A letter from our Executive Director.... Now that I have celebrated my one-year anniversary as the Executive Director of GHCCM, it is with excitement that we are moving forward with the Next Steps in our Ministry, the development of the Whole Life Center. For 50 years, GHCCM has continued to grow the services offered to our neighbors. These successes and accomplishments could not be possible without the dedicated staff and numerous volunteers who are here daily to help and offer hope and healing to our neighbors. Thank you to all who have given your time to enhance GHCCM. As many of you may know, GHCCM has closely examined our approach to charity and feel that there may be a better way to offer a guiding hand to our neighbors. By journeying TOGETHER, we can help our neighbors to gain independence through thriving rather than surviving. To assist in making this next step, GHCCM will soon be opening the WHOLE LIFE CENTER, located across from our main campus. We are excited about the future of the Center and how it can benefit our community. There is a short article in the newsletter. In the coming months, we will be unveiling details of the Whole Life Center and the scope of services that will be offered. Stay tuned! We invite all of you to become a part of GHCCM. There are endless ways to help! Blessings to all, Kathy Wood, Executive Director, GHCCM GHCCM Hosts Workshop Exploring the Approach to Charity On March 28-29, the Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministry (GHCCM) hosted a 2-day community workshop that explored the complex issues of charity and how charity is delivered. When closely examining poverty and charity, attendees gained an understanding that there is an alternative approach which involves collaboration with our neighbors to work together to move from merely surviving to thriving. This partnership toward taking the next step offers the goal of independence and dignity to our neighbors. The workshop’s guest speaker was Dr. Shawn Duncan, Director of the Lupton Center, in conjunction with the NETworX Ministry through GHCCM. Over 100 area residents were in attendance, including many churches as well as individuals. Dr. Duncan is trained to equip organizations and individuals with creating real and lasting change in their community. He leads the team in working together to transform the approach to responding to material poverty. Gaining an understanding of poverty and addressing the underlying causes are essential components in assisting communities to flourish. As stated by Dr. Duncan, “A new way is possible. Working together to figure it out so all buy into the plan is key to success.” The keys to developing a successful plan according to the Lupton Center are “awareness, assessment, coalition, buy-in, research, experiment, and finally implementation.” (pictured left to right are Michael Blackburn, GHCCM Board President; Dr. Shawn Duncan, guest speaker; Dr. Kathy Wood, GHCCM Executive Director; Liz Goebelbecker, GHCCM NETworX Coordinator) - please see more information on the Leaders Lab on the next page CRITICAL NEEDS – CAN YOU HELP?
