Excursion Day WEST MAUI CLASSIC Today we’re exploring the west side of Maui. There’s a good chance this is where you’re staying as the Ka’anapali resort area along with the historic Lahaina Town has made this part of the island extremely popular. But there is so much more to 1 do and see outside of the resorts. 4 A blowhole, the best breakfast, snorkeling, and 2&3 exploring Lahaina town, today is going to be good. 5 PACK Sturdy Shoes Snorkeling Gear Beach Towels Sunscreen INITIAL TRAVEL TIME RESERVATION From Ka'anapali: 26-mins SCHEDULE From Wailea: 72-mins Dinner in Lahaina. Plan to book your table 4 weeks in advance.

IN-DEPTH West Maui Classic STOP 1: NAKALELE BLOWHOLE We’re starting off today on the eastern edge of the north side of the island at Nakalele Blowhole. At this blowhole, you’ll see geyser-like eruptions as the waves crash onshore. Park in the little parking area off the side of the road and walk down to get a view of the ocean. We love taking a drive up here, but a very important word of caution: stay on the high ground. People have been killed being swept into the blowhole or when large waves knock them off the rocks, so this isn’t someplace to mess around. You can get a really good view from the top and there is no need to walk down anywhere close to the water. View it from a safe distance and then load your family back into the car to enjoy the scenic drive back. The blowhole is truly impressive during high tide. You can check tide reports here. If your trip doesn’t line up with the high tide, we have an alternative option for you. Stop 1 Alternative: Makaluapuna Point (Dragon’s Teeth) If it’s not high tide and a trip to Nakalele Blowhole isn’t in the cards, head to Makaluapuna point to take in the coastal views and see the jagged lava rocks (that look like dragon’s teeth). There’s also a prayer labyrinth that you can enjoy. Parking is in a small lot at the end of Office Road by the Ritz Carlton Kapalua. Get directions here. West Maui Classic Excursion Day
IN-DEPTH West Maui Classic STOP 2: KAPALUA CARDIO LOOP This paved hike takes you straight up the hill outside of Kapalua Village. It’s a drier hike than you’ll find on the other side of the island, but it’s a great option for an easy hike with some pretty ocean views. At the top you’ll find a duck pond. If you continue walking on the steps at the end of the pond, you’ll eventually be treated to some great ridge and valley views. STOP 3: BURGER SHACK It’s time to get some food, and we have just the spot for perfect ocean-front dining. Technically, part of the Ritz hotel the Burger Shack is a gem of a spot tucked away just next to DT Fleming Beach. Watch the surfers and swimmers while enjoying a burger, sandwich, or one of their delicious milkshakes. STOP 4: HONOLUA BAY Honolua Bay is part of a marine life conservation district, meaning there is no fishing or taking of natural resources. This bay is pristine, and if you’re visiting, work to keep it that way. Wear reef-safe sunscreen (or sun-protective clothing), and don’t leave any trash. There is no parking lot here, so you’ll need to find parking along the road and walk-in. The walk (approximately 5 minutes) is itself beautiful. Then, time to head into the water. You’re nearly guaranteed to see fish and turtles if you swim out a little bit (we have the best luck when keeping to the sides). Note that there is no real beach here, so take care walking over the slippery rocks. Don’t forget to check the Snorkel Report snorkel conditions before you head out for the day. This bay can be wonderful for snorkeling but a few times per year the surf is very large and you won’t want to get in the water. West Maui Classic Excursion Day
IN-DEPTH West Maui Classic STOP 4: LAHAINA TOWN Jump in the car and continue your way further down the west side to historic Lahaina. A former whaling village and the royal capital of Hawaii from 1820-1845, Lahaina has a lot to explore. After your time on the beach, you might be ready for a late lunch, afternoon snack, or early dinner. We recommend: Paia Fish Market: well-priced fish dishes across from the Banyan Tree Star Noodle: Asian shared plates and noodles in an open-air ocean-front location (reservations required) The Marlin Bar: Great ambiance and fantastic food and drinks just across the street from the ocean (with views!) Down the Hatch: seafood and cocktails in an open-air courtyard, often with live music Waikiki Brew Co: fun and right on Front Street, this spot is relaxed with a menu both keiki and parents will enjoy Fleetwood's: an upscale restaurant with rooftop seating and live music. (reservations required) Remember to check the Quick Hits section for more restaurant recos. Things to see while you’re here: Baldwin House: If you want time out of the sun, a stop into the Baldwin House Museum is always interesting. Breakwall: On the southern edge of the Lahaina Harbor is the surf spot known as breakwall. This is the spot to get surf lessons or just watch the surfers enjoy the waves. Banyan Tree: Covering nearly two acres, it’s the largest banyan tree in the US and the perfect place to stop while you enjoy some gelato. We love to pick up Banyan Treats Ice Cream and eat it under the Banyan Tree. And there’s a lot of shopping, art galleries, ice cream and shave ice shops. There is enough to keep you busy for an afternoon or more. West Maui Classic Excursion Day

