Art is a form of expression from one person to the many. It is a way to communicate ideas and transcend
the boundaries of language and time. We might not be the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but we do talk a
lot about artists who have left lasting impressions on the world. Every third Tuesday of the month we have
a discussion and show mini clips of a famous artist and one of their famous pieces of art. Art has no
boundaries, therefore you never know what you might learn coming to one of Chermeine's classes.

September 3rd- "Female Artists in Paris, 1850-1900"
Highlights from the exhibition “Women Artists in Paris, 1850-1900” on view at the Clark Art Institute in
Williamstown, MA, from June 9-September 3. This slide lecture will discuss well-known women artists
Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, and Rosa Bonheur, and lesser-known women artists Marie Bracquemond,
Eva Gonzalés, Paula Modersohn-Becker and many more who dared to study art professionally at the end
of the nineteenth century.

October 1st- "Henri Matisse"
This lecture focuses on the great French painter, sculpture, and designer Henri Matisse (1869-1954), King
of the Fauves and great master of color. We will follow his influential career from his student days to his
last brilliant collages.

November 5th - "Amedeo Modigliani and the School of Paris"
This lecture presents the Italian modernist Amedeo Modigliani’s distinctive paintings, known for their long
necks and almond-shaped eyes. We will also discuss his circle of artist friends, also immigrants to Paris,
who were seeking great success in the City of Lights: Marc Chagall, Chaim Soutine, Jules Pascin and Chana
Orloff. They became the “School of Paris.”

December 3rd- "Dada and Surrealism"
While the colorful School of Paris thrived, the absurdist movement Dada emerged during World War I
(1914-1918). It was an anti-art, eager to “break all the rules.” Surrealism followed in the 1920s, absorbing
most of the Dada artists. They continued to explore the boundaries of art-making and subjects with the
help of Freud’s theories.

Autumn is full of so many distinct and wonderful scents. Cinnamon, apple, nutmeg, pumpkin etc. This fall,
we are going to learn how to infuse those scents into a potpourri puff. And what is potpourri you may ask?
It is a mixture of spices and dried flowers that are typically kept in a decorative bowl and used to perfume
a room. Instead of a bowl, we will use decorative organza drawstring bags. Once completed, you can hang
them anywhere in your apartment to keep the scent of fall alive and well.

On October 4, people all over the world will be celebrating the feast day of the Patron Saint of Animals,
Saint Francis of Assisi. It’s customary that in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures,
animals are led to churches for a special ceremony called the “Blessing of the Animals.” (peta.org) Every
year, millions of animals are blessed by priests in a ceremony that touches the hearts of passionate animal
lovers all over the world. On Thursday, October 3rd, come to Reghan's class to learn more about this
blessed holiday. In order for this class to work, she needs you to bring pictures or memorabilia of your own
pets ...dogs, cats, birds, bunnies, hamsters, spiders, lizards, even worms- all are accepted. Following this
class, Bill Humphreys, a Eucharistic Minister from Immaculate Conception Parish, will recite the "Blessing
of the Animals" over all of our pictures/memorabilia. If you are a true animal lover, this is one afternoon
that you will not want to miss.

In Caribbean homes, a sorrel drink at Christmas is like pumpkin pie to Americans at Thanksgiving. The
seasonal plant produces a refreshing drink that is a favorite during the Christmas season. Like many
popular plants grown in the Caribbean region, sorrel has its origins in West Africa. Gradually the beloved
plant made its way to Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Guyana, St. Lucia, Grenada, Montserrat, Dominica,
Antigua, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. Denese, our Human Resources/Business Director and
Jamaican native, will show us how to make her families favorite holiday beverage this December. And no,
she will not be mixing it with rum- sorry guys!

Did you know that the oldest lighthouse in the nation is only two hours away from us? The iconic Sandy
Hook Lighthouse is located right here in the Tri-state area, in ... you guessed it, Sandy Hook, New Jersey. It
has been in service since 1974, and continues to draw in tourists from all over the country. Lighthouses
truly are radiant beacons of light that not only serve as a hazard tower, but also a reassurance that safety
lies ahead. Christine, has seen her fair share of lighthouses along the east coast. Join her on Friday,
November 23rd to learn about her all time favorite "beacon of light", the Sandy Hook Lighthouse.

Pumpkin painting is a holiday tradition that people of all ages have been partaking in for decades. We all
know that painting pumpkins does not require rocket science. You buy the pumpkin, choose the paint, and
start painting. But have you ever wondered why you chose the colors that you did? Why did you pick blue
over red or yellow over purple? Researchers believe that color is a powerful communication tool and can
be used to influence mood, and even influence behaviors. Stephanie found this topic to be extremely
fascinating, so she did a little research. She has brought to our attention, that this theory is actually
referred to as “color psychology”. We don’t always notice, but we make “color” decisions every single day.
What colored shirt am I going to wear today? What color nail polish should I use? What color car should I
buy? Color is all around us, and without even knowing it, it defines us in ways that words can’t. For her
Watermark University class, Stephanie will not only help you paint pumpkins, but she will also enlighten us
on the power of color and what each color of the rainbow represents.

Cultural diversity has become very important in today's world. Our chances of interacting with people
from various races, ethnic groups and cultures is far greater now than it has ever been before. I think most
people can agree that one of the easiest ways to experience cultural diversity is through food. In October,
you are going to taste the spices and richness of South America. Visandra, one of our chefs, is going to
teach us how to make empanadas, a South American delicacy. Empanadas are stuffed pastries typically
filled with beef and chicken. Other popular fillings are: ham and cheese, potatoes, chile peppers,
vegetables, seafood, hearts of palm, tropical fruits; really whatever is available and popular in that
particular region. It is going to be a great cultural experience, and Visandra is very excited to bring a part of
her families culture to you!!

