PRESIDENTS REPORT WOW, what a tremendous SWAP meet we have just had. This year was without doubt the biggest and best yet. I know I have said this over the last few years but everything this year went so well and the weather was just about perfect, a cool morning followed by a sunny Gold Coast warm winter day. A lot of swappers set up on the Saturday afternoon and almost filled up the front section, it was great to see so many sellers who have been coming over the years return again this year, we must be doing something right. Without our happy 35 plus band of willing members who turn up each year to help on Friday, Saturday & Sunday, an event such as this would not happen. A sincere and grateful Thankyou to all our crew who manned the gates, organised car parking, organised the swappers and their sites, stayed overnight as security, cleaned up the rubbish and helped in lots of other ways. Pam`s cooked breakfast this year was ``just the best’’ with many members including myself going back for seconds. In 12 months’ time we can do it all again and judging by the great response we had from the public this year, it should be just as successful. Our Presentation Lunch on the 10th July at the Tugun Bowls Club was well attended by 40 + members. The day started with a delightful run organised by John & Peter through some areas behind Tallebudgera that I had never been before. This was followed by a lovely Christmas in July dinner and the annual Presentation of Trophies. I noticed that Col. our esteemed Treasurer had an armful of trophies to put on his shelf at home, well done. On Saturday the 16th July our club did the Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings Nerang. This had been organised some months ago by Col, it turned out to be a good fun day enjoyed by the members who helped and also it put a few dollars back into the kitty. Thanks to Col, who organised it all and spent a lot of time going shopping to get more supplies as we sold more than anticipated. It is with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of our lovely member Wendy Wood. John and Wendy have been members of our club for close on 30 years. They were a great team, John had been our rally organiser for at least 15 years and Wendy was always with him on all the club events. She was a rather private lady with a great sense of humour, a mother of 4 sons and 1 daughter, her presence at our events will be missed by us all. Her funeral on 21st of July was attended by many members from our club, our deepest sympathy goes to John and his wonderful family. Don`t forget our AGM club meeting is on Monday 8th August see you there. Crankhandle News 3
EDITORIAL Well here we are the last newsletter before the AGM, have you considered running of any positions this time. Our committee has been there a few years now and some new blood would be very good for our club. New blood means new ideas and possibly new adventures; we do need a new secretary this time. It’s not a hard big job, mainly recording inwards and outwards mail, recording the minutes at meetings and a few emails and letters out. As you read in Dave’s report we had a couple of good events in July, two of which have made a good increase to the clubs bank balance which helps keep fees down. The very sad news was the passing of Wendy Wood, this couple were very good friends of ours and we will miss her greatly and would like to pass on our personal wishes to John Wood. As I have said before I will run again for editor if you still want me to, but only for two terms at the most. Then its time out and for us it’s time to travel more around Australia and maybe OS, we will have to see. VALE WENDY WOOD It is with great sadness that we have to inform fellow club members of the recent passing of our lovely esteemed club member Wendy Wood. Wendy passed away on the 17th July and her funeral on the 21st July was attended by many of our club members, as well as family and friends. John and Wendy Wood had been married for 63 years, Wendy had 5 children, and they all lived mainly in the UK and also Spain for a short time. In later years John and Wendy moved to Australia living here on the Gold Coast, they have both been very enthusiastic members of our club for almost 30 years. Wendy was always there as the navigator with John on Rallies and events. Our deepest sympathy and condolences to John and family, we have been so lucky to have her as a member of our club and will all miss the friendly manner and happy smiles from this wonderful lady. gorffwys mewn heddwch Crankhandle News 4

Extra August event and cars are needed The Gold Coast Hinterland Heritage Museum is celebrating Seniors Week on Wednesday 17 August 2016.The museum will be open from 10am to 2pm. Seniors are admitted free for the day while adult admission is $5. As a feature for this day we will be journeying along memory lane with the many displays that depict the pioneering days of the Gold Coast Hinterland. We will have our “Singing Swagman” Col Boundy along to entertain us as well as a free Devonshire tea on our veranda to enjoy. The slab hut is a must to see how hard it was and how pioneers “invented” the ne- cessities of life. Displays are constantly being changed and updated. The Museum is located in the Mudgeeraba Heritage Centre, 238 Mudgeeraba Road Mudgeeraba. For further information contact, Anne Panitz on 5596 3165, email anne@panitz.com.au. If you are able to attend please contact Colin from our committee. We need to find out how many cars will be there, so that we can let the museum know. Greatest music event ever August 1969 The Woodstock Music & Art Fair—informally, the Woodstock Festival or simply Woodstock—was a music festival attracting an audience of over 400,000 people, scheduled over three days on a dairy farm in New York state from August 15 to 17, 1969, but which ran over four days to August 18, 1969. Billed as "An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music", it was held at Max Yasgur's 600-acre (240 ha; 0.94 sq mi) dairy farm in the Catskills near the hamlet of White Lake in the town of Bethel. Bethel, in Sullivan County, is 43 miles (69 km) southwest of the town of Woodstock, New