COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Dee Foster or Community 3rd Wednesday of the Angel Miracles Activity Room Life Team Month • 1:30pm In times of trouble, sickness or adversity we all pray for a miracle. These 50 real life Angel Miracles happen to ordinary people who experienced miraculous healing, divine intervention and personal messages from heaven. Come share these miracles hosted by Richard Thomas and talk about any personal experiences you may have had with an angel miracle. Dee Foster or 1st Thursday of the Animal Miracles Activity Room Community Life Team Month • 1:30pm Animal Miracles is hosted by Alan Thick. He shares stories of the close and sometimes uncanny relationships humans share with animals. These touching true stories take place in people’s homes, farms, aquariums, in the wild and some right in your own backyard. So come share in the Animal Miracles that are so unbelievable it will amaze you. Thursday August 23rd Aromatherapy Kim Larkins Activity Room • 1:30PM Kim Larkin is a licensed chocolatier former Activity Director/Art Teacher. Her fun multi sensory programs delight your eyes, mind. and taste buds. She has multiple stations where everyone makes dream pillows, soap, and bath salts using botanical /essential oils, history and provides a health benefit presentation. This class is limited to 20 people so please sign up early. Every Other Tuesday Art Appreciation Pam Skiba The Pub • 10:30am Learn about painting using various brushes and other items to create a unique one-of-a-kind piece of art. Have fun with colors and let your imagination take you away. We will be using acrylic washable paints so don’t worry about clean up. Learn about different and complimentary colors using a color wheel. Use a palette knife to create texture on your canvas. There are no skills needed to take the class, just bring your imagination and be ready to have fun! 2nd Tuesday of the Arts & Entertainment Dee Foster Activity Room Month • 1:30pm Join us as we highlight artist's and or entertainers from then and now. Some folks lived extraordinary lives outside of painting and entertaining and we would like to share their stories with you.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION 2nd Saturday of the Art Therapy Carol Cherrington Activity Room Month • 10:00am For the past six years, Carol has been sharing her passion for painting in senior living communities. In her class, you will have the opportunity to explore your inner artist and embrace the joy that can come from an artistic experience. Carol brings all the necessary supplies. All you need to bring is your creative spirit. Arthritis Exercise Class Tyrone V. Buckner Thursdays • 9:30am Wellness Room Tyrone has been a certified arthritis trainer through the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program for over ten years. This program is designed to help anyone who suffers from arthritis, related rheumatic diseases, or musculoskeletal conditions, allowing participants to perform activities of daily living. Residents are provided with enjoyable, safe exercises, social interaction, and an overall reduction of pain and stiffness. This class is done in a group setting. Experience a more active lifestyle, improved health, and increased sense of well-being. Alyssa Werbicki/Lena Third Tuesday of the Bird Talk Activity Room Beaulieu Month • 1:30pm Join us as we learn and talk about a wide variety of our aviary friends. In this Bird Talk class we talk about a wide variety of local, foreign, and seasonal birds like the Downy Woodpecker, Snow Goose, Blue Jay, Humming Bird and the Pileated Woodpecker to name a few. We will be periodically updating the birds so that we always have a new one to talk about. This class is meant to be educational and entertaining for all! 1st Tuesday of the Centerpiece Creations Jackie Doyle/ Residents Activity Room Month • 2:00pm We want to keep our community looking good and festive. The beginning of each month, residents will create new centerpieces to go on the dining room tables, based on the season or special theme for the month. So join us to make these special centerpieces for our community. 3rd Wednesday of the Color Me Calm Maryanne Fesko Activity Room Month • 10:30am Maryanne leads you through a wellness program designed around art and atmosphere. Join her as you relax with art and find your inner calm, with music and aroma therapy. Through this you can find your inner aura and express your creative side.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION 3rd Wednesday of the Creative Crafts Dee Foster Activity Room Month • 1:30pm Get ready to have some fun with Dee. We will be doing various crafts for the new year starting in January, February, March and April. So if you have an imagination then this class is for you. Come give it a try. Maybe you have some of your own craft ideas for the month. Every Thursday • Current Events Annalee Munson Activity Room 10:30am If you’re interested in the local and national news, join us as we sit and discuss the most important news stories of the week. Will you be able to guess the “Person of the Week,” from clues and biographical information? What country will we travel to during “Country of the Week”? Maybe you have been there before or maybe you have never even heard of it! Pay close attention because there will be a quiz at the end of every class! 