Frances Wilson – Planhaven Newfoundlands The next pages of this newsletter are dedicated to Frances Wilson, life member of the Newfoundland Club and one of the most successful breeders of Newfoundlands. Friends have shared pictures and stories in her memory. Vale Frances Wilson 1/3/1941 – 30/12/2020 By Denis Burke On the 30/12/20 The Newfoundland Club of NSW Inc., and the Newfoundland community of Australia in general, lost an icon of the breed with the passing of Frances Wilson, a Life Member of The Newfoundland Club of NSW Inc., following a long illness. Lindy and I first met Frances in the early 1970s when she was operating her kennel at Dural on the outskirts of Sydney. We didn’t become good friends until 2000 when we purchased our first Newfoundland from Frances, Planhaven Son O Mel, who we called Teddy much to the disapproval of Frances who had a line of her own Teddys, but Teddy it remained. Frances became Australia’s most prolific and successful Newfoundland breeder in the early 1970s following a number of successful matings she carried out with a number of well credentialed dogs imported by other previously established Australian breeders. These and other subsequent matings by Frances produced many outstanding dogs who went on to win numerous Best of Breed awards at Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane Royal Shows, and Best in Show awards at All Breed Shows as well as Newfoundland Specialties, producing many Champions, a number of Grand Champions and a Supreme Champion, and many wonderful progeny. Some of Frances’ outstanding dogs from the early years were Ch Planhaven Presto Teddy, a landseer, who dominated the Newfoundland Show scene in the mid to late 1970s winning many major awards at Royal Shows and Specialties. He became one of the top Newfoundland sires in Australia, siring many Champions. Another of her early Champions was a dog imported from the UK called Guiness. Guiness became the most successful sire of Newfoundlands in that era. He sired 10 Best in Show winning progeny including Ch Planhaven Hard Astern who had over 20 Best in Show awards to his credit and a Best in Group at Brisbane and Melbourne Royal Shows. 8
NEWF NEWS | Issue 1/2021 Another son of Guiness, Ch Planhaven Big Mac, at the age of 6 ½ won Best in Show at Melbourne Royal Show. A son of Big Mac, Ch Planhaven Thunder Bay, won 7 NSW Newfoundland Specialties and 11 Best in Show awards at All Breed Shows. He was the sire of the famous Ch Planhaven Thunder Dome. Thunder Dome won 13 Specialty or Semi Specialty Best in Show awards and 42 All Breed Best in Show awards which at the time was a world record for the breed. A son of Thunder Dome, was the well known Ch Planhaven Brand Nu Teddy who was Challenge Dog at Sydney Royal Show at 9 years of age. Another prominent sire was an imported dog from Europe, Ch Ursula’s Indian Son Of Dipper who produced many winning Newfoundlands including Grand Ch Planhaven Black Sultan, a Specialty winner, a Best of Breed winner at Sydney and Melbourne Royal Shows and multiple Best in Show winner at All Breeds level. Sultan was owned by Donna and Dave Bailey. The aforementioned stud dogs had a major influence on the breed in Australia in that time and most successful Show Newfoundlands in the late 1970s to early 1990s had at least 1 or 2 of these dogs in their pedigrees. In the early years of Planhaven Frances operated her kennel very successfully in Dural on the outskirts of Sydney. Around 1981 she relocated her operation to her beloved Planhaven property at Berrima in the Southern Highlands, with its cold climate very conducive to breeding and raising Newfoundlands. In the late 1970s Frances began a collaboration with Allan and Denise Robins from Waterbear Newfoundlands in South Australia. This collaboration produced a number of Champion Newfoundlands including the stunning Ch Waterbear Dan Ruff who was actually a grandson of Ch Planhaven Hard Astern and Ch Planhaven Galaxy. Dan Ruff went on to win over 70 Groups including Sydney and Melbourne Royals and 25 All Breeds Best in Show and 7 Newfoundland Specialty Best in Show awards. Around 2000 the Robins relocated to Georgia in the US for work commitments and also relocated their Waterbear operations where they continued to breed successfully using their existing Planhaven lines. They have exported a few Newfoundlands to Australia including the very successful Ch Waterbear Winner Takes It All To Planhaven and his litter sister, Thriller, who are from Frances’s lovely bitch Ch Planhaven Catch Me If U Can, who had been imported to the US by the Robins in 2007. Winner has had a successful Show career in Australia winning Best in Show at the Newfoundland Club of NSW Specialty in 2012 and Best of Breed at Sydney Royal Show in 2012, along with many other awards. He has produced many progeny including the first Planhaven Supreme Champion, Sup Ch Planhaven How High The Moon, campaigned by Julie Pajaczkowski, who was awarded Best of Breed at Sydney Royal Show in 2017 with his litter sister, Ch Planhaven Magic In The Moonlite awarded Runner Up Best of Breed. Winner also sired Ch Planhaven Dream Maker who was awarded Runner Up Best in Show to Winner at the Newfoundland Club of NSW 2012 Specialty. Waterbear Newfoundlands have also exported a small number of dogs to South Australia and Victoria. Sup Ch Planhaven How High The Moon has also produced some quality progeny, in particular the very successful Landseer Dog Ch Newfcastle War Party. 9
