Donations, we have received very generous donations from Carnoustie Golf Links Management Committee, Carnoustie Rotary Club and Carnoustie Gala Committee which we are extremely grateful for. Also, thank you to all the parents who helped at the last Hall clean too. The group has also started a refurbishment programme in the hall where we are planning to create a more fit for purpose Kitchen and dining area and upgraded toilet facilities, we will keep you all in the loop as we move forward. Thanks for all your time, effort and support over the past 12 months and here’s to the next 12 action packed ones.
Carnoustie Scout Group Report 2018/19 I am extremely pleased to report that this has been another hugely successful year for Carnoustie Scout Group. Our numbers have increased again since last year and we currently have a record number of 144 young people enjoying Scouting in Carnoustie on a weekly basis which is 17% up from the previous year. This is not down to chance but as a result of the excellent team of great leaders we have in the Group. Each leader has their own unique quality which they bring to the Group when combined gives an amazing force to which I am immensely proud. The Scout Group currently comprises the 2 Beaver Colonies on a Monday and Friday, 3 Cub Packs meeting on a Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings, Scout Troop on a Friday and Explorer Unit also on a Friday. Numbers in the Beavers have increased towards the end of the year, Cubs have remained steady but our biggest growth has been in the Scouts where we are retaining the young people more than ever. Numbers in the Explorer Unit have remained constant although we have sadly lost some of our older members through work and study commitments. We continue to look for new members for all sections of the Group. I have had many highlights over the past year including the national beaver picnic at Meggernie in Glen Lyon and finding trolls. We have had numerous camps but Barrwood has been my personal favourite. The Blair Atholl Satellite Camp is also a firm favourite and the excitement of the scouts trading with others from different nations. We were lucky to have 3 members of the group taking part in the Dundee Scout Gang Show. The Group brought the District swimming gala trophy back to Carnoustie. I accompanied the scout band to Falkirk to a poignant ANZAC celebration. Without doubt every section of Carnoustie Scout Group continues to offer a high quality, varied and exciting programme to the members over the course of the year. This is only possible thanks go to our team of dedicated and committed volunteer leaders, section assistants and helpers for continuing to provide an interesting and stimulating programme on a weekly basis covering such a diverse range of activities. This is testament to the great number of Chief Scout Challenge badges which will be presented to our members this evening. We currently have the following warranted leaders - 4 Beaver Scout Leaders, 5 Cub Scout Leaders, 4 Scout Leaders and 2 Explorer Scout Leaders plus a further 12 section assistants. We continue to have great support from parents willing to help out on occasion. As always, we are continually on the lookout for anyone able and willing to help in whatever way. Thanks goes to Simon Laird in his inaugural year as chairperson of the efficient Parent’s Executive. Special thanks goes to our hard working volunteer secretary (Adrienne Ross) and treasurer (Carrie Higgins) who both stand down this year after a great number of years’ service. Thanks to our social convener Mel Anderson for all her hard work and keeping on track of the various emails. Thanks also go to Lindsay Ross and Natalie Mackland and the Christmas Post sub committee for once again efficiently and professionally organising our biggest fundraiser. Our donations for the post remain the main fundraising income for the Group. We continued working with neighbouring Scout Groups in Arbroath, Monifieth and Broughty Ferry. Thanks to Sandy Smith for all his work as quartermaster (equipment manager) for the group.
