Others of us stayed tuned in; but let’s be honest, the online experience is VASTLY different than when we are together in the same place. When we do gather for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur we will have a wide variety of feelings. Joy at being together. Trepidation, perhaps, at being together. A little sadness when we recognize what has changed, what we have lost, what will never be the same again. If we take the time to understand what the liturgy of the High Holidays is all about, however, we find that these themes are well represented in our texts. On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur we are meant to stand before God and consider what the passing year has wrought. The changes. The joys. The sadness. We are then supposed to take a moment and think about what we want to have the same, and what we want to change. Most years, I am sure, we let those 3

By Susan Brust There is an expression that goes, "You can choose your friends but you can't choose your family." I do not believe that pertains when people in a congregation become embedded into each other's lives and hearts. My synagogue is my family, albeit my extended family. My safe haven where friends, employees, and clergy are connected in a unique spiritual way. My temple family is always there for each other - in good times and hard times. We have shopping boutiques to raise money for our school and we have unofficial mom’s nights out. We collect money for Shiva platters and attend Minyan services at the bereaved's home. In 2013 it was my turn to be on the receiving end of this support and love. My father became very ill; and my mother couldn't take care of him due to her own handicaps. I needed to take leave of my position as chairperson of our Religious School Committee and had to rely on others to take care of my temple commitments. I received Shabbat dinners and noodle kugels. I had tons of emails, phone calls, and Facebook messages asking me what my family and I needed. Sometimes it was just to talk to an understanding ear and once in a while to ask if my kids needed to be picked up from school so I could visit with my father in hospice. One day, we brought my father to our house for the afternoon and Rabbi came to counsel my parents and took mental notes for the inevitable funeral that was to come. This was to be a life cycle event that would have more meaning because of his direct personal knowledge. As the months went by and my father was outliving the doctors' predictions, I was experiencing a ten out of ten level of anxiety because my younger son's Bar Mitzvah was around the corner. My conversations with the Rabbi and my temple sisters changed from a Bar Mitzvah without my father to a Bar Mitzvah with a great big unknown. What if he died the same week or very close? Even my son was feeling sad and frustrated that there were just no guarantees if Grandpa would make it to the most important day of his young life. I was literally planning a small party for my son and making funeral arrangements for my dad at the same time. The caring and compassion that I got from my temple family was more than sufficient to keep me as grounded and sane as possible during those incredibly difficult months, weeks, days, and hours leading right up to the Bar Mitzvah. The hospice staff kept telling me that it is not unusual for someone to hang on for a special event. I prayed they were correct. It turned out that my father did make it to the service and part of the luncheon. I don't think that there was a dry eye in the sanctuary when my parents presented my son with his tallit that they purchased for him. My dad was a brave and proud man sitting on the Bima in his wheelchair. My son and the rest of our family will cherish those pictures a little more than most. The Rabbi made it apparent to our guests how well he knows us and knew my son since he was three years old. Our pride and joy filled the room. An important life cycle event was made more intimate shared with my temple family. Just a week later, my father passed away. He literally did hang on for that Bar Mitzvah day. This was to be a different type of life cycle event for me. When I called the funeral home; they asked me if I wanted a particular day, and would I be ok with a different Rabbi leading the service? I told them no way; I would sooner change the date. I couldn't comprehend any other scenario. My temple sisters were there again, warming dinners, sending emails with funeral information, organizing my house, and helping me to plan for Shiva. When I met with Rabbi before the service, he had the notes he transcribed the day he met my father. He gently explained to me that there are few traditions that are set in stone. I needed to do what made me comfortable instead of always worrying about others. Rabbi asked me if there were any particular prayers I did or did not want him to say at the funeral. I was so relieved to be able to say, "You know me, you choose." So a week and a half after happy hugs and tears, my temple family shared sad hugs and tears with me. Many attended the funeral. I had over forty people in my home for the Shiva/Minyan service. The sympathy and caring was so evident with every cake and box of cookies that came through my door. My temple family of all generations came to mourn with me. A short time later, some of the parents of my son's Bar Mitzvah class were talking about leaving our temple now that the kids don't have to attend