Fareham June 2021 V olunteering Matters provides a monthly round up of volunteering opportunities in the local area, provided by Volunteer Centre One Community. We specialise in finding you the right kind of volunteering experience and as COVID restrictions lift many more volunteering opportunities are becoming available. We find many people volunteering roles they enjoy, roles they can get excited about each morning and roles in some cases that have led to paid work or a change in career. If you have recently found yourself out of work or with more time on your hands, we can offer different opportunities for you to choose from, all of which will make you feel involved, valued and of benefit to your chosen organisation. Volunteers’ Week 2021 This month we celebrate Volunteers’ Week, 1-7 June. Volunteers’ Week is about celebrating the huge range of people who give their time in so many ways. From trustees and campaigners to carers and fundraisers, gardeners and event supporters, guides and scouts leaders, befrienders and walk leaders. Many people volunteer in a huge variety of ways, this is a great time to think about the fantastic contribution that volunteers make to all our lives across the borough of Fareham. Hampshire County Council Become a COVID-19 Champion. Would you like to help keep your community safe? Volunteers are required from all backgrounds and communities in Hampshire who have been most affected by COVID-19, to share up to date information about the COVID-19 vaccine. This is a home based role and to help you there will be a welcome session with the public health team, weekly updates on the vaccine for you to share. You will be supported throughout. Titchfield Lunch Club This lunch club charity has been going for some 50 years this June and they supply lunch to 24 older people every Wednesday at the Titchfield Community Centre. The customers are usually in their late 70s-90s+. The times are usually around 11:00 to 13:30 and transport is provided for them if required. They are planning a tea for their customers some time in August or September, depending on COVID-19 restrictions, to celebrate their 50th anniversary. They are in the process of looking for additional volunteers, mainly to drive the mini-bus hired from Communicare but also to help with the organising and cooking at the Titchfield Community Centre. Cancer Research UK Event Assistant Scheme The Event Assistant Scheme is a fantastic opportunity for you to play an integral role in the successful delivery of some of the country’s leading events, that generate substantial and sustained income for Cancer Research UK’s life- saving, world class research. Cancer Research UK’s event team is split into five divisional teams and they are looking for Event Assistants in each of these divisions. In 2021 each divisional team will have a dedicated team of Event Assistants who will support the Area Event Managers with the delivery of all their events, generally from August to November. The role includes: Management of a large number of volunteers Management of own key areas of responsibility including: course management, start and finish and stage management Some operational responsibilities including setting up and dismantling equipment Ensuring all Cancer Research UK health and safety guidelines are met Possibly looking after any lost children or vulnerable adults Supporting Cancer Research UK participants at cheer points or post event activation at regional 3rd party Sports events throughout the year You will need: The motivation, tenacity and ability to support the delivery of logistically complex and large scale events Proactivity in achieving results, to be capable of solving problems and responding positively to new opportunities and challenges Willingness to work unsociable hours and long shifts This is predominantly weekend work so it can fit around studies and some jobs, the events can require working in all weathers and you may be required to travel and stay away from home as required. You must be eligible to work in the UK and CRUK may carry out an Enhanced DBS with barred list check as part of your induction. If you have a passion for events and event management, a confident and practical attitude, with the ability to work on own initiative, confidence in making logical decisions on event day to improve the supporter and volunteer experience, then this is for you. There will also be opportunities to work at Shine events as well as with many 3rd party Sports events, such as London Marathon, Manchester Marathon, Royal Parks and many others. British Heart Foundation Shop Volunteers The BHF funds research to keep hearts beating and blood flowing. But they need your help to make a difference. Volunteers are required to help with Front of House duties, which include welcoming customers into the shop whilst observing COVID-19 protocols, shop floor stock processing and serving customers using a till. Full training and support will be given. Volunteer Secretary for Catisfield Memorial Hall The trustees of Catisfield Memorial Hall are looking for a volunteer secretary. This is the only community building in the village and it is used regularly, seven days a week, by a wide variety of groups, including mums and babies, keep fit groups, dance groups and hobby groups such as gardeners, flower arrangers and artists. It is also a popular venue for private parties for children and adults alike. Although the Trustees employ a Booking Secretary to deal with users of the Hall, the role of Secretary to the Management Committee is just as important, not only to service the committee but to be the custodian of archived material and to ensure that the Trustees comply with legal requirements, for example with the Charity Commission, and also to keep a copy of all paperwork masters. There is a lot of history surrounding Catisfield as a village, and the village hall goes back a long way too. The role covers a number of areas of responsibility, but hopefully is not too onerous, and the people that the volunteer would be
working with are of various ages and backgrounds, are very supportive and interesting and easy to work with. Abshot Community Association Abshot Community Association is looking for someone who is able to oversee bookings. Could you answer queries, take details, deposits and provide support for the committee and event holders when required? This is an ideal opportunity for someone keen to volunteer using their own PC in their own time, very flexible but supported by and beneficial to the community. The Abshot Community Centre was opened in 1980 for use by the local community. The Centre is run and managed by a voluntary Abshot Community Association (ACA) committee and is registered as a charitable organisation. They offer numerous community activities such as regular user groups, themed fun days for the family, tribute acts, pantomimes, treasure hunts, regular quiz nights and other events on a regular or one off basis. Portchester Lunch Club - Cooks and Assistants Needed Portchester Lunch Club has been running for over 65 years and is re- opening to welcome people on Thursday 22 July 2021. The lunch club runs to enable people to come together to enjoy good company and food. There is a weekly raffle which helps fund lunch outings, afternoon teas and a celebration lunch in January. Portchester Lunch Club would like volunteers to assist with and cook a two course meal and serve teas and coffees once a week. Volunteers are required from 8.30am-2pm on a Thursday. There will be six cooking teams and there will be a maximum of four people in the kitchen at one time. When volunteering, you will have the help and support you need so that your skills can make a difference. As a new volunteer you will receive a full induction which will ensure that you know exactly what to expect during your shift. Over 18s only. Back To The Future Loneliness and social isolation is a huge problem among older people and others who find it difficult to get out and about. One Community runs a visiting and re-engagement scheme across the boroughs of Fareham and Eastleigh to address that need. The scheme provides companionship and encourages individuals to get involved with their communities again - by accessing community transport, joining clubs and taking up other available activities. Training is given and full support and supervision is provided, with mileage expenses paid at 45p per mile. Various Charities in Fareham Now charity shops have opened again, they have various volunteering roles available, including sorting vintage clothing, warehouse staffing, front of house meeting and greeting and general customer service. There are charities in Fareham that sell furniture and books who will need help with the selling and warehousing of these. Westbury Manor Museum that houses the wonderful history of Fareham will also need help with welcoming customers, ensuring they enjoy their visit, and serving them in the café. CPRE Litter Picking CPRE Hampshire, the countryside protection charity, has launched a new scheme to help tackle litter across the county. It has partnered with green service provider Idverde to run weekly litter picks on roadside verges. At recent litter picks Idverde provided a truck and driver to follow the litter pickers and screen them from approaching traffic, and loaned equipment needed for the clean up. More volunteers are needed to help with weekly litter picks on Saturday mornings at 10.30am.

Information Centre 55 Osborn Mall 1st Warsash Sea Scout Group Fareham Shopping Centre This Royal Navy accredited Scout Group is based in Warsash and has over 150 Beavers, Email Cubs & Scouts. A team of 40 adult volunteer volunteer@1community.org.uk leaders runs a wide variety of activities following the balanced programme of the Scout Association.
