Lady Patti and I continue to be quite busy representing GIYC at various events at home and around the region. We attended the EMBC Ball honoring Commodore Neal LeBlanc and Lady Kim on February 1st at the Sheraton Hotel in Romulus. We had a marvelous turnout for the Speakeasy event at “The Keep” in downtown Detroit. We participated in the 2019 AYC Ball weekend honoring Commodore Tom Kovach and Lady Patty. I’m proud to announce that GIYC, together with PPBC and SSBC, won first place for our hospitality room! The Disney Magic was magical and a Great Time working with members of the other clubs to present GIYC with style to the AYC crowd in attendance. We also represented GIYC at the NCYC Burgee Ball held in Toledo honoring Commodore Bert Rossnagel and Lady Marilyn. The Burgee Ball is a celebration of the NCYC Members, not a traditional Commodore’s Ball. Great People – Special thanks to P/C Terry McCarthy for all his hard work getting GIYC looking good for the coming season. As I have said before, many Great People have influenced my time as a young adult sailor at GIYC. Featured on this month’s cover are a few photos of people that helped shape our GIYC experience. Because of these people I fell in love with GIYC, sailboat racing, and the people they attract. Share the love! Invite someone new down to enjoy the club and the many Great People that are part of it. Starting with P/C Ron Stempien, and my best man, Ronnie Stempien, who by then were actively racing Ragtime, Patti and I returned to GI in 1986 and started sailing out of GIYC once again. Believe it or not, the water was so low Ragtime could not sail at times which drove Patti and I to join the club and buy our first sailboat, Cheers. P/C John Perry and P/C Bruce Milkins introduced me to duck hunting where I won Rookie of the Year my first year of hunting. P/C Hartwell and I bought the Ugly Duck and sailed in JY15’s all over the country. After many seasons racing with Rick Bohl on Zephyr Hawk, we jumped in big and bought our first of two Abbott 33’s called I Love You Baby! all while raising three boys and introducing them to the art of sailing in the Jr. Program. Serving as Fleet Captain and on the Entertainment Committee back then really helped spark our involvement in the club which has continued to this day.
Great Lakes – Patti and I were down visiting our grandchildren, Claire and Simon, in Corpus Christi recently, flying over Lake Erie on the way home sure made me happy to be back and, oh baby, there is not much ice coverage so maybe we can launch early this year. Great Times – By the time this reaches your mailbox we will have taken a brief tour of Bourbon land thanks to Tyler Garrett. Feature events in March • Racing Rules and Boat Speed Seminars featuring world renowned Dave Dellenbaugh. Visit https://sites.google.com/prod/view/giycsailors/adult-racing to reserve your spot! See flyer in this issue for more details. • Sunday Brunch on March 15th. Hopefully upstairs again, it was spectacular last month! • St. Patrick’s Day party planned by P/C T. McCarthy. Can’t go wrong with Corned Beef & Cabbage. Be sure to make your reservations! • The Spring Equinox Sound Healing Meditation Saturday March 21st. A must try event! Flyer with details later in this issue. • Winter Rendezvous in Louisville, Kentucky March 26-29. 30+ Great People planning to have a Great Time! Great People, Great Lakes, Great Times, are what it’s all about. Commodore Todd Duffett
Lady Els and I had the privilege of representing our wonderful Club at the Sunseeker’s Boating Club Ball on February 8, and the AYC Commodore’s Ball on February 15 ….. at this rate (and we’re just getting started) I’m concerned about the fit of my uniform in the upcoming years! A new year, a new venue ….. this year’s AYC Commodore’s Ball weekend was held at Sheraton Metro Airport in Romulus, Michigan. This year’s theme was Everything Disney and our hospitality suite had a Disney Cruise theme. I’m proud to report that the team of Grosse Ile Yacht Club, Sunseeker’s Boating Club, and Point Place Boat Club did a great job of decorating our suite and we ended up taking 1st place for the Best Room. Disney Cruise passengers were greeted Captain Stubing (Commodore Todd Duffett) and Gopher (me) as they entered the ship for drinks and snacks. GIYC was well represented by the Balazys, Duffetts, Evans’, and the Fergusons ….. a great time was had by all! The Bourbon Trail Winter Rendezvous in Louisville, Kentucky is just around the corner (03/26 – 03/29) and it’s not too late for you to join us! Todd and Patti have a lot of great things planned and I’m sure it’s going to be a wonderful trip. Even if you’re not a bourbon drinker, it’s still going to be a great time to socialize with your fellow members! Lady Els and I have begun making entertainment arrangements for the Spring/Summer/Fall ….. please stay tuned to the Spray for more details in the upcoming months! As I mentioned in every one of my articles, there are many opportunities to get involved with the Club and to have some fun with your fellow members! I encourage each and every one of you to Get Involved! Keep your eye on the Spray for upcoming events! We hope to see you around the Club! V/C Jim Ferguson & Lady Els
