Article 1 The DMZ is reborn as a world-class tourist site February 8, 2017 [Anchor] The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) shows that Korea is the only divided country in the world, and its exceptional natural beauty and its historical value have been recognized worldwide. This year, the DMZ will become a world- class tourist site boasting various attractions and programs that offer a multitude of content. Reporter Kim Hak-moo describes the scene. [Reporter] Camp Greaves has been vacant since the U.S. Forces Korea were relocated. Korean and international tourists are seemingly turned into military personnel after they don uniforms and both their names and temporary military service numbers are engraved on identification tags. Tourists wear black berets that resemble the real deal, but as soon as they hoist their guns, there’s no telling them apart from the Republic of Korea’s special forces. They busy themselves, taking photos in various poses reminiscent of those staged by heroes in historic dramas. (Continued in the next chapter) 2
The DMZ is reborn as a world-class tourist site February 8, 2017 [Jin Sul Ha / A Malaysian tourist: Coming to Korea and wearing a military uniform has been a lot of fun, and it has made the trip a memorable and unique one.] Construction of the Dokgae Bridge’s skywalk atop the Imjingang River’s piers was recently completed. The remains of an iron bridge that was destroyed during the Korean War (1950-53) were turned into an observatory overlooking the Imjingang River. The observatory is restricted for civilians, yet visitors can enter free of charge without separate admission, making the spot quite popular. The site boasts rest areas that include Pyeonghwa Nuri Park and features more than 10 events, including the Peaceful Unification Marathon and bicycle tours. The site attracts about six million tourists annually. A variety of content unique to the DMZ will be developed for tourists. It will also connect with various tourist destinations in the surrounding area through the establishment of supporting infrastructure, such as roads and campsites. [Won Jin-hee / Head of Gyeonggi’s DMZ Policy Team: Many tourist facilities related to the DMZ have expanded around the Imjingang River. In line with these facilities, we plan to make it into a world-class tourist site by developing tourist experiences unique to the DMZ.] The DMZ, whose untainted nature still bears the war’s painful history, will be introduced as South Korea’s representative tourist product. This is YTN Kim Hak-moo [mookim@ytn.co.kr]. 3
Article 2 Camp Greaves, known as filming site of Korean drama ‘Descendants of The Sun,’ attracts 4 times more tourists in just 3 years January 25, 2018 Gyeonggi Province used the transferred U.S. military base that is located within the Civilian Control Line (CCL) to create the Camp Greaves DMZ Experience Center, which has continued to gain popularity with tourists. On Nov. 25, the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization and Paju City announced that the total number of tourists who had visited Camp Greaves in 2018 was 23,116. This is more than four times the 5,771 tourists who visited in 2014 when the site first opened. The number of visitors was 11,993 in 2015 and 17,128 in 2016, showing an annual increase of about 5,000 since its first year. Camp Greaves is a former U.S. military base that is located within the CCL about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the Southern Limit Line (SLL). U.S. forces had been stationed at Camp Greaves since 1953 until it was finally transferred in 2007. Through an agreement with the Ministry of National Defense, Gyeonggi Province acquired part of Camp Greaves, turning it into a multipurpose cultural exhibition space on Dec. 12, 2013. Camp Greaves, known as filming site of Korean drama ‘Descendants of The Sun,’ attracts 4 times more tourists in just 3 years January 25, 2018 In 2016, Camp Greaves drew attention as the filming site of the Korean drama “Descendants of The Sun.” Uruk, the drama’s fictional background where Capt. Yoo Si-jin (Song Joong-ki) and Dr. Kang Mo-yeon (Song Hye-kyo) appeared, was actually filmed at Camp Greaves. After the drama’s huge popularity in China and other Asian countries, the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization reorganized the filming site to attract foreign tourists. Signs and photo zones were established at various locations where the drama was filmed, including the site that was used as Uruk’s main headquarters, the office where the main characters received phone calls, and the facility where actor Song Joong-ki fought a U.S. solider. In order to securely promote tourism, Paju City will begin installing an aerial tramway across the Imjingang River this year. Aiming to complete construction in early 2020, the project will safely connect tourist sites along the Imjingang River’s southern bank and Camp Greaves, which lies on the northern bank, via aerial tramway. Paju City expects that the tramway will contribute significantly to achieving its goal of attracting 10 million tourists. 5
