COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Stephanie Walters, Tuesday, October 16th • Color Me Happy Executive Director & Arts & Crafts Studio 3:00 pm Reghan Giannelli Pumpkin painting is a holiday tradition that people of all ages have been partaking in for decades. We all know that painting pumpkins does not require rocket science. You buy the pumpkin, choose the paint, and start painting. But have you ever wondered why you chose the colors that you did? Why did you pick blue over red or yellow over purple? Researchers believe that color is a powerful communication tool and can be used to influence mood, and even influence behaviors. Stephanie found this topic to be extremely fascinating, so she did a little research. She has brought to our attention, that this theory is actually referred to as “color psychology”. We don’t always notice, but we make “color” decisions every single day. What colored shirt am I going to wear today? What color nail polish should I use? What color car should I buy? Color is all around us, and without even knowing it, it defines us in ways that words can’t. For her Watermark University class, Stephanie will not only help you paint pumpkins, but she will also enlighten us on the power of color and what each color of the rainbow represents. COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Fashion Through the Second Thursday of the Chermeine Conteh Activity Studio Decades Month • 4:15 pm Think back to a special event that you attended years ago. Whether it be your senior prom, wedding, picnic or graduation, do you remember what you wore? How did you do your hair ? What shoes were you wearing? I think for most of us, especially the women, we can all agree that fashion certainly does change over time. For instance, in the 20's, women began flaunting their legs in short flapper dresses. In the 40's, men wore big, plaid, and loose suits. In the 60's, men grew their hair out and the women flaunted what was called the beehive hairstyle. The 80's went through a HUGE fashion alteration - big hair, lots of hairspray, tight spandex, bright patterns and mini skirts. Come to Chermeine's class every month to learn more about each decades fashion trends, and then reminisce about your favorite outfits throughout the years. If you are brave enough, feel free to bring pictures to show off your oh so fabulous wardrobe. It is the “I Have a Little Dreidel” song, sung by millions of Jewish children around the world during the Hanukkah season. Based on legend, during the time of the Maccabees, when Jewish children were forbidden from studying Torah, they would defy the decree and study anyway by playing with a clay dreidel. When a Greek official would come close they would put away their books and take out spinning tops, claiming they were just playing games. Both Lori and Rebecca grew up in Jewish households, and they played dreidel every year with family and friends. They would like to introduce the origins of the dreidel to all of you this December. Not only will you learn different Hanukkah traditions, but you can also make your own clay dreidel after their discussion.

Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza are right around the corner. So, when you think about winter's festive holidays, what do you envision? Unfortunately, that is not the case for many families in our great nation. Many families struggle to even put breakfast on the table. All children deserve the opportunity to thrive in life, make something of themselves, and share their talents with the rest of the world. Watermark tries to make that magic happen. That is why we have created "Watermark for Kids". Visandra, one of our chefs, is going to teach us how to make empanadas, a South American delicacy. Empanadas are stuffed pastries typically filled with beef and chicken. Other popular fillings are: ham and cheese, potatoes, chile peppers, vegetables, seafood, hearts of palm, tropical fruits; really whatever is available and popular in that particular region. It is going to be a great cultural experience, and Visandra is very excited to bring a part of her families culture to you!!
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Wednesday, October Fall Foliage Fanatics Chandra Sanchara Living Room 24th • 11:00 am One incredible benefit of living in the northeast is the changing of seasons. As New Yorkers, we are blessed with four full seasons- winter, spring, summer and autumn. One of our dear residents, Marie Hoffman loves the outdoors. Marie was an active woman in her day, and still is. Every chance she gets, Marie is outside feeding the birds or tending to Claudette's (Food Service Director) garden. As much as she loves summer, she is thrilled that fall is finally here. Her favorite part of autumn is the changing of the leaves. Looking around our community, you will notice that we have a variety of trees, all unique in their own special way. Marie and Chandra are running a class on the changing of the autumn leaves. They will collect a number of fallen leaves from our courtyard, all different colors, shapes, and sizes. We will analyze each leaf and later discuss which tree they came from. Even if your not a fan of autumn, you should still join in on the fun! Who knows, you may become a fan and fall in love with fall! COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Fashion Through the Second Tuesday of the Chermeine Conteh Living Room Decades month • 11:45 am Think back to a special event that you attended years ago. September- Popular Hair-Do's October- Wedding Dress Trends November- Trendy Men's Suits December- Most Popular Clothing Stores