IN-DEPTH Hike & Fly STOP 1: WAIHEE RIDGE TRAIL This steep, 4 mile out and back hike offers a challenging hike with spectacular views. There are multiple viewpoints where you can get a good look of the beautiful mountains, valleys, and waterfalls. This trail can be muddy, so bring proper hiking shoes and a jacket! The mountains are green and lush but often wet, so be prepared for some clouds and rain. Hiking poles are advised because it does get slippery, especially after recent rain. Expect the hike to take 2 - 2.5 hours. There are two parking lots: one near the trailhead and another a ways down the hill. Parking fills up early, sometimes before 8:30 am, so plan to get out the door quickly in the morning. If you're really not interested in this hike, this is a perfect opportunity to take windsurfing or kitesurfing lessons. Try Action Sports Maui or HST Maui. STOP 2: LUNCH AT ULA 'ULA CAFE Away from the dry side of the island, you're near some of Maui's best farms. Treat yourself to food directly from an organic farm at Ula 'Ula Cafe. This food truck offers a range of food, including acai bowls, fish, beef, smoothies, and burgers, all at reasonable prices. The setting is pretty wonderful as well. Over here you do feel away from it all on Maui. Alternative lunch options include: Takamiya Market for Hawaiian plate lunch, poke, and bento boxes Farmacy Health Bar in Wailuku for vegan fare Central Maui Hike & Fly
IN-DEPTH Hike & Fly STOP 3: EXPLORE WAILUKU This charming commercial town is the county seat of Maui and worth a stop. Here you'll find off-the-beaten-path mom and pop stores and restaurants. STOP 4: MAUI ZIPLINE COMPANY Driving back towards the leeward side of Maui, you'll make a stop at Maui Tropical Plantation for ziplining. This zipline company is located in a beautiful setting and has double ziplines so you can head up with a friend. The lines are fast and you'll learn a little about the local flora and fauna that are part of the botanical garden located here. Also on site is Kumu Farms, a great farm stand selling locally grown produce and other goods. From here, you can either grab dinner at Cafe O'Lei on-site or you can pick a restaurant near your accommodations from the quick hits section of this guide. Central Maui Hike & Fly
NORTH MAUI WATERFALL
NORTH SHORE Waterfall Let’s head to north Maui where you’ll notice that the landscape (and weather) changes. It’s slightly cooler, slightly windier, and the ocean is slightly rougher. But there is a lot to do and see that will make a drive to this side of the island worth it. 1 2 4 3 PACK A light jacket Cash for lunch Sense of adventure INITIAL DRIVE TIME RESERVATION From Ka'anapali: 50-mins SCHEDULE From Wailea: 30-mins If you plan to go to Mama's Fish House, make reservations at least 2 months in advance.

IN-DEPTH North Shore Waterfall STOP 1: BREAKFAST IN PAIA Head to the charming surfer town of Paia for breakfast or beach snacks. This town is full of great restaurants and cafes and plenty of stores for you to come back and check out later. For breakfast, try: Paia Bowls for great Acai bowls, toast, and bulletproof coffee Paia Bay Coffee for a larger breakfast selection If you want to pick up snacks for the beach, check out Mana Foods for great options as well as a hot bar and bakery. STOP 2: BALDWIN BEACH This beautiful white sand beach is one of our favorites on the north shore. The landscape and beaches are different from what you'll find on the west and south sides of Maui. The waves can be rough here, especially during the winter, but there are protected coves for swimming on the east and west ends. Note: the north shore is the spot for windsurfing on Maui, so if you want to try your hand at it with a lesson, skip stop 1 and stop 2 for today and book a lesson with HST Maui. STOP 3: LUNCH AND KOMBUCHA IN HAIKU Haiku is a little off the beaten path for visitors, but it offers so much — great restaurants, shopping, and lush vegetation. Today you’ll take a short drive up the hill and head to Colleens for lunch. Here you’ll find great food and good prices. After lunch, head over to Maui Kombucha. Here you’ll find locally made Kombucha, sparkling coconut water, and more served in a fun and friendly environment. Drink your kombucha here or take a jar to go (or both). North Shore Waterfall
IN-DEPTH North Shore Waterfall STOP 4: TWIN FALLS AND THE FARM STAND This is usually stop number 1 on the Road to Hana, but we love doing it separately because you can take your time, rather than feeling rushed like you may if you’re starting the long trip to Hana. We also love to include this here because you’ll get to see (and swim in!) a great waterfall even if you don’t make the long Hana journey. Twin Falls is located on private land, which the owners generously maintain and allow public access to. Our two favorite stops are this first waterfall, which is generally less crowded. And the second picture-perfect waterfall. Note, this waterfall is located after a sign that says it’s an advanced trail. We haven’t had trouble with the terrain, but judge the journey for yourself. You can always turn back if it’s too much! Don’t forget to treat yourself with a stop at the farm stand. Everything we’ve tried is great, but our two family favorites are the banana bread and the pineapple smoothie. Caution: Read signs along the way. After periods of heavy rainfall, there can be flash floods, high water, or washed-out trails. If the trail is closed due to unsafe conditions, heed that warning. You may also be tempted to jump into some of the waterfall pools (we are!). Scout it out first and make sure you are jumping in at a safe point. Respect the rules here: don’t pick fruit, stay on the trails, respect the land, and don’t leave anything behind. When you're there at the waterfall, take a moment to look around and marvel at where you are. This is truly a special place. North Shore Waterfall