All the sections have taken part in events both at district level in South Angus, regional events in the East of Scotland as well as National events across Scotland. In the summer we held our stall and float at Carnoustie Gala Day and thanks to the members of the Parent’s Committee who helped at this event. In November we were well represented and smart at the Carnoustie Remembrance Day parade. We have embraced the new scouting #skillsforlife hashtag and this is none so more apparent than on our regular camps. Camping and the outdoors have been fundamental in the core values and witness to this is the number of zodiac awards being presented this evening. We have had over way over 1000 nights away cumulative at the Group over the past year. We have a diverse group of skilled individuals in the group from our band instructors and Makaton teachers to our skiing instructors and gorge walking leaders. We are very proud of the musicians in our Group with the Beavers winning their category at the Arbroath Music Festival. The Scout String Group and the Scout Wind Band all won first place in their categories. The year has been tinged with sadness with the untimely passing of Dean Morrison who had been a section assistant at Scouts and progressing to become a leader. We remain supportive to the family and in due course will organise a camp in Dean’s memory. We have building on our relationship with Monifieth Scout Group and this has increased over the past year or so but more so since December 2018 with mutual use of leader’s talents. We have also continued to have a strong relationship with our friends in the Falkirk area Scout Groups. Summer 2019 will see over 30 members of the Group attend the international Jamborette in Paisley, USA. This grew from meeting the leaders at Blair Atholl and hearing about the activities at the Jamborette. This will be a trip of a lifetime for the fortunate scouts and explorers attending this event. Scouting in Carnoustie continues to be varied and strong. We have a committed, talented and dedicated team of leaders suitably complimented by a hard working parent’s executive. This combination ensures that Carnoustie Scout Group can offer a varied programme to the 150 or so regular members every week. The future growth remains steady with a busy programme scheduled by all sections for the year ahead. Kenny Lee, Group Scout Leader
Beaver Report 2018/19 Both Beaver Colonies have had another successful year. We have around 50 boys and girls enjoying Beavers on a weekly basis on either a Monday or Friday. Both Colonies broadly run similar programmes to achieve the same badges and all Beavers have the opportunity to attend the many joint events as well as activities run by the Group. Our programme over the year has been varied and focussing on the various badges. Presentations have been made of all challenge awards. The Beavers have also been working on various activity badges. 12 Beavers achieved the bronze award of the Chief Scout Challenge. When Beavers leave to swim up to Cubs we always ask their favourite activity and without exception this is always the camps. The 10 nights away badge is now common place with our older Beavers. Our Beavers attended the National Beaver Picnic at Meggernie which was an amazing day out and trying out various activities and meeting other Beavers from across Scotland. Our highlight of the year was winning our class of the under 12s singing games category at the Arbroath & District Music Festival 2018. The Beavers all did really well and enjoyed the opportunity to perform on a professional stage. Beavers have had the opportunity to attend may residential experiences over the course of the year. The Beavers attended the Craig’s Camp in May last year and enjoyed being in tents. Then in March the Beavers enjoyed being day visitors to the Group Camp at Fordell Firs Activity Centre in Fife. We have enjoyed various activities over the year from husky racing at Easthaven Beach to dam building on the Lochty Burn. We were joint winners at the District Swimming Gala at Arbroath Swimming Pool so well done to Luke, Harris, Manny and Abby in the winning team. We have partied to celebrate Halloween and for our Christmas Party we visited Jumping Joeys in Arbroath. We have been on outings to the pantomime at the High School Theatre and the Dundee Scout Gang Show at the Whitehall Theatre. The Beavers also attended the Carnoustie Remembrance Day Parade. Our summer trip was to the Monikie Park to the Group Activities day. In Carnoustie we have continued to benefit from having a committed and dedicated leadership team and this is reflected in the great number and variety of activities which have been offered to the Beavers. Our thanks go to Rachael Barber, Lorna Hendry, Lesley Ritchie and Kenny Lee for their help, support and continued enthusiasm over the year to continue with the success of the colonies. Thanks to our young leaders Lewis McNicoll and Katy Roberts. Thanks also to all the leaders and parents who have helped from time to time especially Kenney Falconer. We are all looking forward to a continued varied programme in the coming year. Kenny Lee Rachael Barber Beaver Scout Leader Beaver Scout Leader