Article 3 The DMZ that bears war wounds is being born again as a cultural space August 12, 2018 [Anchor] The Korean Peninsula’s Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) still bears wounds of division. Yet it has recently begun to resemble an art exhibition to promote peace. Reporter Kang Na-hyeon visited the site to discover more on the subject. [Reporter] The exhibition, which resembles a warehouse, is filled with orchestral music. World-famous classical musicians and young music-lovers from around the world gather to create a peaceful harmony at the bowling alley inside Camp Greaves, a former U.S. military base situated within the Civilian Control Line. [Won Hyung-jun / Lindenbaum music director: We wanted to prove that we can become one through music. We chose this location because we believe it could facilitate communication between [South and North Korea]. Camp Greaves, which is about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the boundary line that divides the South and the North, was where the U.S. Army was stationed for over 50 years, between 1953 and 2004, before the site was returned to the Korean government in 2007. Artists have begun to reinterpret the meaning of a place that has, until now, quietly borne war wounds. The armory where bullets and grenades were stored has been turned into grounds for peacefully roaming deer. Visitors can even find a slide and swings on the grounds. A gun made of glass aptly shows the emptiness of war. [Jung Bo-kyung / visual artist: The DMZ used to be [in reality] a heavily-armed demilitarized zone. I wanted to show a glimpse of what it was originally intended to be as an area of peace.] The DMZ’s divisive wounds were relieved by the artists’ work and the place is now being born anew as a space for realizing peace. 6
Article 4 Gyeonggi and the Hankyoreh Stories of DMZ (1) September 19, 2019 (In celebration of the April 27 Panmunjom Declaration’s first anniversary, Lee Jung-hyun participated in the demilitarized zone’s (DMZ) peace hand-holding event held at the Civilian Control Line (CCL) in Imjingak in Paju City, Gyeonggi Province. Together with her two daughters, she affixed flowers and the Korean unification flag to a barbed-wire fence.) Camp Greaves becomes a symbol for peace Camp Greaves, a U.S. Forces Korea’s (USFK) military base from 1953 to 2004, was transformed into the only demilitarized zone (DMZ) experience center where visitors can lodge. Young artists implement cultural and artistic projects at the old armory and Quonset hut. Camp Greaves is located just 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) past the Imjingang River’s Unification Bridge in Paju City, Gyeonggi Province. Located on a low ridge of a mountain’s northern foot between Freedom Bridge and Unification Bridge, visitors can see the facility’s roofs if they stand on their toes inside the Imjingak Observatory. Camp Bonifas, a United Nations Command military post in the Joint Security Area (JSA), is nearby. Camp Greaves, however, is a USFK base located inside the Civilian Control Line (CCL), which is evidence of the Korean Peninsula’s divisive wounds. Camp Greaves, which is just 2 kilometers from the DMZ’s Southern Limit Line (SLL), was used by the USFK for just over 50 years after the armistice was signed. Since the military facilities are well preserved, they hold high historical value. The barracks and headquarters that were used by the USFK, as well as the low-Quonset barracks built in a semicircle using corrugated sheet iron, look like something you might find in an old movie. There are few Quonset barracks left; this is the only one with an interior preserved in its circular form. (Continued in the next chapter) 7
Gyeonggi and the Hankyoreh Stories of DMZ (1) September 19, 2019 The officer and noncom quarters also seem like they were built to be more luxurious and convenient than the Quonset barracks, which are made up of temporary buildings. There are also USFK facilities with preserved traces, including the armory where live ammunition and mortar rounds were stored, the vehicle -repair center, and the gymnasium equipped with exercise facilities. Camp Greaves, which was used as a security education site, has borne divisive scars for the past 50 years. Now it is filled with peaceful messages of coexistence. After the withdrawal of the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Division that was stationed at Camp Greaves, the U.S. base was originally slated to be demolished. In 2013, Gyeonggi Province, Paju City, and the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization assumed the role of healing the DMZ’s scars with life and hope by remodeling the camp into a peace, security, and ecological experience facility that made the most of the distinct characteristics as a divided country. The concrete barracks are relatively modern structures that were remodeled into the only experience accommodations inside the CCL. After opening as a youth hostel, Camp Greaves began to resemble a DMZ experience center. The Quonset barracks and the officer’s and sergeant’s quarters were used as exhibition halls with the theme of division. The gymnasium was used as a concert hall. The makeover was completed last year with a double