IN-DEPTH North Shore Waterfall STOP 5: SUNSET AT HO'OKIPA This beach is popular with both sea turtles and the local surfers. Spend some time here seeing more turtles and watching the surfers in the waves at one of the most famous windsurfing spots in the world. And if you’re really enjoying your time here, stick around for sunset. Watching it fade away over Haleakala is a sight to see. STOP 5: DINNER IN PAIA Back to Paia for a great dinner at Cafe des Amis. Enjoy crepes and curry on their outdoor patio, where they often have live music. And if you decide to skip sunset on Ho'okipa beach, you can make it in time for the Cafe des Amis happy hour, which runs from 4-6pm. We should also note that the most famous restaurant on Maui is located in Paia: Mama's Fish House. This restaurant is very good, but very expensive. Depending on your enthusiasm for a fine seafood restaurant, located in a superb setting, you might want to try to get a reservation. Dinner reservations book up well in advance, so try to book at least two to three months in advance, if not more. And if you can't get a reservation and you really want one, call the restaurant and see if there's a possibility of being squeezed in. North Shore Waterfall
HALEAKALA SUNSET OR SUNRISE
HALEAKALA VOLCANO Sunrise or Sunset If you’re up for the drive — and it is a drive — heading up to the top of Haleakala is well worth the trip. Take in the stunning view from the top of this volcano. Sunrise is a popular experience here. (reservations required). If you aren’t into a 3 am wake-up time on vacation, sunset is also a great time to go. 1-3 PACK 4 Warm clothes Sunscreen Food & water Sturdy shoes INITIAL DRIVE TIME RESERVATION From Ka'anapali: 2 hours SCHEDULE From Wailea: 1 hour, 40 min Sunrise reservations can be made 60 days in advance. Additional tickets are released 2 days before the day.

IN-DEPTH Haleakala Sunrise STOP 1: HALEAKALA SUMMIT FOR SUNRISE OR SUNSET You’re up early and there’s no stopping. It’s a race between you and sunrise, so it’s time to get to the park before the sun starts breaking through the clouds. Head to the summit visitor's center, summit building, or Red Hill observatory to watch the sunrise. Don’t stop at the first visitor center, which is only at 7,000 feet elevation. You'll want to head up to 10,000 feet for this. Try to get to the summit at least 30 minutes before sunrise. It’s an early day, but it would be a shame to wake up this early to only just miss the sun breaking over the clouds. And if you get there early enough, you can enjoy some amazing stargazing (weather permitting). Before you decide on the sunrise, there are a couple of things to know: (1) You need a reservation to get in. And these can be hard to come by. They are released 60 days in advance at 7 am HST and book up quickly. So set your alarm. A few remaining additional tickets are released 2 days in advance. If you can't get a reservation and absolutely want to go for sunrise, check our favorite tour section for a sunrise tour option. Book a reservation here. (2) The weather can be unpredictable. There is a chance you'll wake up at 2:30 am and drive up just to have it covered in clouds. It's a bummer, but it does happen. If you go up to Haleakala at any time, be sure to bring warm clothes. It is COLD. Jackets, long pants, hats, and gloves are necessary, especially for sunrise or sunset. This is a curvy and steep drive without streetlights, so use caution and go slowly up the hill. If you're worried about the drive in the dark, a tour may be the way to go. You can check the weather at this link. Haleakala Sunrise
IN-DEPTH Haleakala Sunrise STOP 2: PA KA'OAO TRAIL (WHITE HILL TRAIL) Another spectacular stop is the Pa Ka'oao trail or White Hill trail. If you were at Red Hill for the sunrise, you'll head down the hill a little to the summit visitor's center. From there, you'll see signs directing you on the short, 0.4-mile walk. Yes, this walk is short, but it has spectacular views. It's not to be missed. STOP 3: SLIDING SANDS TRAIL For more of a challenge and beautiful scenery, try Keonehe‘ehe‘e (Sliding Sands) Trail. To do the full trail, you’ll need all day (11 miles). But it’s an out-and- back trail, so you can simply turn around when you’ve seen enough. You can shorten it to one mile in and still see a lot. Remember that the difficulty will increase significantly on the way out as you’re hiking back up the crater at 10,000 feet elevation. STOP 4: LUNCH By now you’ve no doubt worked up an appetite. Luckily, there are some great options just down the hill that you can enjoy. Option 1 Grandma’s Coffee House: Local vibes and a cozy cafe await, along with some seriously good breakfast food. Omelets, eggs benedict, pastries, and coffee are waiting. It closes at 2 pm, so head there straight from Haleakala. Option 2 Kula Bistro: Big portions, great food, and friendly service. This is one of our favorite stops whenever we visit upcountry. Note: they are not open for breakfast on Monday mornings. Google Maps directions Option 3 Nui's Farm Food Truck: Our new favorite stop, this Thai food truck is delicious and uses produce from the 40 acre farm located behind the truck. Grab your Thai food and then pick up some produce from the farm to enjoy later. Haleakala Sunrise

