O n March 21, Governor Brian P. Kemp announced that he had selected Chelsea Rathburn as Georgia’s next Poet Laureate. Rathburn, a professor of English and creative writing at Young Harris College, succeeds Judson Mitcham as Poet Laureate. Rathburn is the author of three poetry collections, A Raft of Grief (2013), The Shifting Line (2005), winner of the 2005 Richard Wilbur Award, and Still Life with Mother and Knife (2019). Her poems have been widely published in the nation’s top journals, including The Atlantic, Poetry and New England Review, among others. Born in Jacksonville and raised in Miami, Florida, Rathburn has deep roots in the state of Georgia, where her mother’s family has lived since the 1830s. She holds a B.A. from Florida State University and an M.F.A. from the University of Arkansas. 2. Alejandro Campo, a junior at Flowery Branch High School in Flowery Branch, was the winner of the Georgia Poetry Out Loud (POL) State finals held in Contact Information March. GEORGIA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS UPCOMING EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES •O n June 5, the Fox Theatre Institute (FTI), the Department of Community Affairs and Georgia Council for the Arts will partner to present a day-long workshop in Athens for small and mid-sized theatres across the state. FTI will discuss their grants to historic theatres while GCA will lead a session on how to write successful grant applications as well as talk about GCA’s grant program. Invited guests from the Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville will discuss how theatres can work with local government and the community. • On May 30, 2019 - Washington County Regional Medical Center will open an exhibit of sixteen pieces of the State Art Collection displayed throughout the hospital. This is the second exhibit of its kind for GCA and is part of an ongoing initiative to place pieces of the State Art Collection in rural hospitals and to cultivate conversations about the role of the arts in health and wellbeing. QUARTERLY DIVISION HIGHLIGHTS 1. The 4th annual Georgia Innovation Summit in February was a big success with more than 150 attending to hear from 24 dynamic speakers. The Summit is a partnership between the Georgia Mentor Protégé Connection, Centers of Innovation, the Small Business & Entrepreneurship team, and Georgia Tech Enterprise Innovation Institute. The theme for this year was “Having a Disruptive Mindset” with panels on “Innovation Leadership, “Workforce Innovation”, and “Technologies Driving Innovation.” 2. COI-Logistics held the 2019 Georgia Logistics Summit Regional Forum in Cartersville in March. The event brought together 400 attendees from the region and the state to network and learn about the state’s Network Georgia strategy and the Appalachian Regional Port. GDEcD Commissioner Pat Wilson gave the opening remarks and introduced a video welcome from Governor Kemp. 3. C OI-Energy continues a focus on expanding the controlled environment agriculture and renewable energy sectors in Georgia. One ongoing project proposes to build 80+ acres of indoor farms/food assembly (to grow leafy greens that are currently imported to the state) consisting of indoor farms, packaging, cold storage, seeding, water management and designated areas for future alternative and renewable energy systems. Afterwards, attendees had opportunity to visit one-on-one with the technology providers to learn more about their products. 6. C OI-Manufacturing connected Metcam with the Georgia Tech Capstone Design Program so that a group of engineering students could work on a project to improve the design and manufacturability of Metcam’s TramBed, which is an innovative pickup truck bed extension system. COIM provided matching funds towards the project as part of MetCam receiving an award as ‘2018 Georgia Small Manufacturer of the Year’. 7. The COI-Energy grant project with UGA and Sweet Grass Dairy has developed two cheeses which have a shelf life of several months to allow Sweet Grass Diary to ship products to a much wider range of national and international markets. 8. COI-Aerospace moderated panels and breakout sessions at the “Urban & Regional Air Mobility: An Opportunity for Georgia” Forum at Georgia Tech. The event is just the latest in a 10-year effort by COI-Aerospace to foster a growing unmanned aircraft sector in Georgia. 9. COI-Information Technology supported a kickoff meeting of Canadian Cyber organizations with counterparts in Georgia, including the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance (CATA Alliance) and the Georgia Cyber Center, in moving forward with a collaborative outreach between the two regions on cyber security projects. 10. G eorgia Aerospace Day took place on February 28 at the State Capitol! It was a great success with almost 100 Georgia aerospace representatives attending to discuss their industry with state leaders. COI-Aerospace released the findings of the latest Aerospace Industry Economic Impact study by Georgia Tech which documented the over 108,000 jobs and $57 billion annual economic impact to the state. Governor Kemp and Lt. Governor Duncan stopped by to give remarks. The Georgia House of Representatives also passed a resolution commending the Georgia aerospace industry. 