In 2010 Planhaven suffered a serious setback when a tragic fire destroyed the main kennel building, a large timber structure that had previously been horse stables. Sadly, 1 Newfoundland and 1 of Frances’s Shih Tzus perished in the fire. The Newfoundland sadly was one of ours, our lovely girl Millie who was boarding at Planhaven with her brothers Nelson and Ringo, who survived unscathed along with 13 other dogs. The fire was devastating for Planhaven but Frances soldiered on, albeit, with greatly reduced accommodation and facilities. In 2013 Frances made the major decision to relocate her Planhaven operation from her long time location at Berrima to the Gold Coast hinterland in Queensland to escape the severe winters of Berrima which were beginning to impact her health. It was a major logistical exercise. Frances continued breeding on the Gold Coast and had a number of litters. Unfortunately the move to the Gold Coast wasn’t as successful as Frances had hoped for and in 2015 she made the difficult decision to move her operation back to Berrima. In the years following her return to Berrima Frances’s health continued to deteriorate and she scaled back her operations at Planhaven somewhat, but, ably assisted and cared for by Robyn Parkin and her husband Ross, and at various times by Julie Pajaczkowski and other friends, the breeding and showing operation continued and continues to this day. Many humorous stories exist in relation to Frances’s exploits in attending dog shows and other activities associated with her Planhaven operations, too many to list here. One such story that Lindy and I had the pleasure of being part of was her victory in a novelty event, the “Over The Hill Handlers” competition at the Newfoundland Club of America National Specialty in 2008 at Warwick, Rhode Island, which we attended with a small group of Australian/New Zealand Newfoundland friends. The competition was held in conjunction with the prestigious Top 20 competition, a formal annual event at the National conducted as a night time indoor event where the Top 20 winning Newfoundlands in the US for the preceding 12 months are judged by a panel of judges to select the top winning Show Dog in the US. The novelty event saw older exhibitors showing their dogs using various mobility aids, such as walking sticks, crutches, walkers and wheel chairs etc. Unbeknown to Frances she was secretly entered in the competition and was only told of the entry a couple of hours prior to the judging. Frances entered into the spirit of the event and was excited to be able to show her beloved Catch Me, who, as mentioned previously, had been imported from Planhaven to the US by Allan and Denise Robins and who was entered at the Specialty. Frances staggered into the judging area with an IV drip trolley on one arm and Catch Me on the other while wearing a dog bib. After an exhausting judging exercise Frances was declared the winner much to the excitement of her Australian/New Zealand support group. A photo of this event accompanies this tribute. 10
NEWF NEWS | Issue 1/2021 Frances will be remembered, as stated earlier, as an icon of the Newfoundland breed in Australia who was virtually a walking encyclopedia of Newfoundland history, pedigrees, Show results and knowledge of the breed in Australia and worldwide. As evidenced by the preceding records and information she had a major impact on the development of the Newfoundland breed in Australia and beyond. She was willing to share that knowledge and information freely with other Newfoundland owners, both Show and Pet owners, breeders and fanciers. She will be sadly missed by members of the Newfoundland Club of NSW and the Newfoundland community in Australia and worldwide. The Newfoundland Club of NSW offers our sincere condolences to Frances’s brother, Martin, and her family. R I P Frances 11