Tip: If sunset isn't great or you want to Tip: stay after the sun sets for the best experience it again during the day, stargazing on Maui. your ticket into the park is good for 3 days Haleakala Sunset
IN-DEPTH Haleakala Sunset STOP 1: KULA BISTRO After a long drive up the mountain, stop for some refreshments at Kula Bistro. There’s a wide variety of options to choose from at this laid-back spot. From the lunch/dinner menu, their coconut shrimp appetizer and bruschetta with scallops are our favorites. If you make it for breakfast, having a loco moco is a true Hawaii experience. It’s also BYO, so if you’d like to bring beverages, there's a grocery store located conveniently across the street. . STOP 2: SLIDING SANDS TRAIL If you want to spend most of the day in Haleakala National Park, try the Keonehe‘ehe‘e (Sliding Sands) Trail. To do the full trail, you’ll need most of the day (11 miles). But it’s an out-and-back trail, so you can simply turn around when you’ve seen enough. Remember that the difficulty will increase significantly on the way out as you’re hiking back up the crater at 10,000 feet elevation. Bring plenty of water, food, good shoes, and a jacket. STOP 3: PA KA'OAO TRAIL You've just finished hiking Sliding Sands and probably can't imagine hiking more, but just one more thing: a short hike with stunning views. Head out on the Pa ka’oao Trail (White Hill Trail). It’s a short, 0.5 mile trail that will give you some great views and some amazing photos for your memories. Haleakala Sunset
IN-DEPTH Haleakala Sunset STOP 4: HEALEAKALA SUMMIT AREA Once you're done hiking, it's time to find a spot to watch the sunset. Find any location in the summit area facing west. Red Hill is a popular spot. If there are too many people and you'd like something a little more secluded, we've had luck heading down the hill and looking for turnoffs with great views. We were able to skip the crowds and still have a very special experience. Since you’re here already, stay a while longer and spend some time stargazing. This is a real treat, especially if you live in a city and don’t get out to see the stars often. We like to use an app to help us identify what we’re looking at. Try Skyview Lite. And if you are really into astronomy, there is a stargazing tour that you can take. It’s a full sunset and stargazing tour with a telescope so you can really understand what you’re looking at. The tour isn’t cheap ($225 per adult), but it’s a small group tour. If stargazing with a telescope and a professional guide is high on your list, it may be well worth the cost. Book the tour here. Keep your ticket to Haleakala as it's good for 3 days (including the day of purchase). If you want to come back, you'll be able to enter without paying the reservation fee. And if you plan to do some hiking in the Kipahulu District, this ticket will get you into the park again for those hikes. Don't forget to pack warm clothes. It's cold on the top of the volcano, even in the summer. Jacket, pants, hat, and gloves are advised. Really, it's cold. And you'll be driving back down the mountain in the dark. Remember that there are no streetlights and the road is winding, so take it slow. There are cows that like to venture into the road and in the dark, they're difficult to see. You can check the weather for Haleakala at this link. Haleakala Sunset
UPCOUNTRY COWBOY
UPCOUNTRY Cowboy Day While Maui may be famous for its beaches, when you head up the mountain you're in for a treat. Get ready to explore the beautiful landscape with the best stops. And enjoy the ride — half of the allure of upcountry is the stunning scenery that surrounds you as you drive. Yes, you're really still on Maui. A note on timing: right now upcountry attractions are limiting their days and hours. IN-DEPTH Upcountry Cowboy STOP 1: MAKAWAO Head to Komoda Bakery in Makawao and get your fill of stick donuts, cream puffs, and guava malasadas (yes please!). Be sure to arrive early and bring cash for the delicious baked goods. Makawao is one of our favorite towns on Maui and is an old Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) town. If you’re not into donuts or looking for something a bit more caffeinated, head to Cowgirl Coffee Maui. You’ll probably be in town before all of the cute shops and boutiques open, so make a mental note to return on your way down the hill if anything sparks your interest. Some favorites are: Holoholo Surf, Driftwood, and Tribe Maui. STOP 2: MAKAWAO FOREST (KAHAKAPAO TRAIL) If this is your first time in Upcountry, you’ll realize now that the scenery has changed