11. C OI-Manufacturing organized a Women in Manufacturing (WiM) “Sites of Statesboro” event on March 5. Thirty- two attendees participated in the full day program, which comprised manufacturers from Metro Atlanta, Augusta and Savannah. The group toured the facilities of the Georgia Southern University (GSU) Manufacturing Engineering program, as well as the local Great Dane facility. The event received excellent feedback; several connections between company representatives and GSU faculty and students may lead to new research projects and internship opportunities. 12. The COI sponsored Georgia Collegiate Cup Hack-a-Thon in January in Atlanta was a huge success with 16 teams from 9 universities participating. The focus of the event was for student teams to develop concepts to improve the quality of life in Georgia for specific challenges in three categories – coding, design, and case studies. COI staff served as judges and mentors for the competition with Georgia Tech teams taking home first place in design and case studies, while a team from Middle Georgia State University took home first place in coding. 13. C OI-Manufacturing sponsored the People’s Choice Award for the undergraduate level Georgia Tech InVenture Prize competition broadcast on Georgia Public Broadcasting. COI also sponsored and served as judges in the Georgia Tech K-12 InVenture Prize which reached over 6,000 Georgia students this year. 14. C OI-Information Technology along with COI-Manufacturing worked with Pulse Centers of Cartersville, which develops and manufactures Pulse Electro Magnetic Field therapy equipment, to help the company update their products to expand its market presence in the commercial and consumer marketplaces. COI connected Pulse to local industrial designers, the International Trade Team, as well as the Regional Project Manager to support expansion plans by Pulse. UPCOMING EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES • COI Regional Innovation Tours – The COI team will visit communities across Georgia to learn more about the local innovation ecosystems, how to expand innovation programs using a combination of local and state-wide resources, and better connect COI programs to the communities. Visits to Rome, Cartersville, Augusta, Columbus, Macon, coastal Georgia, and South Georgia are planned during Q4FY19 and into Q1FY20. Film FILM, MUSIC AND DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT By the Numbers Georgia is currently hosting: 39 television series in various stages of pre- production or production. 15 feature films 1 television pilot Clint Eastwood on the set of the Georga-filmed “The Mule.” DIVISION PROFILE The Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Office develops the state’s film, television, & commercial production industries by marketing the state to production companies; location scouting; and coordinating the filming needs of companies with other state agencies, local governments, and citizens. The office actively works to develop the industry’s infrastructure and workforce, certifies projects under the Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act, and oversees the Camera Ready community program to engage municipalities throughout Georgia. QUARTERLY DIVISION HIGHLIGHTS 1. On May 2nd, the Carter Library kicked off an 8-month exhibit celebrating the history of the film industry entitled “Georgia On My Screen.” Props and costumes from numerous Georgia-lensed projects, such as “Stranger Things,” “The Walking Dead,” “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy,” and many more will be featured in the exhibit. 2. The Georgia-lensed feature Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame had a $1.2 billion opening its first weekend — the biggest in movie history. Film FILM, MUSIC AND DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT UPCOMING EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES The film office sponsors and participates in numerous local film festivals, and typically has passes available if you would like to attend a screening. Here is a list of upcoming festivals. American Youth Film Festival, Atlanta (June 12 - 15, 2019) - The American Youth Festival Group (AYFG) launched its film festival division, The American Youth Film Festival (AYFF) in 2015 at the Columbus State University Center for International Education. Entries are open to students in three categories: Middle School, High School, or College. Judging categories include animation, comedy, commercials, documentaries, feature films, music videos, public service announcements, science fiction, or short films. The festival includes screenings, panel discussions and workshops for young people. Atlanta Shortsfest (July 11 - 13, 2019) - Atlanta Shortsfest showcases a diverse mix of short films (under 45 minutes) by filmmakers from across the globe in a wide range of genres. The festival was established to spotlight and promote excellent short films, and provide an important platform to share work with appreciative audiences and fellow filmmakers. The event is held at Atlanta’s Synchronicity Theater. RKDS Film Fest (July 6 - 14, 2019) - The RKDS Film Fest is an international film festival created to highlight the film industry in Valdosta and South Georgia and features films from all over the world alongside major celebrities. In 2018 celebrity guests included Ricky Schroder, Simone Griffeth, Sonny Shroyer, and Burt Reynolds in his final appearance. Four Georgia- based companies were recognized for being outstanding, unique and impactful small businesses. This year’s 2019 Small Business ROCK STARS are: ASW Distillery: (Fulton County); InPrime Legal: (Cobb County); Oyster Fine Bamboo Fly Rods: (Fannin County); and, Southern Fiber Worx: (Crisp County) 2. The 31st Georgia Quail Hunt took place February 6 – 8 in Albany, Georgia. The event hosted 24 business leaders and site selection consultants from around the country. Governor Kemp attended the Wednesday evening reception, where he gave remarks. Georgia Quail Hunt is hosted by Georgia Allies and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. 