how to cope with change
and stress in the tertiary world

It is a given that you will go through difficult times in the tertiary world. Most first year students will
struggle to cope with the demands of work and study, making friends, building relationships, budgeting
your money and spending a lot of time away from home. Sadly some students seek help and comfort in
dangerous ways such as excessive comfort eating, drinking, smoking and the use of illegal drugs, which
only lead to a vicious downward spiral. Instead, try applying the following strategies below to cope with

      and your ultimate career choice

      Personal branding

This is the manner in which you ‘market’ yourself to the world. Your personal brand is the ideas and
associations that other people perceive of you and the labels that people attach to you. Your personal
brand should reflect just about every aspect of your being, including the way you communicate, conduct
      yourself and dress.

Developing a strong personal brand depends on how you feel about yourself. Successful personal brands
‘sell’ positive and confident ideas, so you will need to ‘sell’ yourself by maximizing your strengths and
minimizing your weaknesses. Your personal brand should complement the career choice or qualification
      you decide to pursue

Important to note: Think of how you would brand yourself if you were applying for a bursary or
learnership with Sasol? Sasol’s values include safety, integrity, accountability and excellence.
Does your personal branding statement fit in with these? Are you a people orientated individual
      with these key values?

In developing your own personal brand, you will need to:
      • Discover your authentic self (who you are in your heart and soul?) e.g. I am a strategist and doer.
I develop and plan projects from start to finish, not thinking or talking about an idea but rather doing
it. Other authentic words you can use to describe yourself include; innovator, realist, networker,
          thinker etc.
      • Discover your purpose on earth (why was I born?) e.g. I was born to teach and train people, inspiring
and motivating them. Choose only one purpose in life and focus on that.
      • Discover your work values (what is important in my working life?) e.g. In my working life I value
integrity and honesty and providing service delivery to others. Other work values include; security,
          creativity, loyalty, power etc

      Personality types

Personalities cannot be described as good or bad or right or wrong, only as different. However there are
some personality types that suit some career fields better than others. Imagine if you hate making quick
decisions and you become a paramedic where people’s lives will depend on quick thinking. It is important
to choose a career that suits your personality or you could end up in a job that you hate.
