Make an impact on the world around you Dear Parents , Students and Beloved Teachers– Warm welcome to everyone! I would like to say thank you to all students, parents and teachers. You are deeply valued members of the Anak Terang School. For this reason, you will always be special to me. We are committed to cultivating students who can thrive in a changing world and find solutions to the problems around them. We will help them gain the unique skills, confidence, and experience to make a good impact on everyone around them. They will be able to demonstrate their learning not only in their finished products but in the skills and habits they bring to new situations. We have a number of programs this March.. First, we have a Green Day Program to commemorate “ Hari Sampah Nasinal”. Stu- dents have made various crafts from unused items at home. Second, we have our Charity program this month. “Charity is an exercise, a training, a discipline of shaping our character to become less of ‘me’, but more of ‘us’, as a community.” (Willy Tan). I would like to thank you for your participation on this program. Third, Report book and Student led conference will be held on February 13th , 2021 through Virtual Zoom. We encourage our students to be active learners and active participants of their own education. An excellent way to achieve this is to put students in charge, allowing each individual to set their targets, track their goals and demonstrate their achievements. In the student-led conference approach, students and teachers prepare together, and then students lead the conference while teachers facilitate. Students develop the understanding that they initia- tion of their own ambitions and both parents and teachers are there to facilitate their goals. Famous People with Learning Disorders You’d be surprised how many of your favorite celebrities have struggled with basic learning skills growing up. [The image above illustrates how a dyslexic sees words: blurry and incomprehensible]. And yet despite the ridicule they often suffered in school, in social situations, and sometimes at home, they had the inner strength to persevere. What follows is a list of celebrities who struggled with various disability issues before hitting it big. Actors, businessmen, sports heroes, they can and should serve as inspiration to us all. Justin Timberlake (ADD and OCD) In a 2008 interview with Collider.com, singer, songwriter, and actor Justin Timberlake revealed that he has both Attention Deficit Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and is quoted as saying “I have OCD mixed with ADD. You try living with that.” His OCD manifests in the need to have things line up correctly, and only allowing certain foods in his refrigerator. Despite battling his obsessive thoughts, Timberlake has had an incredi- bly successful career in the entertainment industry, even winning nine Grammy Awards and four Emmy Awards. Keanu Reeves (Dyslexia) Star of The Matrix trilogy, Point Break, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and most re- cently John Wick, Keanu Reeves’ dyslexia caused him to struggle in school. In an inter- view with Handbag Magazine he said, “Because I had trouble reading, I wasn’t a good student … I didn’t finish high school. I did a lot of pretending as a child. It was my way of coping with the fact that I didn’t really feel like I fit in.” His gift for pretending has served him well in his acting career, which is still going strong after 30 years. Whoopi Goldberg (Dyslexia) Actress, writer, and producer Whoopi Goldberg was actually called “dumb” while growing up due to her dyslexia. “I knew I wasn’t stupid, and I knew I wasn’t dumb. My mother told me that,” she said in a 2004 interview. With leading roles in movies like Sister Act, The Color Purple, and Jumping Jack Flash, and being one of the only ten people to win an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award; she has certainly proven her critics wrong. Daniel Radcliffe (Dyspraxia) Most notable for his role as Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe has lived with a mild case of dyspraxia for his entire life. Dyspraxia is a common neurological disorder that affects mo- tor skill development, meaning that at 25 years old and the star of one of the largest fran- chises in movie history, Radcliffe still has trouble tying his shoelaces. In an interview re- garding his Broadway debut, he once jokingly stated ‘I sometimes think, Why, oh why, has Velcro not taken off?’ Michael Phelps (ADHD) Growing up, champion swimmer Michael Phelps was continually criticized by teach- ers for his inability to sit still, and was formally diagnosed with ADHD when he was in fifth grade. After being on Ritalin for over two years, Phelps chose to stop using the drug and instead used swimming to help him find focus. His choice clearly paid off, as he ended his Olympic career as the most highly decorated Olympian of all time, boasting 22 medals (18 of them being gold). Richard Branson (Dyslexia) Entrepreneur, billionaire, and “The only person in the world to have built eight billion-dollar companies from scratch in eight different countries.” Richard Branson is a model for suc- cess, he is also dyslexic. Unlike many, who consider dyslexia a curse, Branson calls it his “greatest strength.” Growing up in a time when dyslexia was largely misunderstood, Bran- son’s teachers simply labeled him as lazy or “not very clever.” After starting up a success- ful alternative newspaper in high school, he was confronted by his headmaster who said, “Congratulations, Branson. I predict that you will either go to prison or become a million- aire.” Looking back on the incident Branson said “That was quite a startling prediction, but in some respects he was right on both counts!” https://www.special-education-degree.net/
