SOME • Relationship difficulties – separation and divorce, pregnancy and parenting difficulties. COMMON • Financial stress. ISSUES • Work-related pressures, incl job changes. • Recent or pending unemployment. • Social isolation and loneliness. • Physical illness. • Drug and alcohol misuse / abuse. • Gambling.

NEWS TO CONSIDER… • Your behaviour influences the behaviour of those around you – but it requires us to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. • Increased recognition of need for a ‘gendered lens’ in men's health treatment and support. • Increasing number of men’s specific health services.

RECOGNISE What behaviour change have you noticed? (what warning lights are flashing on the dashboard) When & Where will you start the conversation? Who could you refer to if needed?
RESPOND • Act early, with curiosity and compassion • Activity based (e.g., Walk & Talk) • Avoid “shoulds and musts” • Focus on behaviour change, AND highlight your concern? (e.g., "You normally call me once a week to check in, but you’re not doing that as much lately. I’m worried about you and would like to know what's going on for you at the moment?") • Did you get a Redirect? Organise a time soon to RECONNECT
RESPOND (cont.) • This IS NOT about you solving the problem • This is about letting someone verbalise the concerns that have been worrying them • Engage (body language, minimize your distractions) • Actively Listen • Keep judgements to yourself (curiosity first – seek to explore)
REFER – Empower • CARE, don’t carry • Work with them to identify options • Coaching questions first & foremost “Who’s been a good support for you in the past?“ “What has worked for you previously?” “How can I support you?”