2nd Tuesday of the Discovery Lecture Carol Evans Activity Room Month • 10:30am Health is a dynamic process because it is always changing. We all have times of good health, times of sickness, and maybe even times of serious illness. As our lifestyles changes, so does our level of health. Those of us who participate in regular physical, social, mental, emotional and spiritual activities are apt to live a healthier lifestyle. Join Carol once a month, she will cover different health, fitness and well being topics. Your never to old to learn new things. Thursday May 10th Eco Friendly Scarves Ellen Russell Wellness Room • 1:30PM Ellen Russell brings in silk scarves and an array of assorted flowers, berries, dried fruit, plants, and herbs where residents get to place them on the wet damp scarf, where we then roll it tight onto a roller, wrap it in wax paper, tie it with string and she boils them. Which she then brings them back in the next day and we unroll them and take all the dried flowers, and assorted assortment we put on our scarves off and then we see the finished product, which is so incredibly beautiful and no two scarves are the same. 1st Monday of the Famous Faces/Places Jackie Doyle Activity Room Month • 10:30AM The ultimate interactive memory trip down memory lane. Which will ask you to recall the names of famous people and popular landmarks located throughout the world. Jackie enjoys doing this program which challenges and entertains the viewer as well.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION East Village Place Associate Solmaria Vegas Getting To Know Me! Activity Room Associates & Families in June This program is a show and tell for the residents, associates and families. Tell us things like where you were born, share pictures from your childhood, how many siblings you have, how many children, what your hobbies are, if you collect things etc.…! This will give the residents, associates and families an opportunity to get to know you. This would be fun for everyone! Giving Back Sam Skiba & Dee Foster Ongoing Monthly Event Activity Room/ Lobby This class is a great way for resident, associates and other community members to learn about many local charitable organizations and how we can contribute. Every month a different charitable organization will be highlighted including information on; the organizations main purpose, who benefits from their services, how they get funded and what resources are greatly needed. A project would then be created around the needs of each specific organization. Examples include making care packages for the woman shelter, collecting blankets and toys for an animal shelter or collecting food for a food pantry. The Ins and Outs of Third Wednesday of the Jeff Ross Dining Room Dining Services Month • 11:30am Ever wonder what goes on behind the Scenes when it comes to Dining? Ever ask yourself why some things are done the way that they are done? Well then this is the WU class for you. Jeff Ross, the Dining Service Director will take you behind the scenes of the dining department. Jeff will discuss the Roles of the Associates, the Dietitian, the State, and Watermark’s Standards as they pertain to Dining Daily along with what the new THRIVE DINING program does for residents. Jeff will also give a tour of the kitchen where you will see the kitchen areas and the staff in action prepping, and plating meals for the residents. This course will happen once a month and space is limited restricted to 4 residents per class. Jeff will keep track of who comes so everybody who wants to attend will have a chance to attend. 2nd & 4th Tuesday of the Loom Knitting Dee Foster Library Month • 3:00PM Loom a Hat Easily. Round Loom Knitting is fun and almost fail-proof for people of all ages and of all knitting capacities, even with zero knitting experience. You need very basic, simple skills. If you can pull two strings with a hook you don't need to know much more. You have my promise that all will be fun and simple. Join Dee to learn how to make hats for the homeless, we have till the very cold months to finish.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Weekends/Second Memory Magic Community Life & Nayas Tuesday of the Pathways/Our Place Month • 3:00PM Memory Magic can be done with individuals, one-on-one, or a group of 10 residents. It increases levels of engagement, keeps residents involved, promotes use of cognitive abilities and fine motor skills. It is known to create an enjoyable, failure free experience. There are themed sessions such as “Wise Sayings” or “What’s in the Kitchen” that encourage conversation and memories. Gina Willette- Grace 2nd Wednesday of the Music Therapy Pathways Notes Music Therapy Month • 10:30am Gina provides music therapy in a small group setting. Residents are encouraged to sing along and play hand-held instruments and reminisce. Gina’s groups are open to residents of all abilities. The groups are focused on the time of year and group dynamics. Residents help with song choice and song preference. Last Thursday