Linda Long at 484-955-0413 or email me at lindaslong@verizon.net . If I do not
hear from your club by March 21st, someone will call you for a commitment. So
please notify me before that time with your answer.

From the Governor Marilyn Wagner
The month of January was, surprisingly a fairly quiet one for
me………most of my Club visits are completed and thoughts are
already turning to our Lions Year of 2020 – 2021, however, having
said that I must make mention of a wonderful evening I spent
with the Leo’s of Avon Grove Hight School this past week – I was
invited by Leo Club President Joshua to complete his vision of
having the first Installation of Officers and Induction of new mem-
bers for some time. There were many parents in attendance and
a special video had been put together to show them what this
Service Club was doing. It was also an evening where I discovered that this Leo Club Chartered almost 20
years ago and that he was proud to be the third member of his family to hold the office of President. I
confess that I am in awe of the splendid projects all of our Leo Clubs are involved in – the wonderful ser-
vice these young adults either assist our Clubs with, or act on independently is amazing and we should
not forget the reality of these fine young men and women being our future - and should be encouraged at
all times. I am hoping to share more of the recently introduced Leo Lion Clubs program with them over
the course of the remainder of this Lions year - an opportunity for graduating Leo’s who are not heading
to College to form their own Young Leo Lions Club and continue their service beyond High School ………..or
you could simply join us at our District Convention at Trinity Church in Boyertown on Saturday April 25 th
2020 to discover more!
Steve Jobs said “Let’s go invent tomorrow instead of worrying about what happened yesterday”
I attended a couple of webinars this week too - one that really wowed me was called “Technology – Em-
bracing MyLion and Lions Learning Center” Huge shout out to PID Jerome Thompson and LCI’s Liz Huskey
for detailing the recent updates – you could not help but be excited at their enthusiasm and clear expla-
nation of what was New and Improved!
I am also happy to report that we have a number of our Lions who will take part in our upcoming Certified
Guiding Lion Workshop on Saturday March 7th, 2020 at the offices of Good Life Financial – the flyer is in
this edition and there are still a couple of places available if interested…….just contact either PDG Carl
Gundrum or myself to join us on that Saturday - as I hope to emulate the second webinar of the week
“How to Host an Exceptional Certified Guiding Lion Training” – you can be the judge if you attend!
In closing I would like to thank all of our Clubs who participated in the Four Diamonds ‘Pringles Chal-
lenge” I have been very pleased to hear from you and the generosity of your members.

I am not sure how many of you follow the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley on social media, but over
the Thanksgiving holiday they had some interesting posts that the local new media even pick up on.

They have a fairly new employee named Alex Cummings. She was following a post on Instagram about
Simeon a young man who lives in Jamaica that lost his sight in his one eyes 10 years ago due to indus-
trial accident. She found out that he needed a cornea transplant. She asked the CEO Lion Jim Quirk if
the eye bank could donate a cornea. He said YES. Alex then made arrangements for a doctor to fly in.
She and recovery technician Greg Dorn then flew down with 2 corneas. They took 2 corneas in case
there was a problem with the first one. Don’t you love when a plan comes together as it did. After
several day Simeon was feeling better then he had in the past 10 years and his vision is steadily im-
proving. The 2nd cornea also was used on another person in need.
This happen because of your generosity and the Eye Bank Gratis Program. This is the link to the FB post. https://

From the 2nd Vice District Governor Gary Hilbert

Congratulations to our District 14P clubs who recently experienced a growth spurt. Because
of your recruiting new members our District finished the half year mark with a positive
                           number despite the December drops.
Another feel good story is happening in our neighboring District 14U. Minersville Lions Club
recently held a reorganizing meeting with newly elected Officers and several new members.
They were on the brink of disbanding. A plea sent out by a past Officer over social media to
the community to save the club. People responded.
What really amazes me is the timing of all this. These events all happened during the “busy Holiday season”. Be-
tween the decorating, shopping and parties etc some very dedicated Lions found time to increase their service
footprint. Who will be the next 14P club to buy a bigger pair of shoes?

LCIF
This month I will begin with a little about our LCIF efforts in Australia and Puerto
Rico. As you know, when disasters strike as have occurred in these two areas,
LCIF is there with help very quickly.
A report that I saw in early January said that LCIF grants of $143,000 had been
given for disaster relief due to the Australian bush fires. Of this $103,000 had
been awarded for water tanks and there were four, $10,000 emergency grants
awarded in different areas of the country. A January 20th, Face Book post from
LCIF said that the amount granted was now $343,000. The post did not indicate a
breakdown for the grants given.
Another January 20th Face Book post focused on one city in Puerto Rico where tremors were continuing.
Thousands of people have been displaced and are living in tents, because their houses are unstable. Our
Lions Clubs, with the help of LCIF, are assisting with both short and long term needs.
The Face Book post reported that one family in Puerto Rico had been in their house for 28 years. They
did not have any damage from hurricane Maria but the recent earthquake had destroyed their home. They
spend nights with family, but sit outside their ruined home during the day to protect it from looters. When
told that the Lions Clubs would help them recover, they were very appreciative.
My report to our state LCIF coordinator for the month of December indicated that 17 of our 40 Lions
Clubs in 14P are now participating in donating to LCIF. This was an increase from 13 clubs that I reported
to you in the January issue of Lion Eyes.
At the end of December, our District 14P had cash donations of $7575 and another $1940 in pledges.
This is an increase of $1375 from the end of November. Another report that I saw indicated that we have
had $2350.50 in donations from individual Lions so far this year.
Thank you for your donations in the first half of our 2019-2020 Lions year, especially individual Lions
Club members who have donated as I have been asking in my club visits. However, our total raised or
pledged so far is only 17% of our goal for the year of $56,281. So I encourage all of our District 14P Lions
Clubs and as many of our individual members as possible to donate to LCIF before the end of June.

The Bally Lions Club recently partnered with Boy Scout Billy Geiger from Troop 291 Sassamansville, Pa. to build a
hospital equipment storage building. Scout Geiger used this project as his Eagle Scout Project. He conceived the
project, help raise funds, organized work crews, and attended planning meetings. The Bally Lions put over 500
man hours in to the projects construction. Lions of Pennsylvania Foundation donated $5000 to the cause.
The Club plans to store hospital beds, wheel chairs, walkers, commodes, shower chairs, crutches and canes that it
loans free of charge to the community. The building is located in the community park, next to the community
walking trail which was the clubs legacy project in 2017.

                     “One Wednesday” Program
It only takes One Wednesday a month
to provide a ride for one of our clients,
many of whom are homebound. VRC clients want to get out and get active in their community!
To do that we depend on drivers to provide transportation to our Wednesday activities, whether they are
local social activities, lunches, or support group meetings at 2020 Hampden Boulevard.
Our drivers are special people who not only give rides to clients, but also become friends of both our clients
and our staff. Drivers are welcome to get active along with clients and enjoy the social aspects of volunteer-
ing.
