Sutherland Public School December 2021 January 2022 NAUTICAL N e w s S TEV E B RIS TO L, S UP ERIN TEN D EN T COVID UPDATE As you are well aware, the COVID Delta variant has created adjustments and changes for the school district. The Sailor Staff have stepped up their efforts in numerous ways to keep everyone safe and provide learning for students in school, as well as, those that have had to be quarantined. At this point the school has been relatively COVID free with a few exceptions. “Sailor Nation,” continues to be disciplined with COVID safety procedures. As we enter the winter season, constant adjustments and changes will continue as necessary and we will continue to push for in-person learning unless we are mandated by our governor or president. Parents and patrons, Thank You, for your patience and understanding as we move through this pandemic. Distinguished Alumni Applicants Needed The Sutherland Public School Foundation is annually honoring Distinguished Sutherland Alumni. Last year's distinguished alumni award went to Dr. Paul Paulman. The Foundation is currently taking applications and your assistance with nominating past alumni for this recognition is requested. Please take time and nominate a past Sutherland graduate for this prestigious award. Information for distinguished alumni is on the school’s website. From the website click on “Foundation” then from the drop-down menu, click on “Distinguished Alumni”. An alumni nomination form tab will appear. Click on this tab and the nomination form along with instructions will be displayed. Deadline for submitting a candidate is February 1 . If you have any questions feel free to contact Lori st Barrett, or Steve Bristol @ 308-386-4656. SPS Foundation Challenge Fund Drive December is the final month for the annual Sutherland Public Schools fund drive. The past 5 years the drive has reached their targeted $10,000 goal. However, this year we are behind last year's giving. If you have never given to the Foundation this would be a great year to do so. Even if it’s $5 or $10 it all adds up and your financial donation is forever giving and will provide funding for current and future students. Your giving can be earmarked for the activity or group of your choosing. Just drop a note stating where you would like your donation dollars to go. Grants are awarded from the earnings, as the principal amount is never expended. To date the SPS Foundation has given thousands of dollars in grants to Sutherland Public Schools. Donations are tax-deductible and may be sent to Sutherland Public School (P.O. Box 217, Sutherland, NE 69165) or to Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation (P.O. Box 1321, North Platte, NE. 69103). Please consider becoming a partner investing in our youth.

Sutherland Public School December 2021 January 2022 A M A N D A H UEB N ER, H IG H S C H O O L P RIN C IP A L Sutherland Families, As we move into our winter seasons I would like to thank our coaches, sponsors, athletes, and participants in all of our extra-curricular activities. We truly have an amazing group of kids enrolled in Sutherland Public Schools and I am thankful for the support our community continues to show as we progress through the year! In the classroom, our students and dedicated teachers continue to work hard to improve student successes and growth. Each Monday, our students continue to focus on Math objectives. Soon, this focus will transition into a project-based learning approach in which students will demonstrate mastery and growth through hands-on learning. Additionally, on Tuesday’s, students have been encouraged to email parents and guardians to update them on their progress in classes. Wednesday’s have been dedicated to Study Hall, Thursday’s are for Reading, and Friday’s are reserved for early-outs for 9-12 students who have earned the privilege to leave early (passing all classes, good attendance, no discipline issues, etc.). Furthermore, nals week will be the last three days of the semester. During this time, 9-12 students will have exams that are worth ten percent of their overall grade. It will be important for students to have plenty of rest prior to the exam. Also, students should have breakfast and feel prepared by studying beforehand. I would also encourage students to talk to their teachers if they feel they need assistance. Additionally, schools across the country are seeing a major rise in Juuling/Vaping. There are many health risks associated with vaping and I would urge each parent or guardian to have conversations with their children about the dangers and risks of trying it. At school, Juuling/Vaping will be handled in the same way as if a student was in possession of tobacco. Students could be in ISS or OSS if they have a Juul/Vape on them, or they are using them during school time or at school activities. It also carries a consequence for activities. Students who are found with the devices