The rams are proven as superb both maternal and terminal sires, the ewes bred pure, or put to cross should provide an excellent return. Satchells - Craig Bradbury Where the Northies are fortunate, is in the distinct types of both hill and park who are renowned for their maternal ability, able to produce an impressive return crop “straight from the field”. No doubt this has assisted in the increasing use of the Northie for breeding Cheviot mules and North Country Cheviot cross breeding ewes in addition to the use of the exceptional pure ewe, hill or park type suited to all types of land. In recent years the Northie has witnessed an increasing demand from farmers who wish to finish store lambs, hitting the desired weight without being too fat and of course, avoiding the additional expense of high feed inputs. This has led to an increasing interest both in the sale ring and direct to abattoirs, who recognise the improvement North Country Cheviot based females has made on producing easily fleshed lambs, consistently reaching the magic 21 kg. In 1912 breeders in Caithness and Sutherland formed the North Country Cheviot Breeders Association for the purpose of holding shows and sales. After the Second With the markets demanding more uniform lambs, the North World War, in 1945, this association was reformed into the existing North Country Country Cheviot tups are also sought after for crossing onto Cheviot Sheep Society. NORTHIE ABOUT BREED TYPES THE BREED PARK TYPE The North Country Cheviot - a big, long, rugged white sheep which combines thriftness and healthiness with prolificacy and strong maternal qualities. It is the largest of all the UK Hill breeds and is particularly suited to grassy hills and uplands, though will adapt to most environments. Most North Country Cheviot ewes are bred pure and there is a keen demand for A bigger, all classes of pure bred stock - rams, ewes and lambs. North Country Cheviot heavier type of ewes, found on some of hardest ground in the country, are particularly kind sheep produced mothers, easy to handle at lambing time, with few lambing problems. They can on the fertile produce quality lambs under the most rigorous and demanding conditions and & productive are noted for their longevity. Draft ewes are sold to lower ground farms at about ground of five years old and consistently prove great performers, producing another two or Caithness & three crops of lamb. the Borders North Country Cheviot ewes thrive in a wide range of grazing conditions. On marginal and low land she has traditionally been crossed with breeds such as the Border Leicester to produce Scotch Half Bred or the Blue Faced Leicester to produce the very popular Cheviot Mule. North Country Cheviot Rams have consistently proved their worth as crossing sires. The different types of North Country Cheviot ensure that crossing rams are available to meet most conditions. Another important factor of the breed is their working lives are considerably longer than most other breeds. The attraction of the North Country Cheviot (and NCC cross) lamb for finishers is it’s ability to retain leanness and conformation at a wide range of weights. It is suitable for both short and long keep finishing systems and can provide a carcase of the highest quality. HILL TYPE We are impressed with the North Country Cheviot ewe’s ability to convert grass into milk, the ewes are excellent mothers with our own flock being low maintenance. The demand for Cheviot Mule ewe lambs is increasing as they become more popular and the wether lambs always kill well straight from the grass. NORTH COUNTRY CHEVIOT W & J THOMSON VERSATILITY HOWNAM GRANGE Because of it’s carcase qualities and it’s versatility the North Country Cheviot plays a key role in the UK sheep industry. The North Country Cheviot can be crossed successfully with many other breeds and is used more extensively and to greater effect in crossing programmes that any other hill breed, particularly in the hill and uplands. The North Country Cheviot and it’s crosses consistently provide the leanness and conformation demanded by today’s markets. In store and prime markets North Country Cheviot and North Country Cheviot cross lambs constantly gain higher prices that other hill breeds. In the store market the Cheviot cross lambs provide a premium compared to other pure bred hill lambs. As a result more and more producers are using North Country Cheviot Rams on their hill ewes to increase returns. Many lower ground prime lamb producers are also finding that using breeding ewes such as the Cheviot Mule adds extra quality to the finished lamb - superior conformation and finish. DALRACHIE PRODUCING TOP-QUALITY Producing top-quality and