A test can be used for different purposes in a teaching learning process. It can be used to measure the progress dur- ing the teaching learning process and to decide the mastery level achieved by the students. It answers to the questions, what previous knowledge does the pupil possess. Therefore it must be decided whether the test will be used to measure the previous knowledge acquired by the student on the sub- ject. TRY OUT SCHEDULE Try Out 1 : 24 February - 2 March 2021 Try Out 2 : 8 March—15 March 2021 There are many things you can do before an exam to help you prepare well for your exams. The more you do to pre- pare for an exam beforehand, the better you will feel during the exam. Plan Your Study Time Make time for studying. Setting aside regular time to study is critical for achieving high test perfor- mance. We recommend preparing a term calen- dar, weekly schedule and daily schedule that in- cludes regular study sessions. It's so easy for work and other activities to quickly take prece- dence over studying, so plan your study time in advance. As you progress through the term it's okay to amend your study schedule to meet your needs, but make sure you plan study sessions in advance – and that you stick with them. Use Visual Aids Visual aids, including charts, diagrams and graphs are great study helps – especially if you're a visual learner. Organiz- ing information into diagrams and charts helps to condense and simplify information and improves recall at test time. Prepare an Outline Prepare an outline of the main topics and concepts that will be covered during an exam, then use this sheet to study. Why kids need to play Observe a playground, classroom, or your own children at home as they freely play with each other, and you’ll see the building blocks of social interaction developing right in front of you. Children learn how to share, cooperate, negotiate, and resolve conflicts by playing together. When play breaks down, children’s drive to keep playing inspires them to find a new way to get past the disagreement and start again. They experiment with conflict resolu- tion, communication, and compromise. The cycle repeats, and their development con- tinues. Children also build relationships through play, including with other kids who are similar and different. These relationships develop through both the joy and conflict that are inherent in playing. It’s not just kids who develop social connections through play. The kids know they have mastery in play, inherently. It is the one activity where the adults do not necessarily know more than they do. When joined by teachers and parents, chil- dren playing understand that they matter and that playing is a valuable activity to adults—and the grownups develop con- nections with the kids and with each other. Researchers have recently asked deeper questions about the benefits of playing in the context of social-emotional devel- opment and critical life skills. In a 2019 study examining the correlation of the quality of play at recess with student be- havior, researchers William Massey and John Geldoff found four statistically significant findings: • Executive functioning: The cognitive skills that help a child focus attention, remember details, solve problems, and make plans. • Resilience: The ability to overcome adversity, quickly recover from mistakes, cope with change, and solve problems. • Emotional self-control: The ability to resist immediate temptations and avoid acting on impulse in response to envi- ronmental changes. • Positive classroom behavior: These behaviors include adaptability (e.g., able to transition), functional communication, leadership, social skills, and study skills. https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/ Hello Friends & Families of Yayasan Anak Terang! What is Project Based Learning? Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills. Learning is no longer about passively learning facts and reciting them. Today, students need both fundamental skills (reading, writing, and math) and 21st century skills (personal and social responsibility, problem solving, critical thinking, time manage- ment, research gathering, knowledge of technology tools) to solve highly complex problems in the world around them. Project Based Learning acknowledges these skills and gives students the opportunity to become managers of their learning, while still being guided by a experienced teacher. Students are Actively Engaged Students are genuinely showing a lot of interest in Project Based Learning projects as they ac- tively search for answers and take learning into their own hands. PBL implements real-world issues in which students can take an active role in learning how it affects them and the world around them. A Sense of Purpose They are making a real-world impact when they are able to find solutions to problems that those around them may be facing.
Make Music & Movement Social https://www.activekids.com/ If you have several children, whether at home or in a classroom, doing a music and movement circle is a great way for kids to get active and socialize together. As your children grow older, they'll become more comfortable, open and excited about physical activity, music and participating in social events—all of which will encourage them to have an active lifestyle far beyond their childhood years. The main goal of including music is to help motivate and make exercise fun and enjoyable while teaching kids how to live a healthy and active lifestyle. And don't forget to participate too; leading by example is the best way to get your kids involved. Teaching Paragraph Writing : Conclusions Teaching conclusions is one o the most difficult parts of teaching kids to write well- written paragraphs. They may be able to write a topic sentence, and three star ideas with details, but when it comes time to add a conclusion sentence, it’s almost like they’ve run out of steam. The Students practices are great for beginning to write conclusion because not only it is non-threatening (way easier than coming up with your own conclusion ), it also models correct examples while showing the students what to avoid. Teachers hand out a similar worksheet and the students get to decide what to write on their conclusion. They revise these conclution and discuss them as they go.
Lunar New Year 2021 A Virtual Celebration Through the memorable activities, the students learned & appreciated the Chinese traditions when they celebrated this special day with their school- mates and their loved ones. Our day of celebration featured new performances shared thru zoomand live youtube on February 22nd, 2021. Activities included viewing dance and musical performances, watching a traditional lion dance and listening to a story “ The legend of Nian”.

ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS TO LEARN ABOUT RECYCLING Here are activities that demonstrate the importance of recycling while making it doable and functional for kids: Turn leaves into great pictures DIY Toy Recycling with kids is incredibly im- portant to do, and a good knowledge which needs to be to promoted bypar- ents and educators. Kids will see that recycling goes beyond simply having a second garbage bin. By repurposing items before throwing them away, kids will learn that making new items from recycled ones takes less energy and fewer resources than making products from brand new materials. Anak Terang Elementary School has conducted its first batch of placement tests on February 20, 2021. This test was conducted online. The results will be announced at the end of March 2021. Placement test plays a key role in developing your confidence in your ability to learn, as well as in developing your lifelong learning skills.