religious school. These are not members who are particularly involved more than the "required" amount. My husband and I were speechless. We told them to remember how many people came to Shiva at my house. How we literally could feel the love of so many that night. Temple is about caring and taking care of all needs. A place where people are genuinely concerned and are there to share in all types of life cycle events. A building that has walls but also extends itself beyond boundaries. I did not have the privilege of belonging to a temple when I was a child. I did grow up with Jewish religious experiences through holiday celebrations, Shabbat candle lighting, and kosher grandparents. I would sometimes attend services with friends at their houses of worship. When I got married and had my first child, my husband and I felt strongly that it was important to raise our children with Jewish beliefs and traditions. We chose Temple Shaarei Shalom in Boynton Beach Florida for various reasons. Continued on page 21 6
July 2021 Welcome to the first monthly article from your Board; articles that will share information about the matters your Board deals with as it conducts the administration and business of the Congregation. The Board meets the third Tuesday of every month. Its members sit as elected trustee, past President, or President of an Auxiliary: Miles Alter Brotherhood Co-President), Emily Bell (STARY President), Lisa Bell (Trustee) Fara Bender (Trustee), Lance Berkowitz (Trustee), Melissa Bowers (Trustee), Abe Bressler (Honorary Trustee/Past President), Ron Cohen (Trustee), Lisa Cuthbertson (Immediate Past President), Eve Garvey (Trustee), Adele Greenblatt (Vice President), Joshua Handwerker (Vice President), Ellen Hulkower (Sisterhood President), Jerry Kaplan (Brotherhood Co-President), Lisa Kronhaus (Trustee), Jay Levine (President), Philip Levine (Trustee), Joan Milowe (Secretary), Alysha Siman (PTO Co-President), Wendy Stahl (Trustee), John Sudenfield (Vice President), Irwin Wecker (Past President), and Lori Weinberg (PTO Co-President). In addition, the staff: Caryn Feldman (Executive Director), Anthony Fratello (Rabbi), Beth Pennamacoor (Cantorial Soloist), and Lisa Tennenbaum (Education Director), Laura Pappas (Youth Advisor) meets with the Board. The fiscal year ends June 30th, so the Board was able to review TSS’ financial status. As before, our Operating Budget was OK. The Board spent much time reviewing the mortgage status. Basically, within five years we will need more income or donations to offset the principal. In this context, we discussed the consideration of selling the building and renting space elsewhere. This proposal is no longer on the table, and there will be a Congregational Meeting (conducted by Rabbi Fratello and President Levine) on Sunday, August 15th to discuss this. An immediate initiative is to create a Fine Arts Committee to review the art works donated over the years and investigate the sale of some of these pieces to raise monies. COVID has affected TSS, as it has affected many organizations, and our Membership has decreased. Much emphasis will be placed on recruiting and retaining members. The Membership Committee (and its sub-committees: Ambassadors, Greeters & Havurah) will be expanded with the addition of a Retention Committee and a Task Force on Planning. There will be an Open House on Sunday, August 22 nd at 10:00 am. If you are interested in working with Membership and/or its sub-committees, please contact Jay Levine, Caryn Feldman, or Joan Milowe. Saturday Night Live, a new monthly series of programs and activities to meet your interests, will be coming. Please contact Jay Levine or Caryn Feldman if you wish to work on this Committee. Guy’s Night, a new men’s Havurah with proposed events ranging from axe-throwing to Scotch-tasting will be beginning. Please contact John Sudenfield for more information. Please contact us if you want to share your expertise and experience, you want to try something new, you want to be part of a dynamic, thriving, exciting Reform congregation. Social Outreach, Action and Reform Committee (S.O.A.R.) Hi! I’m Holly Bromer, Temple Shaarei Shalom’s Social Action Chair. The past year has been challenging in so many ways; however, I am optimistic and inspired by the number of congregants who continue to do acts of kindness and seek ways to repair the world. We have partnered with the Alpert Jewish Family Services (JFS) organization to maintain a food pantry in our building. The food pantry will help support current JFS clients as well as those individuals and/or families in the local community that are in need. We are here, when you need us! Our first formal distribution event takes place on August 10 & 11th when volunteers will come together to create more than 100 “Just In Case” bags, which will be filled with non-perishables. There will be plenty of opportunities throughout the 2021-22 calendar to get involved, but you can start right now by donating the following food* items: •Peanut Butter •Jelly •Canned Fruits •Cereal •Apple Sauce •Crackers/Matzah *This list will change periodically. Please refrain from donating expired items or items in glass. I look forward to working with our congregation this year to create a more meaningful experience for all members and have a positive impact on our local community. Please don’t hesitate to email me at SocialAction@templeshaareishalom.com to learn ways to volunteer, participate, and stay engaged. 11
