4 GENERAL HOEDSPRUIT HERALD Friday January 25, 2019 LETTERS: CHRISTINE DU PREEZ WRITES... MARGARET Thatcher once said: “It used to be about trying to do something. Now it’s about trying to be someone.” This seems to be the case when it comes to municipal matters at the moment. The problem though is in the “being.” Municipal Managers are BEING, reckless, irresponsible and uncaring to say the least. But we as taxpayers, residents and citizens aren’t being our best versions of ourselves either. We moan, we yell, we lodge complaints... But we’re getting nowhere. Unfortunately the situation is not going to change by being this way. It seems we have no option but to rather focus on DOING something. Just BEING angry and allowing ourselves to feel powerless is not going to change any circumstances for the better. Concerned parents have been calling because their children can not play in our parks. The long grass is a hazard due to possibility of snakes and lots of mosquitoes. Not to mention how unsightly the picture looks when one drives into our town. After 15 years the municipality still has no brush cutters, slashers or other equipment to assist. We complain about basic services all the time. To keep a clean town remains an issue. Luckily farmers have been helping to cut grass the last 15 years, but now they are swept up with the pressures of mango season. So who do we have left to assist with DOING something? You. Our residents, business owners, families, responsible citizens. Our call this morning is for people who want to step up and DO something and not BE miserable and demotivated by our government that’s letting us down. Please contact me if you have access to or own bush cutters/slashers or any equipment that can assist in us taking pride and ownership of our town. Let’s not just be citizens complaining. Let’s get on with DOING something for the good of our town and its residents. To join the cause call 083 300 2833. The parking areas in Hoedspruit are unaƩended to. Parks where children play have been overrun with long grass.
HOEDSPRUIT HERALD Friday January 25, 2019 GENERAL 5 Limpopo Animal Health Forum to host FMD disease explainer A foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) information day for farmers and stakeholders will be held on Wednesday 23 January at Adam’s Apple Hotel and Conference Centre near Louis Trichardt, Polokwane Review reports. The aim of the event is to comprehensively inform all concerned parties about the planned management procedures and responsibilities of each role player on the road to recovering the country’s export status. A panel of experts will answer all questions and concerns regarding FMD. Registration for the event will start at 08:00 and it is free. One of the key speakers, Dr Pieter Vervoort from the National Animal Health Forum, will address attendees from the national perspective, and will also explain the signs and symptoms of FMD. Dr Chris Mabaso, Head of the current Joint Operations Group will inform the farming community about practical steps to recovery. The event will close at around 13:30 with a light lunch. Queries about the event can be addressed to Gerhard Schutte, CEO of the Red Meat Producers Organisation (RPO) at 082 556 7296 or Willem van Jaarsveld, Chairperson of the Limpopo Animal Health Forum (LAHF) at 082 451 7913. The event is hosted by the LAHF and RPO. The organisations’ message to consumers is that meat in the shop fridges is as safe as always, and there is no need for concern. “Enjoy your red meat every day!” RESIDENTS ENCOURAGED TO SAVE WATER Local residents are urged to continue using water sparingly as the dam levels keep dropping weekly. Currently, the levels are sitting at 64,2%, and in the Olifants, it is now at 57,9%, a decline of 12,9% compared to last year’s 67,7%. According to the Department of Water and Sanitation, the province’s average dam levels are at 60,1% this week, with a slight improvement compared to last week when readings were recorded at 5,7%. A weekly summary of Water Management Area (WMA) for the province reflects a serious decline in dam levels compared to last year this time when water levels were at 71,0%. In relation to the provincial storage, even though some water levels are still in satisfactory percentage, the province still needs to continue to implement water restrictions so that reliable water provision is sustained until the rain comes. Water is a scarce resource and catalytic towards economic development and it must therefore be conserved at all times. The Department’s Acting Regional Head in the province, Lesiba Tloubatla, is appealing to the people of the province and those who are visiting our shores to always be careful whenever visiting our dams or our rivers for recreational purposes. “People should not enter into the water if they are unable to swim and parents should not leave their children playing along the dams of river banks unattended. “People should always be careful especially in places where it is indicated that fishing and swimming is not allowed. “We are currently experiencing severe thunderstorms in some parts of the province, so it is not advisable to be going into the dams or rivers during this period,” said Tloubatla.
