PRESENTATION DATES • Group A 28th October 2014 • Group B 29th October 2014 • For those doing the Child Health Paper ‘The Acutely Unwell Child’, you do not have to do this presentation.
REQUIREMENT • Research and present and Case Study • Assessed by two Nurse Educators who • Demonstrating a nursing focus the have completed assessor training or incorporates holistic assessment skills, equivalent. clinical reasoning, evidenced based • Two assessors are used to ensure a fair research and reflection on practice process, and provides moderation. • Presented to your peers and to Nurse • A minimum of 60% must be achieved Educators • 10 minutes presentation and 5 minutes • Use of medical terminology, question time (15 minutes total) • Do not use slang you will be asked to stop • Do not be disrespectful or flippant • Emailed through prior to presentation date.
PRESENTATION FORMAT • Power point • If you are using • Prezi • You tube • DVD • Posters • Sound • Pamphlets • White board • Hand-outs • You need to let us know prior to • Directly speaking presentation or this may not be available • Skit • You may want to use props or provide hand outs
CONSENT • Before gathering any information • Gain consent from you intended patient, fully informing them of your intention • Offer them an ‘opt out’ option • Highlight that you will be accessing their notes, blood results etc. • Use ‘permission for use of patient information form’ • Original is sent to Yvonne Thorpe, NetP Office, 5th Floor, TPMH • Kept on file for 18months • To copy or not to copy
WHERE TO START • Decide on your patient • Decide on your topic for pathophysiology • Consent • Perform literature search • Gather patient information • HSCV • Evidence of well balanced reading • Clinical Notes • Patient interview • How many articles? • Maintaining privacy • Formulate your presentation • What if you need further information and the clinical notes are in Medical Records?
IN THE BEGINNING • Orientate your audience to what will be presented • Include • Your name • Topic • Aims/objectives • Confirmation of consent
HOLISTIC NURSING ASSESSMENT • Use a chronological approach • Medications, OTC, remedies • Presenting complaint/contributing • Past medical and surgical history factors is always a good place to start • Family history • Use an appropriate assessment tool • Relevant to presenting complaint • Review of systems appropriate to • Initial examination findings complaint. • Lifestyle factors appropriate to illness identified • Don’t forget social, psychological, physical, spiritual, cultural and developmental factors
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY • Expected to be evidenced based • Don’t use Wiki etc supported by literature • Focus on one component, keep the window narrow. • Patient focused • Use relevant literature • Utilise librarians • Utilise library resource on intranet • Use Google scholar if using Google and recognised nursing/medical sources e.g. BMJ
DIAGNOSTICS, TREATMENTS & INTERVENTIONS • Nursing focus • All relevant significant findings • Abnormal and normal • Identifying variants • What was done to confirm diagnosis • Tests performed and why • What interventions were carried out • Surgery, IVAB’s, Debriding of wound etc. • Remember your audience may have no idea of your speciality area.
NURSING CARE • Inclusive evaluation of contributing • Care Plan inclusive of patient and factors whanau • Education • Has nursing focus • What have you done for this person • Referrals while they are in your care • Medications • Be careful using unit care plans as they can be cumbersome and you may not be able to get through it all. • Speak to your plan
INCLUDE IN YOUR CARE PLAN… Treaty of Waitangi Cultural Safety • Relates to Maori patients not other • Relates to all other cultures cultures • Even if your patient may not want • Identify if your patient is not Maori Chaplin service you still need to and what you would implement to discuss other things you would meet these principles if they were implement • 3P’s • Socialisation to the ward, identifying toilets, call bells, nurse station etc. • Include the patient in what you present • Privacy • Interpreter
EVALUATION/OUTCOME • Evaluate the care plan – did they progress as expected • Do they have continual deficit and require ongoing care • Do they have an understanding of event/illness • Do they understand discharge advice and ongoing therapies • Do they know what to do once home • Do they have follow up appointments
IMPACT ON PRACTICE • You need to discuss the impact on your practice and development • What has it meant for you looking after this patient • Are there areas you would like to have done better