or use them will miss the rst two contests of their activity for the rst offense, and a whole year of activities for the second offense. Finally, we will be continuing our efforts to implement PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) into the school district. We have great students and wish to better prepare them for life beyond the classroom, which is why we hold them to high expectations. Students are expected to do things “The Sailor Way” and be a good example for everyone around them. If you have any questions, please call me at the High School of ce. Sincerely, Amanda Huebner 7-12 Principal, Sutherland High School amanda.huebner@spssailors.org 401 Walnut St. Sutherland, NE 69165 (308)386-4426 "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Sutherland Public School December 2021 January 2022 J O S IE F LO Y D , ELEMENTA RY P RINC IP A L I would like to thank students, staff, and parents for doing their part to make our 1st semester a successful adventure. Our students have been working hard and are making progress with their grade level curriculum and expectations. We will be doing our Winter Benchmark of DIBELS & NWEA MAP tests in December and teachers will be sharing individual goals in reading, math and language arts with their students. Many of our students jump at the challenge to meet a goal and we know with their focus, engagement, and participation during class every day, they will hit those targets! The results from these assessments will be shared at our next P/T conferences, which are scheduled for the beginning of February. We are excited to see how our students are growing and the direction we need to take during the 2nd semester! SchoolStore.com - Check it out! Recently our students and teachers received some special gifts from our schoolstore.com fundraiser. There are no words to say how thankful our teachers were to receive their gift cards that were purchased by family, friends, and neighbors. We were overwhelmed with the generosity. At this time, our teachers have received $3,790 in gift cards that they are able to use at Caring For Classrooms to buy school supplies, materials, books, etc. Our school benefits from this program as well any time you shop online. If you are planning to do any holiday shopping please use the following link (https://tinyurl.com/vsm94m2) or find the link on the left side of our school’s homepage. You will see a list of merchants that participate and the rebate percentage that they give back to the school. Currently, our school has earned $574.11 from purchases that have been made online. PBIS Sutherland Public School is in year #6 of implementing PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports) across all PreK-12 classrooms to enhance the climate and learning environment for all students. Our brand is BE SAFE, BE RESPECTFUL, BE RESPONSIBLE & ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST. The PBIS Leadership Team meets monthly to assist in implementing the district’s plan across all grade levels. Students in K-6 who follow expectations continue to earn PRIDE COINS for their grade level. All grade levels have had opportunities to spin the WHEEL OF INCENTIVES to reveal a small reward when they have earned 25 PRIDE COINS as a grade level. We have also recognized SAILORS OF THE MONTH for August/September and October. Students who have not had any behavior referrals entered into eduCLIMBER have had their name entered into a random drawing. Each month we have had 92% of the K-6th students entered in the random drawing. Student names have been selected and announced during our morning routine. Students are also recognized with a group photo being shared on the school’s Facebook page and they also receive a small treat. Congratulations to our SAILORS OF THE MONTH! Sutherland Public School December 2021 January 2022 J O S IE F LO Y D , ELEMENTA RY P RINC IP A L…….C O NTINUED Accelerated Reader Sutherland Elementary is fortunate to have programs to assist with instilling a love of reading self- selected books while also practicing reading comprehension. Your child will be able to access Accelerated Reader over the holiday break. Students will be able to continue reading and can take quizzes at home. Points earned will not go toward a quarterly goal, but will contribute to their grand total for the year! If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher. PowerSchool - STAY INFORMED ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S GRADES In a blink of an eye, the 1 semester is quickly coming to a conclusion. Progress reports, which document st student achievement for the 2nd quarter were sent home on the 19th of November. If you have questions regarding your child’s academic or social performance, please contact your child’s teacher promptly to determine a plan together to help your child. Also, if your child is in 2 -6 grade, take nd th advantage of the opportunity