3. GLOBAL COMMERCE UPCOMING EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES • June 3 – 6, 2019: GDEcD, in partnership with eight companies/organizations, will exhibit at the 2019 BIO International Convention in Philadelphia, PA. The BIO International Convention is hosted by the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO). BIO represents more than 1,100 biotechnology companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centers and related organizations across the United States and in more than 30 other nations. BIO members are involved in the research and development of innovative healthcare, agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology products. • June 10 – 12, 2019: Members of the International Investment team will travel to Washington, D.C. to take part in the SelectUSA Investment Summit. The SelectUSA Investment Summit is the highest-profile event dedicated to promoting foreign direct investment (FDI) in the United States. It connects qualified foreign firms directly with U.S. economic development organizations to facilitate business investment and job creation. 8

The office oversees meetings with foreign communications and activities with foreign governments and is the state’s liaison to dignitaries from 21 countries members of the Consular Corps. Kemp was sworn in as Georgia’s 83rd Governor. GDEcD and Georgia Power hosted a luncheon for the Consular Corps and Trade Offices before they witnessed the inauguration ceremony. 21 Consulates General were represented, and an additional 35 Honorary Consuls and Trade Officers and other distinguished guests were in attendance. The countries represented cover North, Central, and South America; Eastern and Western Europe; the Middle East; Asia, and Africa. The group included major investor nations, trading partners, allies and friends, and all bore witness to the state’s peaceful transition of power. 2. Opening Ceremony of the new Dutch Consulate General The newest addition to the Consular Corps, the office of the Consulate General of the Netherlands, held an opening ceremony on March 27 in Atlanta, and Governor Kemp marked the occasion by unveiling the seal of the Consulate along with the visiting Dutch Trade Minister, Sigrid Kaag. The Consulate is the Netherlands’ fifth office in the U.S. The new location in Atlanta follows a 2014 visit by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, during which he promoted the strong economic relationship between the Netherlands and the Southeastern U.S. The new office focuses primarily on supporting economic ties through business, government and education connections. The Dutch government has established a goal of significantly increasing American jobs supported by Dutch investment and trade – we look forward to working with them to achieve this goal of creating more jobs for Georgians. 4. The International Consular Ball, hosted by the Georgia Council for International Visitors, was held on Saturday, May 11, at the Intercontinental Hotel in Atlanta. This evening, in its 38th installment, is Atlanta’s longest-running international black-tie tradition and the premier diplomatic event honoring the Consular Corps in Georgia. Georgia exporters with Governor Kemp at the March press conference touting our record-breaking 2018 international numbers. 124 New companies have engaged DIVISION PROFILE with GDEcD trade services since the start of FY19. GDEcD’s nationally recognized International Trade Division works to bolster Georgia exports and brand the state as a competitive source of quality products and services. The division includes International Representatives located in 12 strategic global markets and assists Georgia companies to expand their sales worldwide. The Trade division provides Georgia businesses with the Global Insight and Global Connections they need to successfully diversify their international customer base. QUARTERLY DIVISION HIGHLIGHTS 1. 2 018 Trade Numbers Released In March, Governor Kemp announced the official release of Georgia’s 2018 trade numbers with a press conference at the State Capitol. Georgia set records in 2018 with total trade reaching a new high of $128.6 billion and exports surpassing $40.5 billion for the first time ever. Companies in Georgia exported to 212 unique countries and territories in 2018 with the top five markets including Canada, Mexico, China, Germany and Singapore. Georgia also reclaimed its rank as the 11th largest exporting state in the nation. Twelve Georgia exporters took part in the press conference with two GDEcD trade clients providing testimonials on the importance of trade and export promotion services like those provided by GDEcD’s international trade division. Representatives from Georgia’s diverse export promotion ecosystem were also in attendance. 