FOREWORD It’s exciting to be heading to South Africa with such a diverse group of Kiwi exporters. The companies who are part of this trip cover all aspects of our economy. Representing ever diversifying New Zealand businesses, this delegation includes companies specialising in construction, software, technology innovation, energy, meat production, dairy, and produce. It is great to see the range of products and services joining us on this mission. Our relationship with South Africa is our deepest and most diverse on the African continent. With a deep cultural connection through sporting links, and a shared love of good food and beverages, this trip is an opportunity to deepen that relationship and develop meaningful in-market connections. When New Zealand businesses think about exporting their goods or services to the African continent, then South Africa is almost always top of mind. South Africa acts as a stepping stone; an ideal base from which to expand into other African nations. This is our first business delegation to South Africa. The South African market presents significant potential; over the last two years, we have seen a 16% increase in exports to South Africa and an 8.8% increase in two way trade. The Government I am part of believes in supporting our exporters to showcase their products and services to the world. We also believe in encouraging investment to support economic growth. Visits like this one are an important part of promoting the FLETCHER TABUTEAU New Zealand brand and highlighting our values to a global audience of consumers. Foreign Affairs – Parliamentary Under-Secretary Regional Economic Development – Parliamentary Under-Secretary New Zealand has a strong business story to tell the world. WEALTH FROM WASTE NEW ZEALAND AVERTANA COMPANIES avertana.com Avertana is a process technology company that has developed a proprietary platform to convert industrial waste streams into raw materials for manufacturing, with less cost and lower environmental impact than conventional routes. Avertana’s current focus is waste slag from the metallurgical industry. Its process converts this solid residue into minerals and chemicals used to make everyday products like paint, building materials, paper, and fertilizers. Avertana uses innovative chemistry, advanced materials, and novel process design to deliver new, more sustainable alternatives to existing production methods, using industrial waste rather than natural resources as the starting point. Avertana is seeking industrial partners to develop its first commercial plant, which will take waste slag from steel mills and convert it into titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment and other industrial products. Advantages of its process includes lower manufacturing costs than existing production methods and multiple product revenue streams, reducing exposure to individual commodity markets. Importantly, the process also has a much lower environmental footprint than existing production routes: –– No raw materials mining. –– No carbon in core process chemistry and a significantly smaller carbon footprint then conventional routes. –– Minimal waste, as incoming material flows end up embodied in products.
