FEATURE The Medieval So ul Of Tuscany In salmon-coloured Siena, Mavis Teo strolls through cobbled street s to F or all its charm and compact navigability – it only takes half an hour to walk through the very heart of Siena’s history-laden centre, which is a UNESCO discover a glorious historical past and world heritage site today. a smorgasbord of delec table Tuscan cuisine. For some inexplicable reason, the narrow cobbled alleys feel less congested despite the throngs, making the city immensely pleasant to see on foot. The tempo of life here also feels less harried, compared to other touristy areas in Italy. This allows one to enjoy the sights and soak in the ambience at a more leisurely pace. Under The Tuscan Sky My three-day sojourn was an eye-opener to a medieval NAUTIQUE JUL/AUG 15 mystery. In the 1300s, Siena was one of the most important cities in Europe as Italy was a renaissance country. It had a huge military force, was a cultural city, and one of the foremost centres of developing humanist disciplines. It is also where the Palio, a hair-raising bareback horse race originated, and is still held today during summer. 06 Photo credits: Mavis Teo, Toscana Promozione, Consorzio Agrario, Bruno Bruchi for fresco,Villa Scacciapensieri, Le Logge, Arnolfo.
Art lovers would also enjoy spending an afternoon at the Santa Maria della Scala (www.santamariadellascala. com) which was Siena’s main hospital for over 800 years until the 1970s. It’s now one of Italy’s largest museums with a vast collection of art in its restored chapels and wall frescoes. Restoration is still a work in progress. The Pinoteca Nazionale (www.spsae-si.beniculturali. it ) showcases Sienese paintings from the 12th century. A walk to the Museo Civico (www.archivio.comune. siena.it) will reward you with a sight or two of Italy’s most significant paintings: the 14th century Simone Martini’s Maestà and Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s fresco, The Allegory of Good and Bad Government. On the subject of memorable sights, the panorama of the medieval city should not be overlooked. Climb 400 steps up the Torre del Mangia to see all of the city. If you have a sweet tooth, you should not leave Siena without trying the ricciarelli and panforte at Nannini (www.grupponannini.it), a historic pastry shop in Siena. The ankle or knees are the commonly the gluteals (buttocks), hamstrings, quadriceps and affected joints. smaller muscle groups like the gastrocnemius (calf ) and tibialis anterior (front shin). persistent, it is recommended that the training intensity be reduced to a pain-free level so as to allow healing of the muscles and the bones. At the same time it is advised that strengthening of the lower limb muscles should be done. This would allow the muscles to take greater load during high-impact activities. Following which, you are advised to increase your exercise level by 10 percent gradually every week, so as to prevent overuse injuries. Gym Injuries sustained in the gym are similar to overuse injuries. Examples of gym injuries: 1 Plantar fasciitis and/or Achilles tendinopathy – pain experienced at the sole of the foot or at the back or the heel. This usually occurs as a result of high-impact activities like jumping and long-distance running. This is aggravated by poor biomechanics and weak lower limb muscles. 2 Patellofemoral pain syndrome – usually presents with pain at the front of the knee. It occurs as a result of overuse that is aggravated by muscle imbalances around the knee. 3 Compartment syndrome – similar to those sustained in overuse injuries during aerobic exercise. The management is similar to that of overuse injuries Examples of overuse injuries: sustained during aerobic exercise. 1 Shin splints – is defined as a throbbing ache at the lower aspect of the leg due to fatigued and irritated muscles at the shin. Females are at a greater risk of developing shin splints due to reduced bone mineral density. 2 Compartment syndrome – occurs as a result of repetitive overuse that causes the fascia surrounding the calf muscles to reduce their elasticity. This results in a build-up in pressure around the calves while exercising. 3 Patellar tendinopathy – also known as jumper’s knee. Poor function of the quadriceps and impaired biomechanics can cause pain and overuse of the patella tendon during high-impact landing like jumping. Steps To Prevent Injuries Aerobic exercise consists of different kinds of moves, including marching on the spot and jumping. Appropriate NAUTIQUE JUL/AUG 15 footwear is necessary to absorb the force and shock generated from the repeated high-impact landing so as to prevent any lower limb injury. It is advised that you can get a well-fitted pair of insoles if you have flat feet. Prior to exercising, warm-ups and stretching exercises can help promote blood flow to the muscles and this would reduce your risk of injury. If the problem is 13
Weight Training It is recommended that people of all ages consult a health professional to design a training regimen that is safe for their age and capabilities. Having a professional to supervise your weight training session will ensure that you use the correct training techniques and equipment. According to studies, the most common injury sustained during weight training is people dropping the weights on themselves. Therefore, if you are unable to complete one full set of repetitions, it is likely that you are lifting more weight than you can handle. Now that you are using the right amount of weights, it is important that you maintain proper form throughout your training so as to eliminate excessive stress from being placed at the joints, tendons and/or ligaments. through postures where weight transfers through One common cause for poor posture occurs as a result the hands through different shoulder positions can of our occupation. SEEN & Heard The Marine Biodiversity of Raffles Marina By Prof Chou Loke Ming, Lionel Ng Chin Soon, Toh Kok Ben Tropical Marine Science Institute National University of Singapore S ingapore’s natural shores have to a large extent been replaced by various types of coastal development. The survey showed surprisingly diverse communities of marine life in Raffles Marina. Fifty-two species of small animals such as polychaetes (segmented worms, 82.4 percent), arthropods (e.g. crabs, shrimp; 9.0 It is commonly accepted that such percent), echinoderms (e.g. sea cucumbers, brittle stars; 4.2 percent), development is detrimental to marine molluscs (e.g. bivalves, snails; 4.0 percent), and other animals (e.g. life as habitats get obliterated. small fish; 0.5 percent) were documented from the marina’s seabed. The project surveyed marine life in the seabed, on the berthing pontoons, and in the waters within, and surrounding each marina. The NAUTIQUE JUL/AUG 15 biodiversity assessment for Raffles Marina is reported in this article. One interesting aspect was the mass fish kill in February 2014 caused by a heavy plankton bloom and it provided the opportunity to assess the recovery of marine life and the Figure 1.
