So what about my product, my company? Are new pet products sDll needed? …In a word – DEFINITELY! Consider… • Go look at virtually any product category in a Pet SuperStore. The items have different rates of sale so 25% of them are in the bo[om 25% of sales and/or profit. They can be replaced by something be[er. • The Supplies segment has been defla_ng in price since 2009 due to the commodi_za_on of many categories. Innova_on is needed to reverse this trend. Consumers will pay more for products that are truly be[er. However, launching a new pet product is a baVle, not unlike landing on a beachhead trying to take “ground” from a firmly entrenched enemy. Right now is the _me to ask yourself all the hard ques_ons and #1 is… Why my product? …more specifically… Why will a consumer choose my product over all the others? The answer must be: • In the form of 3 bullet points (not 5 or 7 or even 1 – 3 is the number) • Specific and to the point – Conveyed in 30 seconds or less. • You can’t use Made in the USA as one of the three. (except for Food items) If you have a strong answer to Why then what is your next step? To develop a business plan with a goal, a forecast and a budget but you will also need very specific strategies and tacDcs Including: • ProducDon & Warehousing • Retail Channel Strategy • Product PosiDoning o Products • Pricing Strategy considering o Pricing/PromoDon o DistribuDon PaVerns o Timing o Retail Channels (MAP?) • Sales Coverage Strategy • PromoDonal Strategy • MarkeDng/Adv./Trade Shows o Specific to Channel • People Strategy o Displays/Fixtures • Profit Strategy FINALLY – EXECUTE THE PLAN! Without a strong commitment to execuDon, all your work could be wasted! 8 COPYRIGHT © 2017 JOHN GIBBONS
