IFCC PRESIDENT INVITATION Professor Howard Morris President IFCC Dear Friends and Colleagues, It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 23rd European Congress of Laboratory medicine - EuroMedlab Barcelona 2019. The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) is proud to join with European Federation of Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) and the Spanish Society of Laboratory Medicine in organising this important event for laboratory medicine. The IFCC, EFLM and our member societies are responsible for the professional leadership of laboratory medicine in this major region which is experiencing significant social and technological changes. The provision of quality healthcare is a key element for every community and nation and the practice of high quality laboratory medicine is a major contributor to the provision of optimal healthcare. This congress has a high degree of responsibility to inspire and train healthcare professionals to provide the highest level of service to support their communities. Laboratory medicine specialists and the diagnostic industry working together converting data into knowledge add value to healthcare and improve patient outcomes. Whatever our field of laboratory medicine or work environment, it is important that we regularly come together to discuss, debate and decide on the best practice for laboratory medicine to improve the quality of healthcare for our patients and our communities. This EuroMedlab Congress provides an excellent opportunity by addressing the important current topics covering the range of scientific and technological aspects of laboratory medicine with participants from all over the region and many from further afield. Our corporate members and their colleagues in the In Vitro Diagnostics industry will play a key role bringing the latest technologies and contributing to education. This congress will provide excellent opportunities for establish necessary networks for developing your potential to its fullest in this rewarding profession. I wish all delegates an enjoyable and productive congress in this historic and significant region of the world for all peoples, Yours sincerely, Professor Howard Morris, President IFCC 2
SECQ PRESIDENT INVITATION Dr. Imma Caballé President Congress and Spanish Society of Laboratory Medicine Dear Colleagues and Friends, On behalf of the Spanish Society of Laboratory Medicine (SEQCML) it is my great pleasure to invite you to the 23rd IFCC-EFLM European Congress of Laboratory Medicine, from May 19th to May 23rd 2019 in Barcelona. SEQCML has always taken great pride in organising its congresses with an active participation of around 1000 delegates and the pleasing feature of a high number of young attendees. At the present time, our Society, founded 40 years ago, has a total of 2565 members, of which 335 are trainees in Laboratory Medicine. SEQCML organises five Annual Educational Programmes with more than 2000 participants and an extensive EQAS programme distributed among 700 participating centres with a total of 5000 registrants. Our Society’s Strategic Plan proposes several strategic initiatives, among which the following stand out: promoting the value of the clinical laboratory, promoting excellence in scientific-technical activities, improving its members´ perception of Society activities, making the SEQCML visible in society in general, and promoting generational change. EuroMedLab Barcelona 2019 will offer a few days of intense activity with a stimulating scientific programme including plenary lectures, symposia, educational workshops and interactive poster sessions, which will provide participants with a platform for academic exchange on exciting new topics, along with the Europe’s largest commercial exhibition of in-vitro diagnostic products. The Congress venue, the Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB) is in Diagonal Mar, the newest section of Barcelona’s seafront in the heart of the technology and business district known as Barcelona 22@, and very well-connected to the city centre. Barcelona, one of the most vibrant cities in Europe, has the dynamic and open personality so typical of Mediterranean cities. Barcelona has its own way of life that makes it unique. It is the perfect city to relax in, stroll around, and enjoy. We are sure that both the scientific and the cultural programmes will provide you a wonderful opportunity to learn and hear from experts, to share your knowledge, to develop and strengthen relationships with peers, and to take home enjoyable and valuable memories. We sincerely hope to see you in Barcelona in May 2019 With warmest regards, Dr. Imma Caballé President Congress and Spanish Society of Laboratory Medicine 3
EFLM PRESIDENT INVITATION Professor Neumaier EFLM President Dear Colleagues and Friends, it is my great pleasure to invite you to the EUROMEDLAB 2019, the IFCC-EFLM European Conference for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine to be held in Barcelona, Spain from the 19th to 23rd of May of next year. Like in the preceding successful EUROMEDLAB congresses, Barcelona will see a central gathering of specialists from the medical diagnostic laboratory. We all look forward to welcoming thousands of participants from all parts of the world representing medicine, science and the diagnostic industry. With one year to go before the opening ceremony of the “EUROMEDLAB 2019” in Barcelona, the preparations are well under way and an exciting programme is taking shape to address many important topics of laboratory diagnostics in health care and research. These topics cover both current state-of-the-art and continuous developments of today´s modern laboratory, but also shall provide seminal insights into concepts and potentials of a presumed future evolution in the field of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine. A broad range of international speakers, key opinion leaders and stakeholders will bring these developments to life discussing important issues around health care, scientific advances, professional matters. Laboratory Medicine has always been the cross-sectional discipline setting the pace for progress in many areas of modern medicine by thoroughly implementing analytical innovation and professional practice in the medical diagnostic laboratory, and she will continue to do so in the future. Furthermore, we are now heading into the exciting and challenging times of the era of digital health and digitalized medicine that will have the greatest impact on “the what” and “the how” of diagnostic service and expertise that the medical laboratory will provide in future health care. This includes new and extended means of integration and interpretation of laboratory data into the clinical process, and this will change our medical dialogue. Laboratory Medicine also will need to reflect potential future relationships with stakeholders outside the realm of the professional dialogue like the empowered patient in the context of patient-oriented laboratory medicine. Foreseeably, the tasks for Laboratory Medicine beyond the established scope of a technical profession will become more complex in the future and will require us to set and adjust standards for our curricular education and training programs in order to sustainably attract the young generation of professionals with an interest in our multifaceted field of technical, analytical and medical expertise. I am certain that the high quality programme of EUROMEDLAB 2019 will reflect this and will provide you with ample opportunities for invigorating old contacts, making new ones and having fruitful discussions during the coming EUROMEDLAB. We hope to see you all in Barcelona Prof. Michael Neumaier EFLM President Member of the Organizing Committee 4