CARNOUSTIE ‘A’ CUB SCOUT PACK REPORT 2018/19 Tuesday Cubs are a long standing cub pack in Carnoustie and in August 2018, the running of the pack was undertaken by Kim Keillor and Heather Keillor with administration support from Pamela Millar. Thanks to the support from the Thursday Cub Pack run by Keith and the Sunday Cub Pack run by Joyce. We have at times received ideas and feedback from the other two packs. Since August our pack has seen some cubs move on to scouts with new cubs joining us from Beavers and from new. We are small and friendly group with our current numbers at 16 with room for more. During the terms our pack have completed many different badges. These have included the home help badge, personal safety badge, crafts badge and astronomy badge. We have also enjoyed learning about different culture’s like Chinese New Year and learning new games such as double Dutch skipping (which was difficult for the adults!) In addition, the older cubs have been successfully working to complete their Chief Scout Challenge Silver Award. We are currently working on the science badge and the disability badge which involves learning Makaton and are working on a challenge badge. We have had several camps that many of our cubs have attended which helped them to complete numerous badges. The most recent camp was also our closest and enjoyed by everyone who camped at Carnoustie Beach. The cubs have been given the chance to take part in various activities including archery and fishing. They are looking forward to our group camp at Barrwood where currently over 30 cubs are attending from the 3 different packs which will allow them to complete the outdoor badge. In January we came together with the rest of the South Angus District to compete in the swimming gala at Arbroath pool. All our competitors were fantastic and swam their hearts out. As part of our disability awareness badge we are learning Makaton for our cub promise, law and motto as well as learning a song which will be performed tonight. For this badge we have had the wonderful Anne Lochhead in to help the children to learn it all as well as Heather and I. Thank you Ann. Many thanks to everyone in Carnoustie Scout Group for you unquestioned support throughout the year. Without each of you helping in various ways Tuesday Cub Pack would not continue to be as successful as it is. Thank you Kim Keillor- Tuesday Cub Scout Leader Heather Keillor Tuesday Cub Section Assistant
Sunday Cubs AGM Report 2019 Another busy year has been completed at Sunday Cubs, marking the 2nd year since the pack started. Our Cubs that have moved up to Scouts have all successfully completed their Silver Challenge Award, a great achievement that they have all worked hard to earn. Highlights of the year have included our sleepover in the hall where we collected donations for the local Food Bank. Cubs from all 3 packs came together to collect much needed donations and to have a fun night staying together in the hall, not much sleeping was done though!! We have been working on badges including our science badge where amongst other things we learned about floating coins and made balloon rockets. The camping season will be starting soon with camps arranged at Fordell Firs, Barrwood and the Cub district camp at Jock Neish and we shall be working on our Outdoor Challenge badge at these camps. A lot of our Cubs are due to move up to Scouts in October and we will therefore have spaces available for new Cubs to start. If you know of anyone wishing to be added to the waiting list, please let me know. I would like to thank all the parents/helpers and our young leader David who have assisted us at pack meetings, camps, outings etc. over the past year, it really is much appreciated. Joyce McPhee Sunday Cub Leader

Explorer Report 2018/19 The Explorer Unit has had an extremely busy year. Our numbers have increased over the year with new members coming from Scouts. Altogether we have now have 12 young people coming along every Friday. Unfortunately, our older membership has been decreasing over the year as the young people focus on other commitments including employment and education. Our programme over the year has included developing the young people’s camping and survival skills as well as care and maintenance of the camping equipment. Presentations have been made of all challenge awards. We are proud that 2 Explorers successfully achieved their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award and are now working towards completion of their Gold level whilst 4 of the young members are working on their Bronze level award. Ross Clark represented the unit at the Blair Atholl Jamborette in 2018 and had an amazing experience. Our highlight of the year has included the gorge walking in the Trossachs with Falkirk Explorers and abseiling in the Avon Gorge. Whilst at Craig’s Camp we enjoyed kayaking under the Forth Bridges and climbing at the Edinburgh International Arena. We enjoyed trying out fencing at Dundee University. Explorers have been well represented at all the Group camps over the year including Barrwood, Torwood, Technocamp, Ballister Park and Craig’s Camp. We were winners at the District Swimming Gala at Arbroath Swimming Pool so well done to Greg, Joel and Emily in the winning team. The Explorers attended the Carnoustie Remembrance Day Parade. In Carnoustie we have an enthusiastic group of Explorer Scouts who are keen to take part in new activities or further develop existing activities. Thanks to Stewart Bisgrove who has continued to provide inspiration and support as assistant leader. Thanks to the parents for their continued support of the unit. Craig Barber Explorer Scout Leader