to review your child’s grades anytime throughout the year on PowerSchool. Grades are updated on a weekly basis. Please contact Shelley and she can assist you with creating an account on PowerSchool. GIVING TREE Sutherland Elementary will again be doing our annual GIVING TREE. We will also be coordinating holiday food boxes for families this year. The food boxes will include all the necessities for a Christmas dinner and any additional pantry items. If you would like to assist with this activity, please contact Ruth or Mrs. Floyd @ 386-4321. The food boxes will be delivered to the families on Monday, December 13th. LOST & FOUND The lost & found box has quickly acquired many new articles of clothing. Please remember to label your child’s clothing, as it makes it easier to return them. If you are missing something, please check the lost & found box. At the end of each month, clothing that has not been claimed will be donated to the Salvation Army. ELEVATE 2020-202 Congratulations to 34 Sutherland staff members who were completers of EHA ELEVATE during the 2020-2021 school year. Each person completed an online personal health assessment, completed at least three monthly challenges and visited their physician for an annual physical. The individuals who completed the Personal Health Assessment received a $25.00 card. We had 41 staff members complete this portion of the requirements which gifted $1,025 to staff members. 34 staff members who completed all requirements each received a $150.00 gift card. Additionally, if the district reached a certain percentage of completers, the district was eligible for a grant. Our Sailors did an awesome job and reached that goal! We received a grant of $5,510.00. Continued on the next page……………………. 1
Sutherland Public School December 2021 January 2022 J O S IE F LO Y D , ELEMENTA RY P RINC IP A L…….C O NTINUED Each staff member who met the requirements received an additional $125.00 to spend on something under the umbrella of WELLNESS. Throughout the 20-21 school year, our staff members and the school received $11,635.00 all from the EHA (Educators Health Alliance). Great job Sailors! We are so proud of all of you for another great year of EHA and ELEVATE! Living in Nebraska, it is hard to say what the weather will be like, as it fluctuates from day to day. Please remember that students do need to come to school prepared for cold weather. Typically, recess will be outside unless the wind chill is below 10 degrees or it is raining, very windy, or icy. Again, please make sure your child has a warm coat, hat, and gloves so they are prepared to be outside. As we experience snowy weather, students do need to have snow boots for recess so they can play in the snow. Students who do not have snow boots will be required to stay on the cement areas that have been cleared on the playground. With the possibility of winter weather, make sure your child is prepared if we happen to dismiss early. “Practice” with your child what he/she is to do at this time. School closing information will be posted on our school app and all the local TV and radio stations. As we move into the holiday season, I am very thankful for so many things at Sutherland Elementary. We truly have a great educational system in Sutherland and have so much to be proud of. Thank you for sharing your children with us every day and allowing us to help them grow in so many ways! Happy Holidays, Mrs. Floyd The Football Team were District Champions for the third straight season! Seniors, THANK YOU for everything you have done for the program! The last date to sketch in your calendar is January 11 when we will have our mentor recognition night at the home basketball game against Hershey. We will recognize all mentors and mentees between the varsity games. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me! Enjoy your Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons! Jessica Rasby Jessica.rasby@spssailors.org Peppermint Crunch Oreo Truffles 1.Crush the entire package of Oreo cookies, including the cream filling. A food processor or blender works for this. 2.Mix together the crushed cookies and the soft cream cheese gently. Stir in the peppermint baking chips. 3.Roll the mixture into 40 even balls. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. 4.Melt the chocolate according to the package directions. 5.Use a toothpick to dip the chilled Oreo balls in the melted white chocolate. Place on parchment and let set. 6.Melt the remaining peppermint pieces with a little bit of shortening. Spoon into a plastic bag and cut one corner off. 7.Drizzle the melted peppermint chocolate over the tops of the truffles and add sprinkles quickly. Let set, then store in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator. The melted peppermint chocolate will set up quickly when you drizzle it on the tops. It is helpful to have someone else adding the sprinkles. Insidebrucrewlife.com