hardy Cheviot Mule lambs with length, depth and tight skins is proving a winning formula for husband and wife duo Alan and Sarah-Jane Forbes from Dalrachie, Ballindalloch. Over the last few years, the Cheviot Mule has grown in popularity with sheep producers across the country, earning a premium in the sale ring for breeders who sell ewe lambs throughout the autumn. For Alan and Sarah-Jane, it’s the annual sale of breeding ewe lambs at United Auctions’ Huntly Mart which has helped put with the couple’s best scanning to date at 176%. “Ewes which are tupped to the Bluefaced Leicester go out their name on the map, selling tremendous Cheviot Mule ewe lambs to a top of £136 per head. The duo first to winter grazing where the weather and ground is a little kinder on the older ewes,” commented Sarah-Jane. introduced the North Country Cheviot breed to the farm in 2015 after purchasing 50 cast hill ewes from the “We always have the ewes scanned by the third or fourth week in January and its then that we take the Achentoul and Croick flocks. Dalrachie is primarily a 350-acre upland beef farm, producing quality Charolais twin and triplet bearing ewes home to avoid stress when travelling later in their pregnancy. “The flock is fed cross store cattle bred from the family’s 120-strong Simmental cross suckler herd. accordingly to the type of year, with twin and triplet bearing ewes introduced to Premium Ewe Rolls six weeks prior to lambing. Those carrying a single lamb come home three weeks before lambing and receive 300 grams An additional 160 acres is rented near Aberlour, allowing Alan and Sarah-Jane to run 350 breeding ewes and per head.” All ewes receive their Heptovac vaccination three weeks prior to lambing and are wormed and 70 replacement hill Cheviot ewe hoggs, alongside the cattle enterprise. “My father ran a flock of 1200 hill dosed, with triplet ewes shed off and fed twice a day to maximise their intake. Home-grown silage is fed adlib Cheviot ewes on the Kintradwell Estate in Sutherland, where I grew up, before moving on to Mid Gruinards, and all ewes and lambs have mineral tubs all year round to ensure energy levels are correct. Huntly Mart has where my family and I ran our own flock of 600 hill Cheviot ewes,” began Sarah-Jane. “From a young age, I become Alan and Sarah-Jane’s main market for selling stock, with all breeding female lambs, cast ewes and learnt how efficient and versatile the hill ewe was and when Alan mentioned he wanted to introduce sheep prime lambs sold through the centre. The majority of breeding ewe lambs are sold on the first Saturday in to the farm, I knew the Cheviot would suit the type of ground here. It was also an advantage that I was September, with some of the twin and triplet ewe lambs sold at the next sale on the second Thursday of the familiar with the breed and the breeders, having worked on so many different flocks during the lambing month. “Since we started, we have sold a total of 500 Cheviot Mule ewe lambs to average £114 per head, with season.”Before buying the Northies, Alan and Sarah-Jane decided to visit some local sales and find out our top price to date being £136 achieved in 2019,” said Sarah-Jane, pointing out that they have returned and what type of sheep sold well in the area. It became apparent to them fairly quickly that the Mule sold well in new buyers, with one lot having sold to Northern Ireland last year. “Last year was our first year selling Suffolk Morayshire and Aberdeenshire, and although the Scotch Mule demand seemed to be fulfilled easily, there cross Cheviot ewe lambs and they averaged £96, having sold to a top of £106.” weren’t many Cheviot Mules available at the time so they could definitely see a market. “The North Country Cheviot hill ewe is very efficient and she will happily produce and rear two lambs year on year at not a lot All lambs are double vaccinated with Heptovac, wormed every six weeks and mineral dosed every three. of cost,” said Sarah-Jane, pointing out that some of the flock ewes are eight-years-old and are still going Wedder lambs and ewe lambs not suitable for breeding are sold from mid-August onwards, with wedder strong. “Since breeding the Cheviot Mules, we’ve found this cross an extremely efficient female and one of lambs regularly averaging £80 per head. Admittedly, Alan and Sarah-Jane have always purchased stock the most cost-effective Mules to run. The females are still worth quite a bit at the end of their lives and we tups on a budget, with an £1800 Kirkstead Bluefaced Leicester purchased at Kelso Ram Sales in 2018 being find we can sell the ewe lambs to any customer, whether they are on high or low ground farms and know they the dearest tup to date. “We