York, in adjoining Ulster County. During the sometimes rainy weekend, 32 acts performed outdoors before an audi- ence of 400,000 people. It is widely regarded as a pivotal moment in popular mu- sic history, as well as the definitive nexus for the larger counterculture generation. Rolling Stone listed it as one of the 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll. The event was captured in the Academy Award winning 1970 documentary movie Woodstock, an accompanying soundtrack album, and Joni Mitchell's song "Woodstock", which commemorated the event. Some of the acts there were Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Jimi Hendrix, John Sebastian (Lovin Spoonful), The Who, Melanie, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Janis Joplin, The Band, Canned Heat, Grateful Dead , and Matthews Southern Comfort. TOOWOOMBA RUN Just a reminder about the three day, two night run to Toowoomba on 1st, 2nd and 3rd September. The run starts in Murwillumbah and goes out through Kyogle to Woodenbong where we stop for BYO Morning Tea. Then on to Boonah via Rathdowey for lunch. Because this part of the run to Toowoomba may be a bit hard for older cars and/or drivers there will be a second start at the Clubhouse with an easy run through Beaudesert to Boonah. Both runs are schedules to meet at the Flavours Cafe in Boonah for lunch. Then up to Toowoomba. We have booked the Toowoomba Golf Club for dinner. They provide a courtesy Bus which will pick us up at the motel and deliver us back after Dinner. On Saturday morning we will have an easy start with about ½ hour run out to Jondaryon for the Jondaryon Woolshed where a festival celebrating our shearing history is held. On this day the Jackie Howe Shearing championship are held, amongst other tourist attractions, concentrating on the wool industry (shopperholics can have a ball at the various stalls) and food is available. If anyone gets bored with this we have an optional run, after lunch, out through Dalby, Cecil Plains and Brookstead and back to Toowoomba. I f you are really interested in the Woolshed activities you can give the optional run a miss, and return to Toowoomba at your leisure. Dinner on Saturday night in at the Club Glenvale who also provide courtesy bus transport to and from the motel. Sunday’s return to the coast has been planned by Lyn Neuendorf with some sightseeing in Toowoomba and lunch at an interesting cafe on the way home. Accommodation has been booked at the JACARANDA PLACE Motel with rooms costing $125 per night which includes a Continental Breakfast. If you are interested in going on the run and have not booked at the Motel please call 1800 073 295 or 07 4635 3111.They will ask you for a deposit of $50 to hold the room. This run in an opportunity to travel through some of the spectacular Border Ranges country, the grazing country around Boonah and the famous Darling Downs grain growing area. There are still some rooms left but bookings close in early August so, if you are coming, call the motel. If you have any enquiries please feel free to call me on 0400722633. V8 POWERED LANDCRAB Not many people outside of the old BLMC (Australia) design team and top management know that during 1969 a V8 engine powered version of the Austin 1800 was produced and test driven around the streets of Sydney. The preliminary design layout for this car began as early as February 1968, only a couple of months after the take over of BMC by British Leyland. This was followed in April of the same year by the body layout, with minor compo- nent manufacturing starting in May. The manufacture of major components was under taken between October 1968 and January 1969, with the vehicle having its first run on the 10th March 1969. The car consisted of basically a fully trimmed ADO17 (Austin 1800) body being obtained from the main production line, this car had all its body panels forward of the ‘A’ pillar and dash panel removed. Specially made panels were fitted to the car which increased the overall length of the vehicle by 11.6mm, the existing front cross-member was used with only extra air vents added above the front bumper. Only minor changes were made to the front suspension, these included changing the position of the front displacers and the use of Triumph 2000 upper suspension mountings. While the steering made use was a LHD version of ADO17 steering rack inverted, coupled to a Ford Falcon steering wheel and column assembly. Several other items were changed and parts from other BMC vehicles as well as other manufacturers were used in this prototype, but the biggest change was in the engine and drive train of the car. The engine was a standard 3.5 litre Rover V8, with its stroke increased from 2.8 Crankhandle News 16
inches to 3.57 inch using a Repco single plane crankshaft, this gave a capacity of 4.2 litres. After a few changes to the induction system and a reduction in compression the engine was dynamometer tuned and tested. During these tests the engine was found to produce 236 ft. lb. of torque at 2000 rpm and 154 BHP at 4400 rpm. The major part of the design work was taken up by the transmission, which consisted of four separate assemblies bolted together. Basically it consisted of a standard Rover torque converter driven via an ADO17 auto gearbox front pump into a gear train which then transmitted the drive into a Borg Warner 35 Automatic gearbox. The final drive was then taken out of the front of the transmission case using Chevrolet Corvair components. The total cost of this prototype vehicle was $45 772 (1969 prices when a new Austin 1800 cost around $2500) According to some ex BLMC engineers that I worked with, this car was very quick from a standing start and even upset a lot of V8 Holden and Falcon owners who of course did not know that the car was fitted with a V8 engine, but it did not have the cornering ability of BMC’s over front wheel drive cars. As a result of these tests it was decided that a rear wheel drive car was more suited as an Australian replacement for the Austin 1800/X6 range and so the Leyland P76 was born. The above information comes from a BLMC Test report dated 10th July 1970. Crankhandle News 17