dramatically after a one-hour drive from the resorts. At just under 6 miles, this loop hike takes you through a cool and shaded forest on a well- maintained trail. It’s a pretty beautiful and usually secluded and quiet hike where you’ll see the forest, tropical plants, and breathe in that fresh Maui air. Tired of hiking? Piiholo Ranch Zipline is just down the road. This is by far our favorite zipline experience on Maui. We just love it! STOP 3: KULA COUNTRY FARMS Stretch your legs, pick up some snacks, and say hello to the horses and chickens at Kula Country Farms. This is a quick stop, but it’s a great place to pick up brands of food to take home that you might not find elsewhere (like Haleakala Creamery Caramel Sauce). Alternative: if you are venturing up on Saturday or Sunday, stop at Nui's farm for excellent produce and prices. Nui's Farm website. Upcountry Cowboy Day
IN-DEPTH Upcountry Cowboy STOP 4: ULUPALAKUA RANCH STORE Time for lunch (or a late lunch). Enjoy the beautiful drive as you continue to make your way through upcountry. For lunch, you'll head to Ulupalakua Ranch Store, a surprising but excellent stop. They serve highly-rated burgers made from local meat, with prices that are pretty fair for Maui. The beef or elk burgers top the list of favorite dishes. It's only open until 3, so don't arrive too late. STOP 5: MAUI WINE While Maui isn’t exactly a famous wine country, Maui Wine is a fun experience with a scenic vineyard, large lawns (and lawn games), and pineapple wine. It's a great place to take in the scenery and enjoy how special and unique upcountry really is. Reservations are required for wine tasting and they are only open Wednesday - Sunday. Upcountry Cowboy Day
UPCOUNTRY+HALEAKALA COMBO
UPCOUNTRY/HALEAKALA Combo Your time in Maui might be limited so two separate trips to see upcountry and Haleakala probably won't happen. Here you'll find the best of the best — a combo day that starts with a winding drive through upcountry and ends with a Haleakala sunset. A note on timing: right now upcountry attractions are limiting their days and hours. A trip is best done Friday - Sunday. 1 2 3 4&5 PACK Warm clothes Cash for lunch Sense of adventure Snacks or dinner INITIAL DRIVE TIME From Ka'anapali: 55-min RESERVATION From Wailea: 40 -min SCHEDULE Make your Maui Wine reservations at least 7 days in advance
OVERVIEW Upcountry Cowboy STOP 1: DOWNTOWN MAKAWAO STOP 2: LUNCH AT KULA AND KOMODA BAKERY BISTRO 3674 Baldwin Ave, Makawao 4566 Lower Kula Rd, Kula Google Maps directions Google Maps directions Tip: Cash only for Komoda Reservations available for large Bakery. The good stuff sells out groups only early. Tip: The bruschetta with scallops keeps us going back again and again STOP 3: KULA COUNTRY STOP 4: PA KA'OAO TRAIL FARMS (WHITE HILL) 6240 Kula Hwy, Kula Path begins from the Summit Google Maps directions Visitor's Center parking lot Tip: pick up some of the Haleakala Google Maps directions Creamery items in the shop. Cost: $30 entrance fee Tip: Make sure your car is full of gas before you head out. There are no service stations in the park. STOP 5: HALEAKALA SUMMIT AREA Find any unobstructed view facing west and settle in to watch a spectacular sunset. Tip: stay after the sun sets for the best stargazing on Maui. Upcountry Cowboy Day
IN-DEPTH Upcountry/Haleakala STOP 1: MAKAWAO TOWN & KOMODA BAKERY Head to Komoda Bakery in Makawao and get your fill of stick donuts, cream puffs, and guava malasadas (yes please!). Be sure to arrive early and bring cash for the delicious baked goods. Makawao is one of our favorite towns on Maui and is an old Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) town. If you’re not into donuts or looking for something a bit more caffeinated, head to Cowgirl Coffee. There's no food on the top of Haleakala and you'll be up there for a while. Stop by the Foodland in Pukalani to pick up snacks or dinner to have while you're stargazing after sunset. STOP 2: KULA BISTRO This is probably your biggest meal of the day, so make it good. Head to Kula Bistro. There’s a wide variety of options to choose from at this laid-back spot. Their coconut shrimp appetizer and bruschetta with scallops are our favorites. It’s also BYO, so if you’d like to bring beverages, there's a grocery store located conveniently across the street. Upcountry/Haleakala Combo
IN-DEPTH Upcountry/Haleakala STOP 3: KULA COUNTRY FARMS Stretch your legs, pick up some snacks, and say hello to the horses and chickens at Kula Country Farms. This is a quick stop, but it’s a great place to pick up brands of food to take home that you might not find elsewhere (like Haleakala Creamery Caramel Sauce). STOP 4: PA KA'OAO TRAIL Plan to arrive at Haleakala at least an hour before sunset or longer if you plan on hiking and taking in the view. There’s a lot to see and the last thing you want is to be rushed (and miss the sunset). If you plan to hike, we have two recommendations. If you're short on time, do the Pa Ka’oao Trail (White Hill Trail). This half-mile trail is a must. It’s a short, 0.5 mile trail that will give you some great views. We also highly recommend doing the Sliding Sands trail. To do the entire trial, it would take most of the day. But it's an out and back trail, so you can choose your distance here. Doing a mile will give you a great view and you can experience a little more of the park. But remember, hiking out will take longer than hiking down, so leave plenty of time to make it back out for sunset. Upcountry/Haleakala Combo
