Edition 16: 26th March 2021 Message from the Headteacher – Mrs John Well done to our students for getting through the last three weeks and a turbulent spring term too. It does feel like an unusual end to the term but I do feel that there is some sense of normality slowly creeping back in. We take great pride here at Stanborough for creating so many extra-curricular activities. The school truly does provide a wide range of opportunities to nurture, develop and stretch pupils’ talents and interests. Pupils appreciate these and make good use of them. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions and lockdown, we have not had the usual range of extra-curricular opportunities on offer but it has been great to see our students embrace those that have been available. It was a really fabulous end to the term where all the students could watch the house drama event (even though virtually) and enjoy this annual house event. Well done to our Sixth Form house captains for masterminding this project virtually. The films were all shot independently and were created, scripted and directed by the House Captains. Well done to all students who got involved in this! The performances were stunning. Finally, it was a pleasure to spend break time with the top students in Year 10, 11 and Sixth Form who had secured the highest Attitude to Learning Score in the autumn term progress update report. Well done to our students for their dedication and the commitment to their studies. The top students in each year who achieved the highest Attitude to Learning (ATL) score last term were invited to ‘Break time with the Headteacher’ to celebrate such a great achievement. These students have exhibited an exceptionally driven and engaged approach towards their work, utilising independent learning strategies to ensure that outcomes often exceed what is expected of them. They have also demonstrated an exceptionally positive approach towards their learning, making a significant contribution to the establishment of a highly productive classroom ethos. Cycling Safety We are proud at Stanborough to have a large number of students who cycle to and from school. Can we please ask parents however to reinforce with their child the importance of doing so safely and responsibly. We have had a number of incidents of students riding dangerously on their bike, especially at the end of school. On a number of occasions this has led to a near accident or even a small accident or damage to the bike or car. We obviously do not want any serious injuries or accidents to our students, or to members of the general public, so we would very much appreciate it if parents can remind their child about the importance of safe cycling. We also thoroughly recommend that students wear a helmet if they are cycling to school. Thank you very much for your support with this issue. Home Testing over Easter Mr Braybrook, Deputy Headteacher, writes: We hope that students are now able to carry out their home tests. Just a brief reminder that these tests should continue over Easter although the length between each test can be longer and the days they are taken can vary. It is important however that all students complete a test on the Sunday night/Monday morning before they return to school on April 12th. Students will be given more tests when they return to school after Easter. Helping to end Period Poverty Mrs Adams, Life Skills Leader, writes: No young lady should ever be held back from accessing education due to the cost of sanitary products. In Britain 52% of girls said they miss school due to their period, nearly one in 10 said it was a direct result of being unable to afford or access sanitary products while 14 per cent claimed they did not feel able to talk to staff at their school, causing them to stay home. As a result of these statistics and with the support from Personal Hygiene Services (PHS) we are offering all girls free sanitary products in school. Just contact Miss Wilding or Mrs Adams. English Set Texts - Year 10 All students in Year 10 have received Jekyll and Hyde in their literature classes. If students wish to keep this copy from the school, they must pay for it using Wisepay. Please note that other set texts, including Romeo and Juliet and An Inspector Calls, will also require payment if taken from the school. Students have already received Romeo and Juliet and An Inspector Calls will be delivered to students when it is taught in September 2021. Please see Class Charts announcements for a copy of the set texts letter. Should you have any questions, or require financial assistance, please do not hesitate to email Miss McLean kmclean@stanborough.herts.sch.uk
