Each year several USPC alumni are inducted into the Alumni Academy of Achievement, and join the current members during the two-day National Youth Congress. The alumni honorees play a vital role in the Congress because they bring the voice of experience into the discussions. They listen, encourage, laugh, and commiserate with the young people, and share personal stories of success and failure, helping the youth delegates to recognize that life is filled with the unexpected and that flexibility and a sense of humor can be as important as excellent goals and plans. Alumni Biographies Sally Ike Sally grew up in New Jersey surrounded by Thoroughbreds. When some of these horses were finished with their racing careers, Sally and her twin taught them to jump and showed them throughout the area, including at the National Horse Show in Madison Square Garden. Sally followed her passion for horses, especially training young ones. That passion led to Evening Mail, aka “Willy,” the horse of a lifetime. Sally developed Willy as a hunter, and he began his eventing career when Sally was introduced to the sport. Sally and Willy were very successful, including a 7th place finish at Burghley. They were also named to the short list for the 1968 eventing team. Sally took a full-time job in 1989 with United Stated Equestrian Team managing the jumping and eventing programs. Her job was split after the 1992 Olympic Games and she chose to administer jumping because she wanted to stay closer to eventing, her true passion. Sally participated as the jumping team leader in five Olympic Games, six World Championships and World Cup Finals. She worked on her eventing judge and technical delegate’s licenses at the same time and currently has her “S” license in each position. Sally was asked to head the United States Equestrian Federation licensed officials and education department in 2013 and held that position until her retirement in 2020. She continues to serve as an independent contractor in the compliance department. Young people have always been important to Sally. She was late in getting involved in Pony Club, but achieved her A certification and subsequently served as a national examiner, district commissioner, regional supervisor and for one term, on the board of governors. In addition to the positions noted above, Sally remains involved in many other aspects of the equestrian community, serving as chairman of the Essex Fox Hounds Hunt committee, secretary of the Show Jumping Hall of Fame board, and a member of United States Hunter Jumper Association’s jumper working group. When not involved in equestrian activities, Sally runs every day, is a history buff and a collector of sporting art.
Alumni Biographies Carol Kozlowski Carol Kozlowski is a graduate A from Genesee Valley Hunt Pony Club in Western New York. Of note, Carol never owned her own mount her entire time in Pony Club, benefitting from the generosity of owners lending her quirky and green horses and ponies who taught her nearly as much as her instructors! Her competition record spans nearly 45 years, and she has ridden at every level nationally and through CCI**** successfully. Carol was long and short listed for both the Olympic team (1984) as well as two Pan American teams (1985 and 1987). In the 1990’s she was nationally ranked at the Intermediate level and was the leading Preliminary rider (1996) and invited to participate in the United States Equestrian Team Developing Rider Program. However, she is best known for her partnership with the Connemara stallion Hideaway’s Erin Go Bragh that brought her the most notoriety notably winning the Ledyard 3-Day in 1992 and the Zone 2 Advanced Championship in 1995. He became “The Little horse That Could” with the release of a Breyer model in his image in 1998. In 1995, Carol spearheaded a campaign to have the FEI rule regarding minimum weight required in 3-Day events to be changed. With tremendous support from active upper-level riders, the FEI conceded and abolished this rule in 1997. This attracted significant equine print attention and she was named co-recipient “Horseman of the year” by the Chronicle of the Horse for these efforts. Carol served as president of the United States Evening Association from 2017-2020 after six years on the executive committee as vice president of safety. She currently sits on the United States Equestrian Federation board of governors as an eventing representative. Carol is also an “r” eventing judge and is looking to upgrade to a “R” soon. Carol has been married to Randy for 33 years and they have two Jack Russell terriers and seven horses. She is currently the owner and president of Mothersfield Inc., a 20-stall boarding and training facility in Avon, NY.
The USPC National Youth Congress was established in 1998 in order to recognize outstanding older Pony Club members that have achieved a National Certification. The National Youth Congress delegates are selected yearly by their regions and attend from all over the country. For two days during the USPC Equine Convention the delegates are brought together for a series of workshops and discussions intended to expand their awareness of themselves and how thy relate to the rapidly changing world. The Congress provides opportunities for youth delegates to bring forward regional issues and best practices, and to share ideas and experiences with other delegates, distinguished alumni, members of the National Youth Board, and members of the USPC Board of Governors. Many proposals put forward by the National Youth Congress have inspired new programs and fresh perspectives on current USPC programming.