IN-DEPTH Upcountry/Haleakala STOP 4: HEALEAKALA SUMMIT AREA Once you're done hiking, it's time to find a spot to watch the sunset. Upcountry/Haleakala Combo
SOUTH MAUI BEACH DAY
SOUTH MAUI Beach Day South Maui is known for its beautiful beaches, numerous snorkeling spots, expansive lava fields, and upscale resorts. Your agenda today consists of great food, a hike, and some snorkeling. PACK 1 5 Sunscreen Sun-protective clothing Lots of water 3&4 Sturdy shoes 2 INITIAL DRIVE TIME From Ka'anapali: 37-min RESERVATION From Wailea: 15-min SCHEDULE None needed unless you're doing the alternative activities (redline rafting)
OVERVIEW South Maui Beach Day STOP 2: KING'S HIGHWAY STOP 1: KIHEI CAFFE (HOAPILI TRAIL) 1945 S Kihei Rd, Kihei Google Maps directions Google Maps directions The road ends near La Perouse Bay Good, fast, filling, casual breakfast where you'll find parking. Tip: Bring a lot of water and good shoes STOP 3: LUNCH STOP 4: MAKENA BEACH (BIG BEACH) We have a few different options in the Google Maps directions long description. Find one that works 3 parking lots for you! Entrance fee and parking fee required for non-Hawaii residents $10 per vehicle for parking $5 per person for entry STOP 5: DINNER AT COCONUTS FISH CAFE 1279 S Kihei Rd, Kihei Google Maps directions There are two locations, but we like this one the best. South Maui Beach Day
IN-DEPTH South Maui Beach Day STOP 1: KIHEI CAFFE Get a full breakfast at a good price at Kihei Caffe. The location is low-key with you ordering inside before taking a seat. Food is usually fast, though there can be a line to order if you don't get there early enough. Mac-nut pancakes with coconut syrup...so good. STOP 2: KINGS HIGHWAY (HOAPILI TRAIL) Hiking on Maui is challenging because it is HOT. This hike is no different. You're hiking along the coast on a lava field (good shoes a must) and during the day it can be unbearably hot. Head here straight from breakfast. You'll find a parking lot near La Perouse Bay when the road dead ends and the trailhead starts shortly after that. There are a few different routes you can take. We recommend splitting off and heading to Hanomanioa Light rather than continuing to Kanaio Beach. Alternative: Backside of Molokini with Redline Rafting If you're not up for a hike, there's a pretty fantastic rafting trip that leaves from Kihei and takes you to the backside of Molokini. Molokini Crater is one of the most popular snorkeling spots on Maui, with excellent visibility and great sea life. The backside of Molokini offers a less crowded experience and even more fish. When conditions are right, the raft speeds out to the backside, so you can experience the beauty. If they can't make it out to Molokini, fear not: they will take you to the best snorkeling spots in the area. South Maui Beach Day
IN-DEPTH South Maui Beach Day STOP 3: LUNCH IN WAILEA Lunch down in this area is tough. There are some food trucks, the most famous of which is Jawz. It's a fine food truck, though we wouldn't give it rave reviews. If you don't want to do Jawz, you can either drive back to Wailea or Kihei or bring your own lunch. We often stop at The Market Maui and grab sandwiches to have later at the beach. If you're picking up food from The Market Maui, be sure to call ahead. It can take 15 minutes to get your to-go order (which can feel like forever when you're on your way somewhere) . STOP 4: MAKENA BEACH Possibly one of the most beautiful beaches on Maui, Makena Beach offers sprawling soft sand and crystal blue water. We love a solid beach day at Makena. Bring your umbrella and beach chairs to make a day of it. One thing to note is there can often be dangerous shore breaks. Take caution when you enter the water and follow safety best practices (some include if in doubt, don't go out and never turn your back to the ocean). Parking is expensive, but this is one of the easier beaches to find parking. There are 3 lots. If you'd rather not pay for parking, head to Maluaka Beach. Almost as beautiful but with free parking and a less dangerous shore break. Plus, showers and restrooms! It's really a winner. South Maui Beach Day
IN-DEPTH South Maui Beach Day STOP 5: DINNER AT COCONUTS This semi-famous casual fish restaurant serves up delicious food that even our picky eater enjoys. Here you'll find fish tacos, fish platters, fish and chips, and more. We go back again and again for the fish tacos. Need a different dinner recommendation? Head to the quick hits section and check out our favorite restaurants in South Maui. South Maui Beach Day
LANAI DAY TRIP
LANAI Day Trip We are headed on a full day trip to the island of Lanai. Located 9 miles from Maui, Lanai feels like a world away. It's rugged, quiet (with only 3,000 inhabitants), and has amazing snorkeling. 1 PACK Sunscreen Sun-protective clothing Plenty of snacks and water Towels RESERVATION Snorkel gear BOAT RIDE SCHEDULE Less than an hour from Ferry tickets must be booked Lahaina in advance. Book early to get the departure times and date you'd like. Any rental car or activities must be booked in advance.