barbed-wire fence that surrounds the camp, forming traces reminiscent of the boundary of the front line. Near the Camp Greaves DMZ experience center are the Third Tunnel, Dora Observatory, Dorasan Station, Dorasan Peace Park, and Tongil-chon, creating an environment for security experiences, as well as for discussions about peace and unification. The cultural and artistic projects of young artists are also another message of peace that one can enjoy inside the USFK barracks and armory. According to Gyeonggi Province, in the first half of this year, between January and June, 10,864 people visited Camp Greaves, a 30.6-percent increase compared to the same period last year (8,321 people). Foreigners accounted for only 3.9 percent of the total, with 325 people in the first half of last year; this year, the number increased to approximately 20 percent, with 2,161 people. Last year, Gyeonggi residents accounted for 60 percent, but this year the percentage of residents from other regions increased to 55 percent. (Continued in the next chapter) 8
Gyeonggi and the Hankyoreh Stories of DMZ (1) September 19, 2019 Meanwhile, in celebration of the first anniversary of the September 19 Pyeongyang Joint Declaration, Gyeonggi Province plans to hold an academic forum, performances, and exhibitions through “Let’s DMZ” to promote Gyeonggi residents’ hopes for peace on the Korean Peninsula. These events will take place in the northern part of Gyeonggi over a one-month span in September. (Refer to Page 4) Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung said, “We prepared an event to celebrate the first anniversary of the Pyeongyang Joint Declaration that people around the world can enjoy together. This is an ideal opportunity to let the world know the importance of peace on the Korean Peninsula and the peaceful value of the DMZ.” A photo zone provided at the e The old ammunition storage wi A runner jogs beside a barbed- ntrance of the Third Tunnel. thin Camp Greaves is reborn as wire fence as he participates in The mannequin military police a cultural space for exhibiting the trail-running competition officers are popular with original artworks. Gyeonggi and the Hankyoreh Stories of DMZ (2) September 19, 2019 What should I do if I go to Camp Greaves? The Camp Greaves DMZ Experience Center (Youth Hostel), located in Paju City, Gyeonggi Province, is the only accommodation inside the Civilian Control Line (CCL) that provides various experiences. A safe and convenient facility given the highest evaluation of any youth training facility in 2018 by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, many group tours have visited the place to enjoy peace, unification, and ecological experience programs carried out by skilled youth field specialists. Camp Greaves is only about 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) from the demilitarized zone’s (DMZ) Southern Limit Line (SLL). From the armistice marking the cessation of the Korean War (1950-53) through to 2004, the site hosted the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK). It is one of the oldest U.S. military bases in Korea. Traces of the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division’s 506th Regiment can still be found here. It is particularly popular as a historical site given visitors can see USFK architectural styles ranging from the ’50s to the ’90s. In August 2004, after the relocation of USFK personnel, the site was almost demolished, yet Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization turned it into a peace and security experience facility for civilians in 2013. With the cultural and artistic project beginning in 2016, it has been born anew as a place providing peace and security experiences, as well as integrating history, culture, and art. In order to vitalize Camp Greaves’ role as a DMZ culture platform, Gyeonggi Province implemented the DMZ Peace Platform project last year, which was attended by a team of 10 artists and showcased 17 artworks that included the DMZ’s location and its historical meaning, while also conducting various programs, including performances and festivals. It was also chosen as a model cultural regeneration project by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. A Gyeonggi Tourism Organization official said, “Camp Greaves could provide the beginning of a global art creation hub where you can discover the results of the project that incorporate the meaning of time, memory, and peace.” Some of these artworks welcome visitors throughout Camp Greaves. Gyeonggi and the Hankyoreh Stories of DMZ (2) September 19, 2019 I’m a starring character of ‘Descendants of The Sun’! Camp Greaves was one of the main filming sites of the Korean drama “Descendants of The Sun.” It offers experiences related to that drama by making some of the filming sites available. You can actually become the drama’s protagonist in the exact place where Yoo Si-jin and Kang Mo- yeon met and fell in love. You can also enjoy fun experiences like wearing uniforms, making your own ID tags and taking photos. Armory like back in the day The site consists of the USFK’s representative structures and the surrounding scenery. If