Vol. 18 – May 2020 ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCEMENTS COVID-19 SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM LOUISIANA ENTERTAINMENT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CHRIS STELLY Friends: Louisiana is no stranger to challenges. Major impactful events like Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Gustav, the BP oil spill, and floods have impacted almost every area of our state and interrupted our day to day routines. Every time, we have emerged stronger and more resilient! Covid-19 is much different; however, the end result will be NO different. WE WILL MAKE IT THROUGH STRONGER AND MORE RESILIENT! I want to express my gratitude and thanks to you for everything you do on a daily basis to make our jobs easier. Together, we have proven that we can and will make a difference in the entertainment industry. As a state, we’ve ranked higher than most others in motion picture production and that is primarily due to the work everyone here does promoting our state. Please stay safe during this time and heed the warnings. Slight adjustments to the way we navigate this world, may mean all the difference and we can resume some semblance of normalcy sooner rather than later. In closing, Louisiana Economic Development has set up a resource page that I encourage you to check daily. Our role as economic developers at this point in time is to monitor, provide information as soon as we get it, and to make sure we are doing everything we can to take care of our businesses that employ Louisiana residents. Here’s the link. https://www.opportunitylouisiana.com/covid19 Again, take care of yourself, be kind to everyone around you, we will make it through! ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCEMENTS[2]
Vol. 18 – May 2020 ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCEMENTS COVID-19 PANDEMIC RESPONSE LOUISIANA FILM INDUSTRY: ANSWERING THE CALL FOR HELP During this incredibly difficult time, the Louisiana film industry is once again stepping up to help those most in need. As part of the IATSE Local 478 Medical Supply Drive, thousands of much-needed medical supplies continue to be donated to Louisiana medical facilities in desperate need of vital equipment right now. 30,000 gloves, thousands of n95 masks and respirators, hundreds of isolation gowns, coveralls, booties, caps plus miscellaneous supplies like soap, sanitizer, alcohol, wipes, personal toiletries, and full-face shields have now been delivered to first responders, nurses, and doctors on the front lines of the COVID-19 battle here in Louisiana. While making a delivery to a Louisiana hospital, one doctor said to the team, ”Are those all masks? Whoa. We really need these. I’m on, like, day 3 of this mask.” IATSE members donated from their personal kits, sets, and shops. NCIS New Orleans producers and crew members brought in vital PPE gear from their set and costume designers from across the state put their talents and creative abilities into making much-needed face masks. Vol. 18 – May 2020 LIVE PRODUCTION SPOTLIGHT: KIDS’ ORCHESTRA Kids’ Orchestra is keeping the music alive for all families during this difficult time through a virtual online learning program called KO@Home. Educators recognized that children needed a sense of normalcy and a way to express their creativity in this time of uncertainty, so they designed a way for kids to continue their musical education virtually. Kids’ Orchestra now offers weekly mini-lesson videos from their teachers via YouTube. They also offer a series on instrument care and a handling guide for nine different instruments. There is also a long list of music resources for families to access at any time online. Kids’ Orchestra is using social media to inspire kids and parents to have a little fun while staying at home. Educators share different types of entertaining hands-on activities like “making your own instruments” with items found in your home. The reason for the new online training is simple. “Kids’ Orchestra is committed to pushing our mission forward by bringing music back into the lives of our students and families.” Kids’ Orchestra is an afterschool program for 340 elementary-age students from across East Baton Rouge Parish. Students from public, private and charter schools get together two to four times a week to study an instrument while learning to perform as an ensemble for different types of performances held throughout the year. Kids’ Orchestra provides an instrument on loan, plus homework assistance during their sessions. For the last ten years, Kids’ Orchestra has worked tirelessly to provide structure and consistency for local children, allowing them to find success not only in music but in their daily school and home life as well.
