Marine Life Snake Island, a few minutes past Newcastle Island, is home to 250 harbour seals who bask, frolic, eat, and live on the rocky shores. Capable swimmers can snorkel with the seals as they investigate you and play in the forests of kelp. Freshwater Adventures Dive into the lakes of Nanaimo to enjoy the clean, clear, and crisp freshwater. If you’re brave enough, you can do it any day of the year. Long Lake, Brannen Lake, Cathers Lake, and more all offer excellent water for swimming and fishing. Westwood Lake is a popular swimming hole with a sandy beach, accessible change rooms, swim dock, excellent parking, and warm water. There’s an easy-hiking trail around the lake, with a sprawling off-leash dog area, and for seasoned trail runners and bikers, there are advanced tracks to explore and enjoy. The Nanaimo River is a popular spot where the locals spend sunny summer days, basking on the rocks and cooling off in the deep, clean pools. Watch for spawning salmon and wandering crayfish, living their life on the riverbed, or bring your rod and reel to test your luck against the fierce steelhead salmon. Catch a Whopper The Gulf Islands protect the waters of Nanaimo from the elements, and combined with the mild climate, excellent fishing can be found just about every day of the year. Remember to drop a trap for prawns and Dungeness Crab. Be sure to apply for a fishing license and check regulations. Dive Deep With an abundance of dive locations just off the shores of Nanaimo, including sheer walls, pinnacles, and Dodd Narrows – rated the second- best dive site in BC – you’ll be planning your next trip to Nanaimo before your gear has dried. Find large colonies of Cloud Sponges and Plumose Anemones, and spawning Rockfish, Lingcod, Spiny Pink Scallops, and the Giant Pacific Octopus. Three sunken ships – the former HMCS Saskatchewan, HMCS Cape Breton, and the Rivtow Lion, a 150-foot deep sea tugboat – provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore diver-prepared reefs and rediscover your love of the dive. Outdoor Adventures Embrace your outdoorsy soul Nanaimo’s moderate climate of warm summers and cool winters makes the outdoors accessible all year long. Stay safe in our wilderness – consult BC Adventure Smart before you go. Hike The trailhead for Mount Benson is less than an hour from downtown Nanaimo, but the 8km (5 mile) loop is an incredible experience. Reach the summit and discover 360° of scenery – Nanaimo with Newcastle and Gabriola islands to the east, Nanoose Bay in the north, Ladysmith in the south, and thousands of acres of forest to the west. There are multiple trails to choose from, making the hike possible for most skill levels. Leashed dogs are welcome, and the Whiskey Jacks are always willing to share your snack. Ammonite Falls is a local favourite for rock hounds, photographers, and everyone that likes an easy hike with a spectacular finish. The area is named for the ammonite fossils embedded in the rocks around the riverbed. The parking lot is on the edge of town, and the hike can be easily done in a few hours, depending on how long you stop to admire the surroundings. Make time to stop at Petroglyph Provincial Park, on the southside of Nanaimo, to find prehistoric rock carvings made by the region’s First Peoples over 1,000 years ago. Bring some paper or cloth and crayons, charcoal, or wax to Fine China. (Doumont Trail network) make rubbings on the concrete replicas of the ancient figures. Loudon Park and Trail is a quiet haven in the middle of Nanaimo. Take your time on this easy trail, enjoying the view and basking in the tranquility. On a hot day, the beach is a great place to hang out, cooling off in the crisp waters of Long Lake. Walk among the giant firs and massive cedar trees on the Lost Lake trail, a quick and easy loop around Lost Lake. NanaiMo Getting Here Nanaimo is the hub of Vancouver Island, a beautiful location on the ks west coast of Canada with nearly 360° of access. BC Ferries provides two options to get directly to Nanaimo from the mainland. This provincial service offers a fantastic selection of ay amenities – delicious treats, a well-stocked gift shop, and designated eB ho pet areas on some ships – and connects Departure Bay, in the heart of rses Snake Island Ho Nanaimo, with the Horseshoe Bay Ferry terminal, a 30-minute drive to from downtown Vancouver. There are multiple crossings every day, with a typical sailing time of 1 hour and 40 minutes. Watch for eagles, dolphins, and killer whales as you make the crossing. Duke Point Terminal is found just south of Nanaimo, with frequent daily sailings, including a late-evening departure, to Tsawwassen on the lower mainland. The sailing is generally two hours long, and the scenic trip is equipped with ample amenities and courteous staff. wassen The Nanaimo Airport (YCD) is one of the easiest ways to enjoy your to Tsaw stay in Nanaimo. Regular flights from Air Canada, WestJet, and Island Express connect Nanaimo with much of the west coast, as well as Calgary.