OVERVIEW Lanai Day Trip STOP 1: EXPEDITIONS FERRY STOP 2: SNORKELING AT HULOPOE BAY Lahaina Harbor Google Maps directions Google Maps directions Tip: grab a picnic table in the shade if Ferry Schedule you plan on making it a full beach day Tip: head out early. Trust us! STOP 3: LANA'I CITY LUNCH We have a few different options in the long description. Find one that works for you! South Maui Beach Day
IN-DEPTH South Maui Beach Day STOP 1: EXPEDITIONS FERRY Head out early on your ferry ride to Lanai. Trust us on this one. Not only is it easier to find parking in Lahaina when you leave early, but you won't risk feeling like you've run out of time on Lanai. When booking your ticket, you'll need to call Expeditions Ferry. Currently, they're not taking online reservations (the online booking calendar will look sold out for months, so just call!). The ferry ride is under an hour and it will take you from Lahaina harbor to Manele Harbor on Lanai. The ferry is pretty basic, so bring your own food and drink if you'd like. There's also room for bags so if you're planning to bring a cooler, big beach bags, etc, there is some space to store it. Once you land on Lanai, it's time to take the 5-10 minute walk to the beach. Booking tip: if you're not sure how long you want to stay on Lanai and want to keep your options open, book a ticket on the last ferry of the day. As we were deciding between two return times, the reservation person suggested we book the last ferry of the day. She said that the last ferry is usually sold out. If we wanted to leave earlier, we had a better chance of finding space on an earlier ferry than the opposite (if we decided to stay longer and were trying to find last-minute space on the last ferry of the day). I'm sure this strategy doesn't always work, but we were happy to have booked the final ferry of the day to experience as much as possible. South Maui Beach Day
IN-DEPTH South Maui Beach Day STOP 2: HULOPOE BAY This is where we suggest you spend the majority of your day. Trust us. We usually spend 1-2 hours max at a beach, but we spent 6 hours here and had to tear ourselves away. When you get to the beach, try to stake out a picnic table in the shade as your home base. Once you're settled, there are a few things to do: Snorkel! This is some of the best snorkeling we've experienced in Hawaii. Take a buddy, grab your equipment and head out. Watch for dolphins: This bay is popular with spinner dolphins, so watch for them. You might be treated to a show. Tide pools: if snorkeling isn't your thing or you want an easier way to see some small fish, check out the tide pools (on the left side of the beach). Also, an excellent place for kids to swim. Walk to Puu Pehe (sweetheart rock): Continue past the tide pools and walk to Sweetheart Rock for some beautiful views. Be careful — it's a steep cliff with no rails. Visit the Four Seasons: A beautiful Four Seasons hotel is perched above Hulopoe Bay. You can head up there to enjoy a fancy lunch, brunch, or cocktails. South Maui Beach Day
IN-DEPTH South Maui Beach Day STOP 3: LANA'I CITY If you want to see a little more of the island on your short day trip, you can grab a taxi into Lanai City. It's a very small town, with most of the restaurants and shops centrally located around Dole Park. We used Rabaca's Limousine and Taxi Service. They drive a 9 passenger van and you might be sharing with other ferry passengers, depending on how busy they are. The ride was $10 per person each way between Lanai City and either the harbor or Hulopoe Bay. The trip time is approximately 20 minutes each way. Once in Lana'i City you can explore some shops and grab some food. Some restaurant options include: Blue Ginger Cafe: a bakery and made to order cafe with delicious food. Open for dinner some nights. Pele's Other Garden Deli: mainly sandwiches and pizza with a bar and outdoor seating area. Richard's Market: a great selection of grocery items, deli, beer and wine ALTERNATIVES If you're not interested in a beach day, there are other options you can enjoy on the island. You can either rent a car or hire a tour guide for the day. Expeditions Ferry has tour operators they trust and recommend listed on their website. We've heard stories of rental cars not being available when booked through unvetted sources, so we recommend calling Expeditions Ferry to inquire about any bookings you want to make from their site. Other activities on the island include: horseback riding, archery, a tour to Garden of the Gods and Shipwreck Beach. South Maui Beach Day
ROAD TO HANA TOP STOPS
ROAD TO HANA Top Stops This is another example of a trip that is about the journey, not the destination. The Road to Hana is a winding drive with 620 curves and 59 bridges that will take you past waterfalls, fruit stands, and black sand beaches. 1 2 4 3 5 6 PACK 7 Sunscreen Sun-protective clothing 8 Sturdy shoes Food and water INITIAL DRIVE TIME From Ka'anapali: 75 min From Wailea: 1 hour RESERVATION SCHEDULE Reservations are needed to park or enter Wainapanapa State Park