don’t pay a fortune for tups because the figures have to add up at the end of will do well.”Initially, the couple ran all the Northies with the Bluefaced Leicester to maximise cashflow and the day,” commented Sarah-Jane. “The Kirkstead ram left us lambs with great size and quality and the two allow them to build up flock numbers, but since increasing the flock, they have been able to breed pure and Slipperfield tups purchased in 2016, have left very stylish lambs. As a wedding gift, Alan and Sarah-Jane cross. “In 2019, we ran 75 hill Cheviot ewes pure, with 220 ewes tupped to the traditional Bluefaced Leicester were extremely grateful to be given the pick of Joyce Campbell’s Armadale shearlings in 2017. and the remainder to the Suffolk to produce Suffolk cross Cheviot ewes,” said Alan. “We didn’t want to put all our eggs in one basket with the one cross and have found that the Suffolk cross Cheviots also sell well They chose a tup which was bred out of a Fleurachy ewe and went back to a South Balkeith sire. He was later through Huntly. The market has certainly grown for the Cheviot Mules and the standard of the ewe lambs named Armadale Dirty Deeds and has bred long, feminine females with great skins, three of which won the has definitely got higher.”For the first three years, Alan and Sarah-Jane sourced broken mouth replacement breeding sheep championship at the Royal Northern Spring Show in 2019. “We ran Dirty Deeds with a cut of ewes at both Lairg and Dingwall, and then in 2018, they were able to keep the first of their own home-bred broken mouth Achentoul ewes which we purchased at Lairg,” said Sarah-Jane, adding that they will have four replacements. “I was working full-time when we started with the flock so we needed ewes that knew the job of his two-shear sons destined for Lairg later this year. “The corrects from the same Achentoul batch that and would get on with it at lambing time,” said Sarah-Jane. “We were also on a budget so broken mouth ewes year hold the record at Lairg of £175 so they are great ewes with tremendous bloodlines.”As well as being were our only option if we wanted the right bloodlines. This year, we topped up our replacements with some kept busy on the farm, Sarah-Jane also works as a bookkeeper at Knockando Woolmill, situated 12 miles from ewe lambs from Dunbeath Estates but through time, we would like have enough females to breed all home- Dalrachie. In 2018, Knockando Woolmill used wool from the Dalrachie ewes to produce products, which has bred replacements.” since led to Dalrachie North Country Cheviot throws being available to purchase from Pad Lifestyle in Harvey Nichols. It’s clear to see that the North Country Cheviot breed is ticking all the boxes for Alan and Sarah-Jane All ewes at Dalrachie are given a pre-tupping mineral dose prior to running with the tups and are also treated Forbes, allowing them to produce cost-effective females which can go on and do well on any type of farm. for fluke and worms at the start of October. Tups head out with the ewes around October 27 to allow for Alan “Due to the North Country Cheviot’s versatility, we reckon the breed has a stable and bright future ahead and Sarah-Jane to get lambs on the ground by the third week in March. The ewes regularly scan over 170%, and will continue to breed top-quality lambs for sheep producers,” concluded Sarah-Jane. 10 NORTH COUNTRY CHEVIOT VERSATILE. HARDY. PROFITABLE. 11

THE HILL BREED FOR US A WELL FLESHED SHEEP Producing high quality stock for contract farming is exactly what the hill-type Cheviot flock, Attonburn does for Robert and Becca Rennie. Robert and Becca have recently started contract farming two years ago on behalf of Co Roxburgh Estates where they run 2200 hill- type Cheviots across 2500 acres between Mowhaugh and Attonburn, both based next door to each other in Kelso. The great surroundings and scenery reaches a top of 1847 ft. “Cheviots are the hill-breed for us, they are real flashy, well fleshed sheep, that are hard to go past. They work well for our system having easy care and big strong hardy bodies,” said Robert. The team run 400 of the flock to cross with a Texel to produce good fleshy lambs and nice ewe lambs to sell. Before taking on the estate the couple dispersed their flock of Beltex and Texel’s, to pay for the machinery and labour of the upcoming contract farm. However, they have since purchased a few unregistered Texel’s to produce tups to use on the Cheviots. Along with the sheep Becca’s heart lies in the cattle alongside Robert’s father, Andrew Rennie, where they run 22 Limousin crosses, and often produce great show potential calves. They are looking to build the cattle travelling all across Scotland – Lockerbie, Lairg, Oban, Dingwall and Kelso – to keep their markets wide and numbers up over the next few years with just now having half Limousin’s and half Limousin crossed with the gain new customers constantly. It was worth the trip up to Lairg last year as they sold their best, the two- British Blue. shear, Attonburn Watch Out for £3800 to Andrew Elliot. Another two-shear, Mowhaugh Warload, made the same money at Lairg, this time heading home to Murdo MacDonald. On the flip side, Robert and Becca will All the livestock on the farm are fed by Davidson Animal Feeds products, which Robert and Becca cannot buy in two or three tups each year. The first purchase for the estate was Thistle Venturer, which cost the criticise, they stay loyal to the one business. “The order and delivery service at Davidsons is excellent, they couple 2100gns from Rosemary Cameron. The team have eight sons to sell next year which are looking ‘very will never see you stuck and really care about you. It is a simple system for ordering, and we have never promising’. had any complications, the customer care is exceptional,” said Robert. The Cheviot’s are fed on ewelac rolls, with a 18% protein it is a high energy feed, whilst the lambs are given Pearl lamb pellets, 16% protein, to help “Venturer has shown strong breed characters, confirmation and good skin, so we are hoping the sons will support them through the winter, to fatten any cull tup lambs which didn’t make the grade. The Texel’s need develop over the next few months,” said Robert. Last year the flock bought in 11 new stock tups to make their strong power to compete in the industry, so they are on the TNT Nut, to give them the final condition they own stamp on the flock and to get the flock going. One of the stock tups this year is Woodside Wahoo, which require for sale time. “The Cheviot’s we have found to have fewer prolapses and the ewes are a lot milkier, came from Michael Elliot, Kelso, when they both ventured up to Lairg. The two-shear is a son of Inkstack whilst the TNT Nut brings out the Texel tups seriously, it fills them out, and produces big strong powerful Victor, and took the second top price that day. The flock’s store lambs are mainly sold privately, with the tups,” said Becca. As a result of this feeding, the couple have managed to produce top-end sale prices, bottom end going through United Auctions, Stirling. Last year, the ewe lambs averaged £75 for 620. Lambing is always a busy period for the Rennie’s, a worker from Ireland comes over to help them through the busy time. Everything is lambed inside so that all sheep can be recorded, everything can be kept an eye on more through a shed than it can be out on a hill… Across the two farms, the flock scans around 157%, with only an 8% loss from scanning to weaning. The couple believe this is due to watching everything so carefully, there is someone with the sheep 24 hours during lambing. For hygiene purposes, they put shavings down in lambing pens rather than straw to reduce the risk of spreading any diseases. “Not only is this a cleaner method but it is better for lambs for getting up on their feet,” said Becca. There is many things Robert and Becca wish to change to make things more practical and to suit their way of doing things. The future of the contract farming for the Rennie’s is to produce high quality stock, get them hardier quicker and cull anything that brings problems to the flock, for easier management in later times. The flock want to produce only the best, to keep up with the times. As for the breed, the couple believe there is a strong demand with many new breeders jumping ship to join the Cheviots with a lot of current breeders expanding. “It is easy to see the benefits with the breed, whether crossing or kept pure. They are hardy, well fleshed and flashy sheep, they are easy management and produce plenty of lambs,” commented Robert. With just being newly into the contract the couple will be taking on a few shows, to get their name out there, over the forthcoming years to include; the Royal Highland and Kelso. There is a lot set for this couple in their contract farming, so watch this space… 16 NORTH COUNTRY CHEVIOT VERSATILE. HARDY. PROFITABLE. 15