2. INTERNATIONAL TRADE 3. Domotex GDEcD’s trade division exhibited with sixteen companies from Georgia’s flooring industry at Domotex Hannover trade show in January. The Georgia, USA booth was co-sponsored by the American Floor Covering Alliance (AFA) based in Dalton, GA. Companies reported more than $3.8 million in cumulative sales as a direct result of show participation. Georgia’s flooring industry supplies more than 45% of the world’s carpeting and rugs and leads the nation in floor covering product exports with $442.5 million exported in 2018 alone. 4. Canadian Inbound Buyers Mission Working with the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA), Georgia’s trade team recently hosted a delegation of buyers from Canada’s beer, wine and spirits industry. The delegation spent two days meeting one-on-one with Georgia suppliers and touring local food retail facilities across the state. Seven Georgia companies from regions 1, 3, 6, 11 and 12 participated in meetings with the Canadian buyers. UPCOMING EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES •S EUS-Canada – June 2-4, 2019 Join GDEcD at the 12th Annual SEUS-CP conference in Montreal, Canada. The SEUS-CP alliance brings together six southeastern U.S. states and six Canadian provinces to promote trade opportunities between and among the jurisdictions. Canada has been Georgia’s largest export market for more than two decades. The 2019 conference will feature a robust business-to-business matchmaking program focused on opportunities in the smart mobility, transportation, smart cities, logistics and IT sectors. Thus far 6 articles have been produced, including an interview with the CEO of Porsche USA, with 10,778 reads and 3.6 million impressions through supported advertising on handelsblatt.com. 5. The Georgia Made program is live at GeorgiaMade.org. Companies must show that their product is more than 50% made in our state. We are currently in a soft launch period as we selectively identify companies to seed the program. RURAL INITIATIVES By the Numbers 46 This quarter, the RGI team is assisting 46 rural counties, industries, and project managers on collaborative projects. 80 The RGI team has completed community meetings in 80 rural counties. TOURISM By the Numbers On March 4, the Tourism Product Development Team awarded more than $64,000 in tourism product development grants to 14 new and expanding projects across the state. The Division also helps communities develop well-planned and sustainable tourism products. QUARTERLY DIVISION HIGHLIGHTS 1. Members of the Global Market Development team participated in a Mexico sales mission with Brand USA in January. Meetings and events were held in Mexico City and Monterrey where the team met with over 250 travel agents, 30 key tour operators and 50 media in the two cities. 2. Georgia Tourism attended the American Bus Association (ABA) conference January 25-30. Georgia Tourism was a sponsor of the event and Domestic Sales Manager Lacey Cameron managed the Georgia booth at the marketplace where she met with over 50 tour operators. 3. On Feb. 5, Governor Brian P. Kemp was joined by leaders from Georgia’s tourism industry for the annual Tourism, Hospitality & Arts Day at the Capitol to recognize the $63.2 billion impact the tourism industry has on Georgia’s economy. Representatives from the tourism industry presented Kemp with a check representing the $3.2 billion in state and local tax revenue generated by tourism-related expenditures. Kemp also unveiled the cover of the official 2019 state travel guide, which features tubing down the Chattahoochee River in Helen. The host committee’s communications team held multiple events including Super Bowl LIVE, press conferences, and the crisis communications command center. There were over 5,000 media in their roster. 6. Each of Georgia Tourism’s department directors participated in “Meet and Greet” programs in Macon (March 11), Gainesville (March 14) and Valdosta (March 27). Hundreds of tourism partners attended the events to learn about Georgia Tourism programs and services, and network with the team. 7. Georgia Tourism attended the 2019 International Inbound Travel Association (IITA) Summit in Savannah February 3-6. IITA is the national non-profit trade association representing the United States’ international inbound travel industry. IITA’s Summit is the only one-on-one appointment marketplace for inbound tour operators and U.S. Suppliers to plan travel for international visitors. Georgia Tourism co-hosted the opening night event with Visit Savannah. 8. On Feb. 25, Georgia Tourism launched its new spring campaign “An Invitation to Explore.” The new campaign features what travelers and locals love about Georgia through their own authentic, real-life experiences. Creative for the campaign appears in print, digital, social, and on outdoor billboards with new television spots. One of Georgia’s best-known bands, the B-52s lent their Grammy-nominated hit song “Roam” to accompany the new commercial. The commercial and billboard ads ran for 10 weeks, with digital appearing March 1 through the end of June. 9. On March 3, the Global Market Development team attended the Federation of Danish Motorists (FDM) Travel USA event in Copenhagen, Denmark. This is the largest B2C event in Denmark focusing on USA as a travel destination with more than 40 exhibitors and 3000+ visitors. 10. Georgia Tourism attended ITB, the world’s leading travel and trade show, March 6-10 in Berlin, Germany. The team joined our German office and met with over 55 key operators and media during the event.