of the Origami Mike Shaw Activity Room Month at 1:30pm What is origami? It is the art of folding paper into beautiful sculptures and sometimes useful objects. The word origami comes from the Japanese words oru (folding), and kami (paper), and it was from Japan that this art form originated, many hundreds of years ago. We will start with simple, basic ideas that almost anybody can complete. Who knows, there are several projects that you may have made already that you never knew were origami. Mike is eager to teach this class so come have some fun. 2nd Wednesday of the Plant Man Jeff Eleveld Activity Room Month • 10:00am Horticulture is the science and art of growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants. It provides needed therapy that relieves tension and aids in physical and emotional health. Come plant with Jeff “The Plant Guy.” His abundance of knowledge will astonish you. Every other Monday Remember When Jackie Doyle Activity Room • 10:30am What year were you born in? What happened in 1950? Remember When is a class you don’t want to miss. The styles of clothing, who was president, what eventful or tragic thing took place? Join Dee on a journey down memory lane as we revisit historical events from 1920 to 2016.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION 3rd Thursday of the Sentimental Reflections Dee Foster Activity Room Month • 1:30pm Sentimental Reflections travels the country to produce the video series that celebrates America's heritage in story, scenery and song. The 45-minute DVD is released each Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter. There are trivia questions and time for discussions after the video. 3rd Monday of the Science for Seniors Dee Foster Activity Room Month • 1:30PM Science for Seniors is based on one belief: We are never too old to learn. Science for Seniors shows activity leaders how to provide stimulating science activities that provide both entertainment and enlightenment, as a part of a life-long learning process. Topics covered are volcanoes, oceans, global warming, rain forest and outer space using ordinary household items such as eggs, water, baking soda, and salt It's a hands on activity so be ready to get engaged and have fun. Travel through the 3rd Wednesday of the Patti Castelli Activity Room National Parks Month • 1:30 pm How many of you have traveled through America’s National Parks? Patti will take you on a tour of Our National Parks, we will soar through the majestic sights of our nation’s natural beauty. Prepare to explore America’s greatest treasures each one unique and will reveal the true heart and character of our great continent.
Faculty Biographies NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Alyssa Werbicki Various Community Life Classes Alyssa is a Community Life Assistant here at East Village Place. She grew up in Chicopee Mass and attended Chicopee Comprehensive High School. After graduation she received a scholarship "Student of Character" at American International College. Upon receiving a scholarship she received a 4 year paid tuition and earned her Bachelor Degree in Psychology. She has 2 brothers and enjoys playing soccer and hiking. Annalee Munson Current Events Annalee has been with East Village Place as the Memory Care Coordinator since 2003. Becoming a nurse at age 19, Annalee knew her calling for as long as she can remember. Annalee acquired her nursing license in Bridgeport, CT, with clinical training at Yale Hospital in New Haven. Annalee is also a Certified Dementia Practitioner and works closely with residents & their families in order to establish the perfect care plan for each individual. Annalee runs a monthly support group for families, “The Support Group allows me to help guide family members through coping with the challenges and triumphs when caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or Dementia. I’m able to let families know that what they are experiencing is normal.” In her spare time, Annalee loves to be with animals & work on her old farm house in Suffield, CT. Carol Cherrington Art Theraphy Carol Cherrington studied Painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University, in Boston, where she earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting and became licensed to be a public school Art teacher. Carol was a substitute teacher and personal care attendant for elderly and handicapped individuals. She began giving watercolor classes to Senior citizens, seemingly by accident when a close friend asked if she might like to give classes at the nursing home where that friend was an assistant to the activities director. That was in August of 2010 and it has been more and more rewarding, inspiring, and fun ever since. Carol has also been working full-time since 2009 as a Special Education Para educator at Amherst-Pelham Regional High School. She devotes her Saturdays to giving watercolor Art Therapy workshops at nursing homes, assisted living residences, and memory care residences. "I must insist that I always receive more than I give during my water watercolor workshops. It is deeply rewarding to see people light up with pride and satisfaction when they create a beautiful, original painting!"
NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Dee Foster Travel Class/Science for Seniors Dee has been the Community Life Director at East Village Place since October 2006. Dee is a certified Activities Director through the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals, as well as a, a Certified Dementia Practitioner. Prior to joining the EVP team, Dee was a certified nursing assistant and before that worked in the Customer Service Department at Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance. She loves what she does and the population she works with. Dee has 3 grown children and lives locally with her husband and is a big patriots fan, loves music and enjoys time with her family and friends. Jackie Doyle Famous Faces/Places & Remember When Jackie began volunteering at East Village Place in 2016. After retiring from MassMutual as a manager & test director for 33 years and prior to that as a math teacher, she thought she would go back to her teaching roots and work with children. That all changed when her Dad became a resident at East Village Place. She fell in love with the residents and knew she found her special place. You can find Jackie conducting Remember When or Famous People/Places classes when she's not singing along & dancing with the residents when guest performers entertain. Jackie lives locally with her husband Ed and loves visiting her two daughters in Boston, watching the Patriots & Bruins, and playing games. Jeff Eleveld Horticulture Class Jeffrey Eleveld, CHT: He is Certified Horticulture Therapist, lovingly named and referred to by his communities as Jeff, the plant guy. Jeff has over forty five-years’ experience in horticulture. He is an avid bonsai enthusiast and plant collector boasting over 300 plants in his personal collection. He has traveled extensively across Europe visiting gardens alone the way. Jeff is a published author. Jeff has written articles for the Hartford Courant, The Green Thumb Print and Knox Park Foundation. He is an adult education instructor. Jeff is a past founder of the Petit Foundations Michaela’s Garden. Jeff, the plant guy brings his therapeutic horticulture workshops to over 1250 people each month in assisted living communities, senior centers, skilled nursing homes, libraries, garden clubs and hospitals across Connecticut, Western Massachusetts, Western Rhode Island and Eastern New York. Jeff Ross Inn's & Outs of the Kitchen As food service Director and Executive Chef Jeff brings over 35 years of Local Restaurant and hotel experience from such companies like the Marriott and Sheraton to the residents here at East Village Place. Jeff always tries to create menus and weekly features that have a home cooked feel of the entire family coming together at the dinner table every night. In his spare time Jeff enjoys spending time with his wife and their 2 children, rooting for the Boston Sports Teams, Restoring late 60’s Mopar Muscle Cars and hitting the links for 18 holes with his brothers and friends on Sundays.
NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Jessica Szczepanek Grandbuddy Class Jessica has been the Director of Marketing at East Village Place since 2005. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Consumer Studies from The University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Jessica has been working in the senior living field since college and has an enthusiasm and spark for guiding families through the various options available in senior services. She grew up only miles from the community and has her roots firmly planted in Western Massachusetts. Jessica, her 3 young children and husband live close by in neighboring Longmeadow and enjoy getting outdoors, traveling and spending time with family and friends. JoAnn McNaughton Casino Night As a front desk Receptionist at East Village Place, JoAnn brings over 35 years’ experience in an office environment. She is the first point of contact for residents and family members as well as visitors to the community. She has excellent communication skills, a pleasant personality, and has the ability to handle changing situations at the front desk with confidence. JoAnn has been an associate at EVP since 2011. JoAnn lives locally with her husband and her dog Molly. JoAnn enjoys spending time with her family and friends, shopping, traveling, and summer vacations on Cape Cod. Lena Bealieu Various Community Life Classes Lena Bealieu is a Community Life Assistant here at East Village Place. Lena moved to the U.S. from Russia when she was 3 years old with her family.She grew up in West Springfield, Mass. Lena graduated from Cosmetology School and worked as a hairstylist/freelance make up artist in the town of Agawam. She has a husband whom she's been married to for 8 years, 2 beautiful daughters and 1 handsome son. Lena found her passion for Activities in a Long/Short Term Skilled Nursing Home/Rehab Facility. Maryanne Fesko Sunshine Club/Color Me Calm Maryanne is the Resident Care Director and has worked at East Village Place since 2006. Maryanne is a Licensed Practical Nurse and Certified Dementia Practitioner with over 20 years of experience in Assisted Living, Long Term Care and Hospital settings. Maryanne prides herself in creating individualized care plans for residents which allows each person to maximize their strengths and enhance their daily independence. Maryanne lives locally with her husband and has 3 grown children and 4 grandchildren who she loves spending time with.
NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Mary McRae Booster Bucks Auction Mary came to EVP in 2013 in the role of caretaker of a friend who had moved to EVP. While in this role she volunteered at various events. After her friend passed away, Mary stayed on as a volunteer and now leads the monthly Booster Bucks Auction, and helps out where she can. In her life outside of EVP, Mary owns a consulting business which provides organizations throughout the country with staff training, program development and designing and implementing business best practices. Mike Shaw/Bob Sheets Crossword Puzzle Michael Shaw was born and raised here in the Springfield area. For several years, he volunteered at the Massachusetts Audubon Society, helping to care for the wildlife zoo, which inspired him to get his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. Michael got a job processing checks for a local bank, right out of high school, and continued in that field for over twenty years. He has also been a zookeeper at Forest Park, a veterinary assistant, and when he wasn’t working two jobs, he volunteer as a Boy Scout Leader and a Sunday school teacher. Mike has been a member of the environmental services team since 2004. He and Karlene (C.N.A.) have been married since 2009. Pam Skiba Art Appreciation Pam Skiba, Executive Director, has been at East Village Place since 2004. Pam has over 20 years of nursing experience specializing in the mental health field and is a certified Dementia Practitioner. Pam strives to provide the residents and their families the highest quality of care and customer service in a warm, inviting and accepting environment. Her priority is making East Village Place the community that all others should be measured against. In her spare time Pam enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, ballroom dancing, oil painting and playing the piano. Patti Castelli National Parks As the Business Office Manager at East Village Place, Patti brings over 25 years of experience in Administration and Human Resources. Her transition from working in a corporate office setting to a smaller residential community has been a welcome bonus. When changing careers, she was pleasantly surprised to find she would be interacting with the residents daily and has found this to be one of the highlights of the position. Patti enjoys cooking, skiing, kayaking and time spent with family and friends. Patti is also a big fan of UCONN Women’s basketball!
NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Richard Hughes Silent Movies Richard Hughes has compiled many silent movie scores taken from authentic Mood Music that was played during the 1920s. This Mood Music enhanced the movie scenes by making it come alive in the third dimension. Currently, he travels around Massachusetts doing hundreds of movie shows a year at retirement communities. He particularly enjoys collecting stories about people’s experiences in the silent movie days. He finds that audiences of all ages laugh at the quick-paced slap stick style of acting that is reminiscent of the old Vaudeville days. Samantha Skiba Giving Back Business office assistant Samantha Skiba has been with East Village Place since 2005. Prior to working at East Village Place, she worked for a chiropractor as a licensed massage therapist. When Samantha is not at work she is often busy running her own business, Diaper Desserts. She also loves to attend her boys sporting events, bake, sew and do anything crafty. She has enjoyed the opportunity to share some of her favorite projects with the residents. Samantha lives in Ludlow with her husband and three sons. Sandy Grabierz Booster Bucks Auction A longtime volunteer at the East Longmeadow Senior Center, Sandy now joins East Village Place on the first Tuesday of the month for creative centerpieces for the community dining rooms. Her passion for contributing to the community is unmatched. Sandy also runs the monthly auction and the last Monday of the month at 1:30PM.Sandy has become an invaluable asset to both the Community Life Department and all of East Village Place Steve Michon No Bake Receipes Steve has been with East Village Place for a total of 6 years. He has been cooking professionally since he was 18 years old and decorating cakes as a hobby for almost as long. He finds it very calming and relaxing and he says “it brings me joy to see the look on someone’s face when they see the cakes I’ve made for them”. I hope to see a lot of you at my new cake decorating class for Watermark University.