IN-DEPTH Road to Hana Top Stops This is a big trip and a full day (or two). We highly recommend taking your time and considering staying a night in Hana. And if you’re driving it yourself instead of doing a tour, download the Shaka app (and the Road to Hana route) before you set off. This app will walk you step by step through different stops on your journey as well as get you some historical information and interesting facts. Rather than giving you an itinerary for this great trip, we’re giving you our favorite stops, favorite restaurants, tips, and some ideas for staying the night. Take your time, explore, and enjoy the drive. Road to Hana tips: If you're doing the Road to Hana in one day, leave as early as you can. Plan on the trip taking you at least 9 hours roundtrip. It'll be more like 12 hours if you really want to see a lot of things. Pack snacks. There are a number of roadside stops, but some of the best for a real meal aren't until you reach Hana. So pack plenty of snacks and water to last you until you reach Hana. Mana Foods is a great place to pick up last minute snacks in Paia! Yield to oncoming traffic and pull over for locals. The drive is scenic but can be challenging, so pay attention and be a courteous driver. Fill up before starting the journey. You can get gas and snacks in Paia or Kahului. There aren't any gas stations until you reach Hana, so make sure you have a full tank! Consider staying overnight. There is a lot to see and the trip is much more enjoyable if you can slow down. Don't jump just because everyone else is! There is a lot of waterfall jumping and walking up streambeds that happen on this road. But that doesn't mean it's safe. Use your judgment and keep yourself safe. Waterflow can be unpredictable there and flash floods aren't uncommon. There are sad stories every year of hikers or swimmers being swept out into the ocean or lost. Be smart, pay attention to signs, and keep yourself safe. Road to Hana Top Stops
IN-DEPTH Road to Hana Top Stops OUR FAVORITE STOPS There are too many beautiful things to count on this journey. If you see something interesting, stop! There are so many waterfalls that you can see from the road and a quick stop is sometimes all that you need. STOP 1: TWIN FALLS Google Maps directions If you didn’t do the North Maui itinerary and you skipped Twin Falls, make time to stop here today. Swim in the swimming hole, hike to the falls, and buy some banana bread (more info included as part of the North Maui itinerary). Honestly, we like this waterfall but there's so much to see on the Road to Hana that this waterfall is better done another day (if you can!). That's why we include it in our North Shore itinerary day. STOP 2: WAIKAMOI WATERFALLS Google Maps directions This is a two-for-one stop for waterfalls. The first fall is easily accessed just a short step from the road. And there's a beautiful pond that many people will jump in. We love this because it's easily accessible and you can enjoy a waterfall while continuing on your journey. There is a second fall, which requires hiking up a stream bed. This second fall is larger and less visited (because of the hike). But take caution: east Maui is prone to rain, flash flooding, and hazardous conditions. We don't venture up to the second falls for this reason: it's just not worth it. Road to Hana Top Stops
IN-DEPTH Road to Hana Top Stops STOP 3: KE'ANAE PENINSULA AND AUNTY SANDY'S Google Maps directions This is a quick turn off the road to Hana where you’ll get the famous Aunty Sandy’s banana bread. And yes, the bread lives up to the hype. Buy a loaf to eat immediately and a loaf to take with you on the journey. Driving down the Ke'anae Peninsula, you’ll also pass a small church built in 1856 and you’ll be treated to a beautiful beach and volcanic coastline. This isn’t a great place to swim though, so enjoy your banana bread with the view and head back to the car. STOP 4: PUA'A KA'A STATE WAYSIDE PARK Google Maps directions Waterfalls, swimming holes, picnic tables, and restrooms make this a delightful stop on your journey. No hiking necessary — just a quick walk and you're amongst the waterfalls and taking a quick dip in two swimming holes. Because it's so easily accessible, there can sometimes be quite a crowd. If it's too crowded for you, take a quick dip and move on — there's still more to see. Road to Hana Top Stops
IN-DEPTH Road to Hana Top Stops STOP 5: WAIʻĀNAPANAPA STATE PARK Google Maps directions Black sand beach enthusiasts, this is your stop. The beach, glistening water, and shoreline are just stunning. But there's more than that here. You'll also find sea arches, caves, a blowhole, walking trails, and more. This is a must-see stop. And if you're really ambitious, book a camping spot or a cabin and stay the night. Waking up here is worth it. You'll need to make reservations to visit the park before you go. Visit https://www.gowaianapanapa.com/ for reservations. STOP 6: HAMOA BEACH Google Maps directions If waterfall swims aren't your thing and you're eager to jump in the water at the end of your journey, Hamoa Beach is a great stop. With stunning blue water and surf, this beach is really popular. Take caution, the shore break can be intense so it's not the easiest place for a relaxing swim. You'll also find a beach shower here, which might be a welcome sight after your long drive. Road to Hana Top Stops
IN-DEPTH Road to Hana Top Stops STOP 7: WAILUA FALLS Google Maps directions A quick stop past mile marker 45, this waterfall is impressive. There's a small parking lot off the side of the road. STOP 8: PIPIWAI TRAIL Google Maps directions This is a pretty fantastic hike, but it's well past Hana. Another drawback? It's part of Haleakala National Park, so you'll need to pay a parking entrance fee of $30. The ticket is good for 3 days though, so you could tie this in with another trip to Haleakala. All that said, it's a great hike. You'll hike past a number of different waterfalls, through a bamboo forest, and then up to a final, large waterfall. This is a very well discovered trail so you won't have it to yourself, especially if you're there later in the day. This is usually something we recommend when you're spending a night in Hana. If you want to fit this into a day trip, you might consider waking up very early, making this your first stop on the Road to Hana, and working your way back through the other stops on your way back to Paia.