AS FAR AS SHEEP GO THE weaned in July. At this time they also receive a mineral drench. Most years there is a pick of lambs ready to go straight to Exeter then. NCC IS HARDIER AND EASIER Sam has become a firm believer in worm egg counts. Stock is then treated accordingly, rather than on a regular basis. “One year the lambs had terrible scour and the test revealed there was a problem with TO KEEP THAN OTHERS coccidiosis. That showed me testing can be very handy,” explains Sam. Lambs are shorn in August – except any near to finishing. “I then turn them away for six weeks and forget about them. One of the benefits of a Cheviot is that it will never get too fat but keep growing so you can take a finished lamb to heavier weights,” says Sam. At this point he will pick out the best 20 tup lambs. These move to the better keep, are fed from October with the best 10 retained the following March. The North Country Cheviot ticks more than just one box for Sam Pedrick at Brimley Farm, Bovey Tracey, in Devon. “It’s a lottery at lambing as to which ram lambs should be castrated. In August I’m usually sick as a dog picking out the best tup lambs because some of the wethers are always better than some that didn’t get ringed at lambing,” admits Sam. A majority of the shearling rams are sold privately off the farm. In the past In fact, the breed is a no brainer as far as he is concerned. And the returns he achieves from his 170-strong two years the best have gone to the NSA Wales and Border ram sale in September. Last year he averaged ewe flock speak for themselves. “For me, the Cheviot is very easy on the eye. And if you are looking at a flock 400gns for half a dozen and was delighted with his trade. He also entered the society sale at Monmouth at of sheep every day you have got to like what you see: Whatever the weather they always look the business,” the end of August. Here he achieved 450gns for a gimmer by Nun Cote Nook Tell Tale. This ewe was judged says Sam. “The breed is hardier so easier to keep than some others – as far as sheep go. All parts of the Interbreed Champion at Chagford Show a few weeks earlier – an achievement which, for Sam, surpassed enterprise are marketable: Female trade is very strong at the moment and the wether lambs are also worth reserve breed champion with his old ram Broomhillbank Viper at Devon County and the same title awarded to something.” a shearling ram by Gospelhall Spot at Royal Cornwall Show. “In the show ring a good North Country Cheviot will always hold its own in an interbreed: There is nowhere to hide any faults in conformation and they are Sam’s great interest, however, is in the breeding ewe. And after 15 years he is now seeing the results of a such ‘showy’ sheep. Their presence catches the attention of any open-minded good judge,” says Sam. breeding programme which has resulted in a flock which is bringing home the spoils both in the county show In fact, Sam believes the breed is increasing in popularity across all sectors of the sheep industry. “In the ring and at national sales. His grandfather Maurice had, for many years, kept Cheviots crossed with Scotch past few years many people – especially those around my age who also go out to work – have seen the light Black Face and Suffolks at Brimley. As a teenager Sam developed an interest in the breed and, when 14 years about the Cheviot,” says 29-year old Sam. “They like the idea of a good quality sheep which has come off old, went to Tavistock market and bought his first pedigree North County Cheviot ram. In 2011 he crossed the lower quality ground going on and doing on their farm. And the ewes last; it’s quite normal for a six- or seven- Scottish Border for the first time and bought a ram from both Allanshaws and Stobshiels at Kelso. Since then crop ewe still be holding her own in a flock.” As a result, Sam keeps back 99 ewe lambs each year. Of those he hasn’t looked back and is a regular at Lockerbie, Kelso and Builth. Last year he purchased Allanshaws about half go to ram as gimmers and the rest are sold pre-tupping. Last year they achieved £145/head. And XXXX which was picked out for characteristics very true to type in the hope the ram will keep the flock 20 older ewes averaged £80 each. Despite a continued demand for his stock – both commercially and from uniform. other breeders – Sam is strongly considering cutting back his flock. “I am getting more and more particular as to the type of ewe I want to keep. It’s a case of less is more,” he explains. “There’s also a likelihood we are in “He might not be as strong as some I bought before – especially a Philiphaugh ram. The Gospelhall sheep I for a second dry summer in three years.” bought at Lockerbie in 2015 has probably had the most influence on the flock,” says Sam. “There is no doubt it takes at least 10 years to establish a flock as you want it. I wouldn’t say I was there yet but the ewes are And it is looking like this year will be the first since 2011 when he does not need to buy in fresh blood as he definitely better than they were - there is much more quality throughout them. “I really enjoy the breeding is very happy with the way all five of his stock rams are breeding. As