One incredible benefit of living in the northeast is the changing of seasons. As New Yorkers, we are
blessed with four full seasons- winter, spring, summer and autumn. One of our dear residents, Marie
Hoffman loves the outdoors. Marie was an active woman in her day, and still is. Every chance she gets,
Marie is outside feeding the birds or tending to Claudette's (Food Service Director) garden. As much as she
loves summer, she is thrilled that fall is finally here. Her favorite part of autumn is the changing of the
leaves. Looking around our community, you will notice that we have a variety of trees, all unique in their
own special way. Marie and Chandra are running a class on the changing of the autumn leaves. They will
collect a number of fallen leaves from our courtyard, all different colors, shapes, and sizes. We will analyze
each leaf and later discuss which tree they came from. Even if your not a fan of autumn, you should still
join in on the fun! Who knows, you may become a fan and fall in love with fall!

Think back to a special event that you attended years ago. Whether it be your senior prom, wedding,
picnic or graduation, do you remember what you wore? How did you do your hair ? What shoes were you
wearing? I think for most of us, especially the women, we can all agree that fashion certainly does change
over time. For instance, in the 20's, women began flaunting their legs in short flapper dresses. In the 40's,
men wore big, plaid, and loose suits. In the 60's, men grew their hair out and the women flaunted what
was called the beehive hairstyle. The 80's went through a HUGE fashion alteration - big hair, lots of
hairspray, tight spandex, bright patterns and mini skirts. Come to Chermeine's class every month to learn
more about each decades fashion trends, and then reminisce about your favorite outfits throughout the
years. If you are brave enough, feel free to bring pictures to show off your oh so fabulous wardrobe.

Do these lyrics sound familiar to you: “Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel- I made you out of clay - And when
you’re dry and ready - Oh Dreidel we shall play”. It is the “I Have a Little Dreidel” song, sung by millions of
Jewish children around the world during the Hanukkah season. Based on legend, during the time of
the Maccabees, when Jewish children were forbidden from studying Torah, they would defy the decree
and study anyway by playing with a clay dreidel. When a Greek official would come close they would put
away their books and take out spinning tops, claiming they were just playing games. Both Lori and Rebecca
grew up in Jewish households, and they played dreidel every year with family and friends. They would like
to introduce the origins of the dreidel to all of you this December. Not only will you learn different
Hanukkah traditions, but you can also make your own clay dreidel after their discussion.

It's that time of the year again. Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza are right around the corner. So, when
you think about winter's festive holidays, what do you envision? Do you see both parents watching their
children unwrap gifts, families playing dreidel in the living room, large turkey dinners with family and
friends? Sounds pretty accurate, right? Unfortunately, that is not the case for many families in our great
nation. Many families struggle to even put breakfast on the table. All children deserve the opportunity to
thrive in life, make something of themselves, and share their talents with the rest of the world.
Watermark tries to make that magic happen. That is why we have created "Watermark for Kids".
Watermark for Kids is a non-profit organization committed to empowering underserved kids to express
their character, leadership, creativity, compassion and spirit – to express their true selves and thrive. Nick
was so enthused about Watermark for Kids that he researched the organization and has decided to lead a
class on it. Nick's class will be on Thursday, December 13th at 11:00 am in the Activity Studio. Then, on
Friday, December 14th, Nick and the Community Life team are going to have a holiday card sale in the Arts
& Crafts Studio. All the money that is raised will go to "Watermark for Kids".

Bina Bora from Josie's International School of Dance, is an incredibly talented hula dancer who visited the
Fountains last month. She put on an amazing show using hula shirts, rods, flowers and even FIRE!!! While
performing, she explained that in ancient Hawaii, a time when a written language did not exist, hula
played an important role in keeping history, mythology and their culture alive. With each movement – a
hand gesture, step of foot, swaying of hips – a story unfolds. To Bina and native Hawaiians, hula is much
more than a dance, it is a way of life. She had such an incredible time with our crew that Bina has agreed
to do a Watermark University class this September. Instead of focusing on the dance, Bina will lead an
educational class on the history of hula.

Tuckahoe Florist has been servicing the village of Tuckahoe since 1929. Since the very beginning, it has
been a family business, which continues to thrive not just in Tuckahoe, but throughout the Tri-State area.
The Martin family creates floral arrangements for all kinds of events, ranging from weddings to funerals.
Even with their very busy schedule, the Martin’s still find time to drop off a different floral arrangement
every two weeks for our front desk. The residents can’t get enough of the beautiful flowers, which add
such vibrancy to the front entrance way. As if the Martin’s don’t do enough for us, they have also agreed
to join our Fall Watermark University team. Noreen, their lead designer, will be visiting the Fountains in
November to demonstrate how to make the perfect holiday arrangement- and guess where it is going -
that’s right, the front desk.

Last semester, D.J. Mix A’Lot’s Watermark University drum circle was a HUGE success!!! The Activity
Studio’s walls were literally vibrating from all of the music and positive energy cascading out of that room.
His class was so interactive that even our staff came in and started banging on the drums and dancing in
the center of the room. At the end of Michael’s performance, the residents and staff were begging for an
encore. So he promised to bring the party back to the Fountains next semester. This time around, he is
going to switch up the instruments. Michael will identify each instrument, demonstrate their sounds, and
the proper way to play each one. If you are a self-proclaimed Jimmy Hendrix or Ringo Starr and have your
own instruments, feel free to bring them to the party and join the rock show this November.

comes to mind? Usually Italian food, right? You are correct, however, there is so much more to
Mediterranean cuisine then just pasta and tomato sauce. Gene is going to share with us some incredibly
flavorful and nutritious Mediterranean meals that are staples in most Greek households. As always, expect