you open the door and enter the armory that is preserved like in the old days, you will be surprised at the sight of art instead of ammunition. This is because while the exterior has been left intact, the interior is being used as an exhibition hall. Currently, artist Lee Ho-jin’s “Himango” (Photo 5) is being exhibited for visitors. Viewing the painful history ‘Special exhibition’ ‘Documenta Hall’ The USFK’s unique Quonset hut barracks, built during the ’50s, are being used as a special exhibition hall where you can see historical and cultural exhibitions. Currently, it showcases the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission’s (NNSC) special exhibition. This exhibition showcases photos of the DMZ and Joint Security Area (JSA) recorded by four NNSC countries – Switzerland, Poland, Sweden, and Czechoslovakia – during the Korean War. There are also documentary photos of North Korean war orphans who went to Poland, as well as photos that capture the daily lives of North Korea taken by Czechoslovakia NNSC members, showing the pains of that time. The Documenta Hall, located across from the special exhibition hall, offers rare historical data and content related to the USFK stationed at Camp Greaves, the DMZ, and the Korean War. Gyeonggi and the Hankyoreh Stories of DMZ (2) September 19, 2019 How different will the gymnasium and the bowling alley be? The gymnasium and the bowling alley that were actually used by the USFK received minimal remodeling in becoming host to the DMZ documentary film festival, special performances, and events. If you look at the flooring, the ceiling, or the walls, there are traces that make you imagine what the USFK bowling alley might have once been. The trail that you can walk along the barbed-wire fence You can also walk along the double barbed-wire fence that acts as the boundary of the front line. The natural environment preserved as an ecosystem seems like a gift. Places to visit nearby The Third Tunnel You can visit in person the Third Tunnel found in 1978. There are various attractions for visitors, including the DMZ Image Center. (Continued in the next chapter) 13
Gyeonggi and the Hankyoreh Stories of DMZ (2) September 19, 2019 Dora Observatory Located in the very northern part of the Military Demarcation Line on the western front, you can observe the DMZ and North Korea closely. You can view the vast nature of the DMZ, Panmunjeom, and North Korea’s Kaesong Industrial Complex, as well as the adjacent Kaeseong and Gijeong-dong (North Korea’s Seonjeon Village). Tongil-chon Jangdankong Village A clean village inside the CCL where you can make tofu and sauce, regional specialties, from Jangdan soybeans at a slow food experience site. Imjingang River Pyeonghwa Nuri Park You can take a look at various peace and security facilities, including the Bridge of Freedom and steam locomotives at Jangdan Station. With various artworks installed, there is an outdoor concert hall and grass hill that can accommodate 30,000 people. Dorasan Station As the northernmost station south of the Gyeongui Line, this station symbolizes wishes for unity. You can also take a look at the historical facilities on the restored Gyeongui Line (Seoul-Sinuiju) and the unification platform that was created with the actual Berlin Wall. Dorasan Peace Park This park is located next to Dorasan Station. You can visit the Unification Forest, the Battle of Yeonpyeong Hero Forest, an ecological pond, and an exhibition hall, as well as experience the natural ecology area. 14
Article 5 Establishment of Camp Greaves’ historic park gathers momentum March 27, 2017 Camp Greaves, a former U.S. military base that was in operation until the Army was relocated to Paju City, Gyeonggi Province, has recently come into the spotlight. On Nov. 27, Gyeonggi Province announced it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of National Defense. This MOU details the terms and conditions of Gyeonggi’s acquisition of Camp Greaves, which had previously been in the Ministry of National Defense’s possession. In return, Gyeonggi Province will donate the surrounding 259,000 square meters of land, as well as provide an alternative military facility, to the ministry. The acquisition is expected to lead to the creation of a historic park that would cover about 118,000 square meters through an investment of 35.9 billion won (US$30.8 million). Gyeonggi Province will first establish basic infrastructure, including water and sewage, by the end of 2020. In addition to the youth hostel that is currently in operation, army life and ecological experience centers as well as a historic exhibition hall will also be created. A Gyeonggi official said, “We plan to make Camp Greaves the security, ecological, cultural, and artistic hub that connects tourist sites at the Third Tunnel, the Dora Observatory, the Unification Village, and the Imjingang River.” Camp Greaves was used by the U.S. Forces Korea starting in July 1953 right after the Korean War (1950-53) for about 50 years until the dispatch of troops to Iraq in 2004. Since 2013, Gyeonggi has used part of the site’s living quarters as the Camp Greaves DMZ Experience Center youth hostel. 15
