Member Monthly June 2020 DIRECTOR OF GOLF - Alan Scheer, PGA It has been some difficult times the past couple of months and we wish everyone to be healthy and well. We are happy to be back open and operating as close to normal as permitted. During these trying times the Ownership at Steele Canyon has remained committed to keeping a product that remains one of the best in San Diego County. The course is in great shape and Steele Canyon is getting greater exposure with other courses throughout the County having some difficulties. The numbers speak for themselves and we would like to welcome all of our New Members since the last March newsletter was sent out. EVENTS & CATERING DEPT - Rene Acosta Greetings to all! My name is Rene Acosta and I am your new Food and Beverage Director here at Steele Canyon. It’s a crazy time to start a new job like this, especially with more events having to be postponed than planned. And I know that I have big shoes to fill now that Barry Rice has retired, but I am looking forward to bringing new and fun ideas to our Steele Canyon family. My background is in the hospitality industry with a long history of working with innovative chefs to bring creativity to the table. I’m also an avid golfer and have always thought of Steele Canyon as a local jewel. The restaurant is now open for both inside as well as al fresco dining on the patio. We are looking forward to celebrating Father’s Day. While we’d love to have all dads and their families here in person, we’ve planned several delicious meal options to enjoy with loved ones at home. Wave me down when you see me on the floor. I’d love to meet everyone, and I am interested in your own thoughts regarding ideas for these abnormal times. Finally, I reached out to Barry Rice and he sent me these words to pass along to everyone. From Barry Rice To all of our wonderful Steele Canyon family, members and friends, I am delighted to write this to help introduce Rene Acosta who is stepping in and assuming the position of Food & Beverage Director at Steele Canyon Golf Club. Rene comes to us with a rich background in the Food Service industry, a wealth of knowledge in serving the needs of our members and catered event clients plus a warm and welcoming personality that I am certain you all will enjoy as you become acquainted. As we begin to reopen the food service portion of our business, please be sure to stop and introduce yourself to Rene and make him feel as welcome as you have with all of our Steele Canyon team. As for my plans, I am looking forward to the next chapter of my life as I enter retirement. I can’t find the words to fully express what a blessing it has been to be a part of the Steele Canyon family for close to thirteen years. From my very first day, you have made it a joy to be part of the activities, events and daily lives that have made up an amazing collection of memories that I will think back on and cherish. While I am sad to be leaving the daily interaction that I was privileged to share with you all, I am grateful for the memories I get to take with me of fun and wonderful times with extraordinary people. My only regret will be that I didn’t truly have the opportunity to say my goodbyes in person. Happy trails to all!
SUPERINTENDENT - Antonio Osuna Golf Course Maintenance As summer begins and the days get hotter and longer, the soil dries out much more quickly. Because of the high water cost, it is a constant struggle to make the best use of our resources. We’ve found that by using the soaker hoses placed to hit the dry spots on the course allows us to use the large sprinkler heads for a much shorter time. Hopefully you’ve all noticed the new Canyon 5 drop area we added during the spring.
