News & Highlights in Munich 2018 Subject to changes The Free State of Bavaria celebrates a centennial. 2018 will see Bavaria celebrating two anniversaries: 100 years ago Bavaria was declared a free state and has been a constitutional state for 200 years now. “WIR FEIERN BAYERN” (We Celebrate Bavaria) is the motto for festivities all over Bavaria, organized for citizens by citizens. Associations, societies und municipalities are arranging concerts, celebrations, open house events and much more. www.wir-feiern.bayern/veranstaltungen/ 1818: Bavaria became a modern constitutional state. Bavarian kings rejected being crowned, but swore by the constitution of 1818, guaranteeing equality before the law, religious freedom, extended freedom of speech and access to public offices for every man according to ability. The constitution remained in place until the end of the First World War. The November Revolution of 1918 and proclamation of the Free State of Bavaria: “Nacha mach ma halt a Revolution, damit a Ruah is!” (Well then, let’s have a revolution and be done with it). The November Revolution in Bavaria was not quite as harmonious as author Oskar Maria Graf described it. Following a peace rally on November 7, 1918, socialist Kurt Eisner proclaimed the Free State of Bavaria, and the House of Wittelsbach’s monarchy was overthrown. Technical University of Munich’s 150th anniversary King Ludwig II. founded the “Königlich-bayerische Polytechnische Schule” (Royal Bavarian Poly-Technical University) in 1868, to promote industry and progress in rural Bavaria. From this precursor that operated under the name “Königlich Bayerische Technische Hochschule München” from 1877 onward, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) evolved over a course of 150 years.
