OPENING DAY

Fair weather plus a cold wind did not deter a good turnout yesterday for Opening Day.
President Warren welcomed everyone and wished them well for the season.

Two new bowlers, Heather and Joe Raad, were invited to put down the first jack and first bowl of the
season. Two games of an hour each followed before everyone retired to the clubhouse.

Speeches were made by Warren Whyte and Lex Parsons then Lex, Life Member and Foundation President,
cut the jubilee cake. RH photo: Past President Joyce Budge poses with ‘The Early Birds’, Di Mitchell, Sue Brock, Maree
Turner, Joyce Budge, Julie Haslett and Del Girven.

TRUNK CLUNK
Dave, an auto mechanic, received a repair order that read: “Check for
clunking noise when going around corners.”

Taking the car out for a test drive, he made a right turn, and a
moment later heard a clunk. He then made a left turn and again
heard a clunk. Back at the shop, he opened the trunk and soon
discovered the problem.

Promptly he returned the repair order to the service manager with
this notation: “Remove bowls from trunk.”

Lots of fun at 2x4x2 last Tuesday. 20 teams of enthusiastic bowlers

WHO BOWLS FIRST?
How do you decide who starts bowling first?
Law 5.2
The skips in a team game or opponents in Singles must toss a coin.
The winner of the toss must choose whether to:
 place the mat and then deliver the jack and the first bowl; or
 tell the opposing player to place the mat and deliver the jack and the first bowl (the opposing player cannot
        refuse).

Once the game gets under way the winner of an end has to play first in the following end.

HOW TO STAND ON THE MAT
Do I have to stand with both feet on the mat before I deliver a bowl?
Is one foot OK?
What about only part of a foot?

Law 7 Position on the mat
7.1 Before delivery a player must be standing on the mat with all or part of at least one foot on the mat. At
the moment they deliver the jack or a bowl, the player must have all or part of one foot on or above the
mat.

7.2 Before delivery a player using an approved wheelchair must have one wheel on the mat and, at the
moment they deliver the jack or a bowl, the player must have all or part of one wheel on or above the mat.

7.3 Any player not meeting the terms of this law is committing a foot-fault, and law 8 will apply
    a. warn the player
    b. after a warning have the player’s bowl stopped and declared dead.

#2 BOWLS - BIAS- EMBLEMS – SIZES
Lawn bowls today are made from a hard plastic
called Melamine, they are perfectly round one
way and oval shaped the other. The bias is
produced by making the bowl lopsided, however
it is so minute that it can't be seen with the
naked eye. When the bowl is delivered along its
running surface, there is sufficient momentum
to keep it running straight along its course. As
the bowl slows down it attempts to find its true
centre of balance, forcing it to curve. The
running surface of the bowl is the part of the
bowl which is in contact with the green when in
motion.

Every bowl has an emblem engraved on each
side. One side has a small emblem with the
bowl's size, weight, serial number & the manufacturer's stamp around it. The other side has the same
emblem, but larger. The small emblem side is the bias side. This means it is the side that it will turn
towards when in motion.

Lawn bowl sizes range from size 00 through to size 7. Only 1 to 2 millimetres in diameter separates the
sizes of bowls, the differences are small but considerable when gripping various sized bowls.

The bowl in this photo is Size 3, the World Bowl stamp says it is legal until 2021

The bowls some people use have the letters XH next to the number. XH means “extra heavy”

Sizes are: 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Bowls range in size from size 00 (smallest) to size 7, and there will be a size that is correct for your hand. It
is very important that a bowls fits snugly within the palm of your hand using your preferred grip. They can
be either medium or heavy in weight, they can be regular or slim in their diameter. All of these variables
combine to make your choice of bowl crucial to your future success.

APPRECIATION TIME
A man spoke to each of his three sons when he sent them off to college...
"I feel it's my duty to provide you with the best possible education. You do not owe me anything for that.
However, I want you to appreciate it. As a token of your gratitude, please each put $1,000 into my coffin
when I die."

And so it happened. His sons became a doctor, a lawyer and a financial planner: each very financially
successful.

When their father's time had come and they saw their father in the coffin, they remembered his wish and
their duty and honour.

First, the doctor put 10 newly printed crisp $100 bills onto the chest of the deceased father.

Then, the financial planner also put $1,000 there in
20 newly printed crisp $50 bills.

Finally, it was the heartbroken lawyer's turn. He
reached into his pocket, took out his cheque book,
wrote a cheque for $3,000, put it into his father's
coffin and took the $2,000 cash.

The lawyer is now running for Parliament.