Frances Wilson “Planhaven Kennels” By Jeanette Mitchell Founding Member of the Newfoundland Club of NSW Life Member of the Newfoundland Club of NSW Newfoundland Breed Judge Where do you start to tell the story of Frances and The Newfoundland Club of NSW. Best to start at the beginning before there was a Newfoundland Club. In the early 1970’s a group of people including Frances gathered together at Narrabeen Lakes and Manly Dam to have fun with their dogs. This group then formed into the Newfoundland Social Club. With the success of these outings, it was decided to form the Newfoundland Club of NSW. The first election was held in February 1976 at which Frances was elected to the Committee and was also a member of the Action Committee. At the first Annual General Meeting of the Club, Frances became the Publicity Officer. In later years, Frances also served the Club as Vice-President and President. Frances was granted Life Membership in 1993. Frances was always an active member of the Club, a breeder and a member of the breed show scene. As a dedicated and well-respected breeder Frances contributed significantly to the advancement of the Newfoundland Breed in Australia. Frances was a dedicated member of the breed show scene travelling around NSW and Interstate with her dogs, keeping in touch with other breeders and interacting socially. We will miss her unique personality and her antics around the show scene. Among the early dogs that established Planhaven Kennels: Planhaven Tanqueray - Best in Show at the first Newfoundland Breed Show in 1976 Planhaven Patchouli Ch. Planhaven Hard Astern Ch. Planhaven Presto Teddy Ch. Planhaven Teddy Junior Ch. Planhaven Teddy Bear Ch. & NZ Ch. Planhaven Big Mac Edenglens Born Free (Imp USA) Spokinewfs Sailon to Planhaven (Imp Canada) And who could forget Ch. Planhaven Thunder Bay and his son Ch. Planhaven Thunder Dome. 12
NEWF NEWS | Issue 1/2021 Since then, Frances has had many outstanding dogs keeping up the tradition of Planhaven Kennels. Over the years, Frances had many breeds in her kennels. When I first met Frances, she had Irish Wolfhounds, Chow Chows, Shih Tzus but her first love was always the Newfoundlands. Over the years she had a series of house Newfoundlands – the main ones were always Landseers. Memories Frances was always ready to help out and party at club functions. Who could forget Frances and her Newfoundland participating in the Limbo at the Fun Days with her own unique style. Frances would get under the bar in an almost traditional manner and then she proceed to put the dog on its side and drag the dog through - which usually won the event. There was also her participation in every Breed Show Pageant dressed in her Milk Maid costume, complete with Dog, Cart and Milk Cans. As I look back over the years, it’s hard to select what story to tell. One of my early memories of Frances was her arrival at my place with 4 Shih Tzu puppies, saying “I’m on my way to Brisbane for the Show, see if you can sell them for me. There is an ad in the paper for them, I’ll see you on my way back.” She had phoned me the week before to ask if I could look after some puppies for her while she was away. It turned out that these puppies were still for sale. After getting the puppies settled and a cup of Coffee she was on her way. When she arrived back there was 1 puppy left and no! I did not want I to keep it! After another cup of coffee off she went with the puppy. Then there was the afternoon that we invaded the Ettamogah Pub with our Newfoundlands, on the way back from a show. We arrived and were ushered through to the beer garden where we created havoc with all the locals coming to meet the dogs. Then Frances added to the entertainment with Teddy at the table with chips and a beer. There are many more stories we could all tell as Frances contributed to our lives in many ways. We will all miss her. 13
A Tribute to Frances Wilson By Tony and Pat Sherlock – Life Members For some time Frances had been confined to her home because of her debilitating illness. But when I think about Frances, I look past this time and I picture a confident woman striding around the ring with her magnificent Newfoundlands. Pat and I bought our Newfoundland “PANDA” from Frances in 1982. He was a lovely, good natured dog, so easy to love. Over the years there followed a succession of marvellous Newfoundlands from Frances. They all had the beautiful temperament that Frances bred in her dogs. This breeding ensured that our dogs were always very friendly to people and dogs alike. The great achievements of Frances included Best in Show for her “Big Mac” at the Melbourne Royale. Her “Thunder Dome” was Australia’s most successfully exhibited Newfoundland. 14
NEWF NEWS | Issue 1/2021 Impressive as Frances was as a breeder and exhibitor, there is even more to Frances. She was the “oracle” on Newfoundlands. She knew more about their history, lineage, character traits, than anyone else. Her wealth of knowledge on Newfoundlands was unmatched. Sadly we will have to say that Frances will not be replaced in the Newfoundland world. She stood out clearly as one who illuminated this noble breed. Thank you Frances for what you have done for us personally and for Newfoundlands as a breed. Your wonderful legacy will be maintained in the progeny of your beautiful dogs. 15

Memorial Service Family and Friends gathered on the 6th of March to celebrate Frances’ life at the memorial service at Planhaven Kennels at Berrima. Frances is resting in peace under a newly planted tree on the top of the hill at Planhaven together with the ashes of her dogs. A bottle of Drambury and a chair is waiting for her to come back and enjoy a glass of her favourite drink. 18
