April 2021 Newsletter Message from Library Director Deanna Wilson I am both honored and humbled to be coming back to Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library as the new library director. I have missed my job as assistant director dearly and cannot wait to get back to work in this new capacity! I would like to thank Susan Clout for bravely taking on the challenge of filling this position during perhaps the most trying time for our little library. Thank you as well to the library’s board of directors, to the Friends of the Library, and to the community for the many donations which continue to pour in. Thank you to Marie Barker for her tireless service to the library. Without all of you, we would not be where we are today: getting back on our feet again. Finally, I want to express my infinite gratitude to our previous directors, Shelby Monroe and Anna Römer. I have learned so much working under their management and aspire to lead our library with the excellence that these wonderful women exhibit! I am committed to serving this community to the best of my ability. Please know that my door will always be open for your questions, concerns, suggestions and input. I look forward to crossing paths with you at the library very soon! The library will gradually re-open the community room to interested groups starting in April! Please watch the website (www.hobbslibrary.org) as information becomes available. 227 Main Street * PO BOX 107 * Lovell, Maine 04051 * (207) 925-3177 * hobbslibrary.org
Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library Newsletter – April 2021 2 Introducing Library Director Deanna Wilson Having grown up in Lovell, Deanna Wilson has been a patron of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library since she was a child. The love of reading that was stirred in those days has followed her through life, eventually culminating in her becoming children's librarian at CHML in 2015. She was subsequently promoted to the position of assistant director and served in that capacity until 2020. As Library Director, Deanna is committed to providing quality programming for children and adults and nurturing a love of reading in the community as a whole. In this way, she hopes to pass on to others what CHML has given to her. Deanna also maintains a private practice as a licensed massage therapist. When not working, she enjoys being outdoors and spending time with her husband and two children. Message from Interim Director, Susan Clout First, I want to thank you all for giving me the opportunity to fill in at the library these past nine months. It’s been a wonderful learning experience for me. Thank you for your patience and your trust while I found my way as the interim director. I quickly needed to learn how to run Zoom meetings, how to write a grant, how to decide what books to order and then order them. I had to learn the Sierra program (book checkout), the Minerva 227 Main Street * PO BOX 107 * Lovell, Maine 04051 * (207) 925-3177 * hobbslibrary.org
Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library Newsletter – April 2021 3 program (searching for books), Squarespace (to manage the website), Mailchimp (for sending mass emails) and Little Green Light (a program we use to keep track of our donors). I learned how a non-profit organization like CHML works and how the Board has such a crucial role in the everyday operations. It was exciting meeting so many new people. Some of you have been here forever but we had yet to meet. Many others are new to our community. It’s been wonderful to work at a business that is part of the new growth in town. I know I’ll see many of you around, especially if you play golf. That’s where I’ll be this summer. If I can’t be seen, I’m on the green! I am as excited as you to welcome our new Library Director, Deanna Wilson. I have lots of faith in her and I’m sure she will accomplish great and memorable things during her time here. Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library Newsletter – April 2021 4 about the importance of being ourselves, and how our “no” to what isn’t us can be our “yes” to happiness. Stories this month: Laura Numeroff, Sherman Crunchley; Penninah Schram, “The Magic Pomegrante” (a Jewish folktale); David Shannon, A Bad Case of Stripes. We also have a chance to talk about the stories. Folktales and picture books are for anyone who loves a good story. A nice thing about picture books is that you have the story told in two ways: from the author writing and from the illustrator. Sometimes those are the same person, as is true for this month’s stories, and sometimes there are interesting differences in the stories told. Folktales invite us into the oral storytelling traditions of different peoples, shaped and reshaped over the years from teller to teller. PAGE TURNERS: BOOK DISCUSSION ON MONDAY, APRIL 12 at 1:15 PM EST All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join the Page Turners, the Library’s afternoon book discussion group, which is currently meeting online. On April 12, we depart from our series on new Americans to read a Victorian page-turner, Wilkie Collins’s The Moonstone (1868), often considered one of the first detective novels. Print copies of The Moonstone are readily available through Minerva, and electronic versions are free on Kindle or at Project Gutenberg. We return on May 10 to our series on new Americans by way of Ocean Vuong’s On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous (2019), a novel about a Vietnamese immigrant family in Hartford, CT that has been widely praised for its luminous writing and its powerful, painful story. And on June 14, we will revisit the lyrical prose of Paule Marshall, whose Brown Girl, Brownstones we read in January, to read her 1983 novel Praisesong for the Widow. 227 Main Street * PO BOX 107 * Lovell, Maine 04051 * (207) 925-3177 * hobbslibrary.org
Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library Newsletter – April 2021 5 If you would like to attend the Page Turners meetings or wan further information about this Library offering, please contact Sue Lanser at lanser@brandeis.edu or 925-6244. She can add you to the Page Turners mailing list and ensure that you receive discussion questions and a zoom link in advance of each meeting. Our April meeting will be fully online, so you don’t have to be in Lovell to take part. And when we return to meeting at the Library, we will continue to include an online option for those who cannot attend in person. “Escape” at the Hobbs Story Swap Monday, April 19, 1:00-2:30 pm Our April theme – timely, always timely – will be ESCAPE. All are welcome! Join the Story Swap on Zoom to tell or listen to 5-minute tales bouncing around the idea of getting away. Tell about successful escapes, wished-for escapes, barely-made-it escapes, or, after a year of pandemic constraints, the just-plain-inescapable! Folktales, historical stories, family memories, anything. In addition to telling our own stories, in recent months we’ve talked about work by other storytellers. Here are three brief stories about very different “escapes” that you might like to view before our April 19 meeting: The late Syd Lieberman tells “Aunt Helen” – his great-aunt’s escape from the Nazis (video is very blurry – best to watch it in a small screen) https://racebridgesstudio.com/video/aunt-helen/ Donna Washington tells a Brer Rabbit story, “Scaring Crows” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFyCD- O5nbc&feature=youtu.be Elizabeth Ellis tells the story of Mary MacLeod Bethune saving her school from the Ku Klux Klan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHJ6BTjw4pU 227 Main Street * PO BOX 107 * Lovell, Maine 04051 * (207) 925-3177 * hobbslibrary.org

Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library Newsletter – April 2021 8 Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library Strategic Framework Thank you for participating in the first phase of our new strategic framework development! After receiving community reflections, our consultant will help the Board build the framework to guide us for the next 3-5 years. Lovell Town Planning Board Survey Coming Up The Lovell Planning Board has formed a committee to work on an update to the 1992 Town of Lovell Comprehensive Plan that was developed in accordance with State legislation passed in the late 1980s. The goal is to provide input to our town government to plan and prepare for the challenges we will face in the future. As part of the committee’s work, town residents and taxpayers will be asked to participate in a survey so that we may accurately understand and represent the citizens and needs of our town today and for coming decades. We urge you to complete our survey honestly and candidly. Our goal is to get a high level of participation to assure that the information we gather is an accurate representation of our town population. We hope to use the survey results as part of a plan that will help uide our local government, decision makers, and all those interested in the future of our town. The survey will be online and in paper, with copies at the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library, available in April-May. Thank you in advance for your help!