nearly every breeder has uttered this side of sheep. It’s nice to have something to build on every year and then sell breeding stock. In the fat lamb spring, Sam has some cracking stock he is bitterly disappointed will not be out on the showing circuit. You trade once they’re gone that’s it; there’s only one place they are destined.” This side of the enterprise has can be sure, however, nothing will be left to chance to ensure he is at the top of the line in 2021. also held its own. Last year lambs averaged £88.50. These would have levelled at 45kg lw and were mostly sold through Exeter market. Any hog rams which were not going to make the grade as breeding rams were marketed the same way and achieved £100. And, like most, Sam cashed in on the strong cull ewe trade at the beginning of March to average £91/head with the best reaching £124. This is not a hill farm but the 36ha (90-acres) are all old pasture so no clover-rich leys. Sam’s biggest expense is 6t of nuts at lambing time for doubles and trebles. “I run a very low input system. Lambs are finished off grass alone.” This year the flock scanned at 170%. Most years the figure would fluctuate 5% either side of this mark. “Like many others we had a lot of trebles this year (19) and 17 empties. With that trade as it was I was out looking for them – which is unheard of usually,” said Sam. Ewes lamb outdoors from late March. “This might just be the only time of year I wonder why I keep Cheviots: they aren’t the easiest to catch if they need help lambing outside!” admits Sam who houses the trebles. Thereafter ewes and lambs are rotated around the farm onto fresh pasture. Doubles have the best of keep but are shut out of mowing grass on May 1st. A month later ewes are shorn. “We are lucky Cheviot wool is such a high quality and therefore pays better than other breeds but wool still deserves more recognition being a sustainable natural fibre. More should be made of this; the industry should be out there promoting it better,” believes Sam who is busy shearing for other producers throughout the season. SUCCESS FOR RY CHEVIOT S GREENBANK WITH NCC TH COUNT HE EP SOCIE Moving to North Country Cheviots has proved a OR T N Y success for the Iredale family at Greenbank Farm and a decision the family haven’t regretted. Farming at Greenbank in the heart of the Lake District near Patterdale isn’t the easiest existence, with land going up to 3000ft on Helvellyn & St Sundays the sheep have to be hardy to survive let alone thrive but that is what the Iredale’s have found the North Country Cheviot is capable of here. Tom, 33 & Charlene farm alongside Tom’s parents Peter & Beverly, they are the 3rd generation to farm here & with young family themselves are keen to show the next generation a great way of life. Farming 1450 sheep across two farms, mainly North Country Cheviot with a smaller number of Swaledales, Texel’s & a crossing flock, the family all agree the change to Cheviots some 20 years ago was the right decision. Tom say’s ‘we used to farm Swaledales & Herdwicks but as a commercial flock of sheep they weren’t paying the bills.’ The decision was taken to buy Northie rams from Lairg & Dingwall, crossing them over the existing flock of ewes giving them a finished lamb which was worth more & gradually moving the flock to Cheviot over time. They now run a pure flock of 950 Northie ewes & are in the 3rd year of breeding rams which they have sold at Lockerbie, Draft ewes are also sold through the same sale with some being retained to cross with either a Beltex or Texel for a good finished lamb to sell through the local auction at Penrith. Tom explains how they like to run the majority of their lambs onto the New Year, selling right through to March with lambs averaging 40 – 45kg live weight, last year their lambs sold to average 200ppk & this years are looking like they’ll be 220ppk with the recent increase in trade. Tom says ‘We find the Northie ewe to be very hardy, a real versatile sheep which can really do well on the Cumbrian fells, this year the home wintered ewes have scanned at 147% with those wintered away at 159%’ Tom explains that even at lambing time they find the cheviot ewes are less work ‘We find that lambing the Cheviots is very easy – she doesn’t like much interference & will generally get on with it herself, with the lambs getting straight up onto their feet & away’ The Iredale family firmly believe the change to North Country Cheviot sheep has been the right decision for them & could see benefits for many other breeders in crossing them to produce a lamb for todays’ market, as well as a hardy ewe capable of surviving the harsh landscapes of the fells. 38 NORTH COUNTRY CHEVIOT VERSATILE.
