopted the following Parents Code of conduct as
recommended by NZ Rugby. This code reflects the Clubs intention to develop all
players to the limit of their ability and ambition without losing sight of the fact that
the game is for fun and enjoyment. By adopting this Code Parents will support the
Club in developing well rounded players capable of winning friends and respect
throughout the game. By adopting this code Parents agree to:

- Foster enthusiastic participation and educate your child to play by the laws of the game
- Instill in children an understanding and enjoyment of the value of coaching
- Acknowledge the value and importance of volunteer coaches and referees. They give
freely of their own time and resources to provide rugby for children and resources to
  provide rugby for children
- Recognize that children play rugby for their own fun, they are not there to entertain you
and they are not miniature internationals
- Encourage a child who has made a mistake during a game, never ridicule.
- Applaud good play by your team and by the members of the opposing team, children
  learn best by example.
- Teach children that an honest effort is as important as victory so that defeat is accepted
  without undue disappointment
- Condemn bad language
- Try not to shout continually at children, shout occasionally, and for them, remember
                          IT’S ONLY A GAME…
JAB RULES
Rippa Rugby: 5/6 YEAR OLDS – Beginning Rugby
The following rules are included to provide consistency throughout our competition. Please
be conversant with them, and coach, referee and play to their letter and spirit.
BALL SIZE: Size 2.5
RIPPA RUGBY OBJECTIVE: To promote run, catch, pass and also attack and defense
skills in a fun and enjoyable environment.
Number of players: played with two teams of equal numbers. It is ideal to have no more
than 5/6 in each team.
Coaches/Referees: Coaches of both teams can referee or direct the game from the field,
RULES – “COACHING FOR U5 – U6 RUGBY”
Start: Centre of field with a free pass. To make a free pass the player starts with the ball in
two hands. When the referee calls ‘Play’ the player passes backward to a member of their
own team.

FREE PASS: Used to restart play on turnover of possession. Free passes cannot take place
within five meters of the opposition try-line. Instead of line-outs, a free pass is awarded to the
non-offending team, opposite where the ball went out of play.

DEFENDERS: Must remain five meters back from a free pass. Defenders can’t move off
that line until the ball leaves the hand of the player making the free pass.

RIPPING: to complete a rip one of the two flags from the ball carriers belt must be removed.
The only person that can be ripped is the ball carrier. The ripper holds the flag above their
head and shouts “RIP!” then places the rip on the ground.

BALL CARRIRER: After being ripped, they must pass the ball within 3 steps. After the
ball carrier has passed the ball the rip is replaced so they can rejoin play

OFFSIDE: Only occurs at the rip. All players on the defending team must get back behind
where the rip was made.

KNOCK ON: If there is no advantage from the knock on, the non-offending team has a free
pass where the knock on took place

KICKING: There is no kicking in Rippa Rugby
GAMES: Approximately 10/15 minutes each half

REFEREEING:
  1. Shout the number of rips when rip is made – maximum of 6 rips before hand-over
  2. Blow whistle only when play is to stop
  3. Enjoy yourself and encourage children to develop excellence in skill use

RECOMMENDED INDIVIDUAL SKILLS

                                    Pre Match Protocol

A meeting of the referee and both teams’ coaches should precede all games:
 What they’ll do in the event of score blowouts (if a team is winning by 35 points or
more then the game must be evened up)
 Player numbers (games must be played with even numbers)
 Referee (If an official referee is not named and available the first team named
provides the referee). Unless a suitable referee is found.
 Referees check boot studs for sharpness, and that all players are wearing a mouth
      guard
 If an associate referee is appointed in the 11/12 year grade pushing is allowed in
scrums as long as both coaches agree.

Setting up and after match ground clearance

Clubs with the home games are to have all grounds set up. Rippa fields are to be organized by
the teams playing on the day. For teams that play on WCS 1 the keys for the main ground are
to be collected and returned from the Union Office.
Mouth Guards
The wearing of a mouth guard in an approved manner is compulsory for all players at all
levels of New Zealand Domestic Rugby. Mouth guards must also be worn in all practice
situations. If any kid has no mouth guard then they are NOT to play.
