Milikapiti Business Directory 1 About Milikapiti Milikapiti is located north of Darwin on Melville Island, on the edge of the large estuary of the Tjipripu River and part of the Tiwi Aboriginal Land Trust. Milikapiti was established in 1941 as a permanent Aboriginal settlement by the Native Affairs Branch of the Northern Territory Administration. 1.1 Population In the 2016 Census, there were 401 people in Milikapiti (State Suburbs) Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 93.3% of the population. The median age of people in Milikapiti (State Suburbs) was 28 years. 1.2 Power and water Electricity is supplied by diesel generators. Chlorinated water is supplied to the town via 5 bores which are situated approximately 1km from the town boundary. Three sewage ponds where wastewater is treated are also located on the town boundary. 1.3 ICT information • Internet access • 3G mobile coverage • Satellite commercial television and radio available 1.4 Access 1.4.1 Air There are daily flights from Darwin to Milikapiti with Fly Tiwi. 1.4.2 Road Milikapiti is not accessible by road. 1.5 Local government Milikapiti Local Authority consists of 18 members and is the main forum for community management and local service provision issues. The Tiwi Island Regional Council oversees the local authority. 1.6 Land tenure Milikapiti is located within the Tiwi Aboriginal Land Trust and is Aboriginal Land under the NT Land Rights Act (NT) 1976. Jilamara is a highly respected art centre providing facilities for its members to produce fine arts and crafts. A number of high profile artists such as Pedro Wonaeamirri, Timothy Cook, Raelene Kerinaiua, Janice Murray and Patrick Freddy Puruntatameri have emerged through the art centre as major figures in Australian art. Jilamara artists produce innovative and contemporary works based on traditional body painting designs, using natural ochres collected on the island. Jilamara has firmly established itself as a source of fine arts, with new modern facilities including a gallery to showcase the work of Jilamara artists and 'Muluwurri Museum', to ensure the significant collection of Tiwi art and artefacts are housed appropriately for the people of Milikapiti.