Catering Service with effect from 12th April 2021 Thank you for your understanding and cooperation whilst we have not had a catering service so far this academic year. As previously advised, the canteen will again be open after the Easter holidays. There will be a more limited service than in previous years, as we need to keep all year bubbles separate and therefore this will operate as a grab and go service. This means that each year group will have an allocated time to collect their food and then take this to their own zone to eat it. The biometric device used to make payment will be sanitised between each student and cleaning of the area will take place between each bubble entering the dining hall. As we are unable to offer the same full service as previously, HCL have given an indication of the types of food that will be on offer and the prices, which I am sure you will find very helpful. We are unable to take any cash payments and the cashloaders are not in operation. This means that all payments for your child must be made through Wisepay. Should you have any difficulties when trying to log on to WisePay please click ‘Forgotten Password’ and follow the on screen options. If after that you are still experiencing difficulties, please contact finance@stanborough.herts.sch.uk The allocated times for collection of lunches are:- Dining Hall Catering Pod 13:00 Post 16 11:00 Year 10 13:10 Year 7 13:20 Year 11 13:20 Year 8 13:30 Year 9 Please note that the times above are the only times that students can purchase food. There will not be any items for sale before school or at breaktime (except for Year 10 as their collection time is breaktime)

Will you join us in celebrating Earth Hour? Dr Sharon Jolly, Science Teacher and Year 10 Form Tutor, writes: At 8.30pm on Saturday 27th March, hundreds of millions of people across the world will switch off their lights for one hour to celebrate Earth Hour and show they care about the future of our planet. Earth Hour is organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to encourage people to reflect on the impact that their personal choices have on their planet. WWF make some great suggestions for individual, family or community activities to help you to focus on the wonders of nature or enjoy an hour without electrical lighting. If you choose to go completely device free, you could try charades by candlelight, star-gazing (weather permitting!) or an evening stroll. Could you plan a meat-free meal or prepare a feast using only local produce? We often think that our individual choices are tiny, too small to have a real impact. But collectively, they can make a real difference. Our actions can also inspire the people around us to change. Turning off the lights for an hour is really easy to do! Will you join us? Send your activities or photos to sjolly@stanborough.herts.sch.uk for a Silver Award! https://www.wwf.org.uk/earth-hour #EarthHourUK
House Captain Profiles Knebworth I am Hannah the Knebworth House Captain. I have been a part of Knebworth since Year 7 and have always taken part in house events so I am thrilled to have the honour this year with my co-captain, Charlotte. I take English Literature, History and Psychology for my A levels and I am really enjoying them. I am very pleased with my GCSE results, achieving a 9, 8 and couple of 7s. I like to spend my free time socialising with my family and friends, baking and working as a children’s rugby coach. My name is Charlotte and I am a House Captain for Knebworth this year. I am currently taking Drama, History and Politics for A-Level, and I’m enjoying them very much so far! Outside of school, I enjoy singing, acting with my drama school, baking, swimming and hanging out with my friends. I was quite proud with my GCSEs, especially achieving an 8 in History, and 7s in Drama, English Literature and English Language. As someone who’s been a part of Knebworth’s house events since Year 7, I am very excited to be leading us this year, along with my wonderful co-captain Hannah. Offley My name is Oli and I’m working alongside Ben as one of Offley’s House Captains this year. I’m in Year 12 and am studying History, English Literature and Psychology. Outside of school I like playing football, as well as watching a variety of movies and TV shows. My name is Ben and I, alongside Oli, am House Captain for Offley this year. I am currently in Year 12 and take Politics, History and English Literature for my A-Levels. In my free time I enjoy listening to music and running. Sopwell Hello all. My name is Jay and I am Sopwell's House Captain this year. I have been part of nearly all of Sopwell's house events until now (I still regret the ones I didn't join), and being House Captain has been a major aspiration since my early days. I have an immense myriad of hobbies but let's compress that down to performing and music, walks, photography, reading, and computers. To that end I have taken Music, Drama and Theatre, Dance BTEC and Computing for my A-levels. I suppose it would be fair to say that COVID-19 has assuredly changed my view of the world. Most notably, I've looked to placing my goals in the present rather than in the future (a work in progress, which has worked well so far). I believe heavily in the Enlightenment principles of rationalism. It helps to think more calmly about: how can I do this, how can I help myself, how can we help each other, and what is the best way forward? I cannot say I am perfect, nowhere near, but I strive to do the best I can in the present. We can all be that little bit better for just doing the best we can right now.
