April 2022 2022 Congregational Watchword: With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. Isaiah 12:3 LOGOS Logos April 2022 –A Holy Week in the midst of holy days April 2022 is a special time for many faith communities around the world. It is rare for so many of the different world religions to celebrate their religious holidays at the same time. Our Islamic brothers and sisters will begin their month-long celebration of Ramadan on April 2nd and ending on May 3rd. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and is the holy month of fasting. The Islamic calendar is 10 – 12 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar, which we use, which means that Ramadan falls earlier each year than the previous year. For Muslims, Ramadan is a period of introspection, communal prayer (ṣalāt) in the mosque, and reading of the Qurʾān. God forgives the past sins of those who observe the holy month with fasting, prayer, and faithful intention. Our brothers and sisters at the Islamic Center of Lancaster have invited us to join them for the breaking of their fast, each Friday and Saturday evening during Ramadan at 7:30PM. Passover is the Jewish holiday commemorating the Hebrews’ liberation from slavery in Egypt and the “passing over” of the forces of destruction, or the sparing of the firstborn of the Israelites, when the Lord “smote the land of Egypt” on the eve of the Exodus. Passover begins with the 15th and ends with the 21st (or, outside of Israel and among Reform Jews, the 22nd) day of the month of Nisan (March or April). In 2022, Passover begins on April 16, 2022 and ends on April 2022. Passover is commemorated with a seder dinner and the retelling of the Exodus story. Sikh individuals will celebrate their New Year’s Holiday of Vaisakhi on April 13th or 14th. This holiday is to remember and celebrate the Khalsa, those baptized into the Sikh faith. It is celebrated with singing, reading of texts from their holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib. Zoroastrians celebrate Farvardinegan on the 19th day of the first month of the Solar Hijri calendar. This year that falls on April 8th. Farvardinegan is a ceremony to remember the deceased where celebrants visit the graves of their deceased. They burn agarwood and olibanum for the peace of the souls and put plants, fruits, and candles on the graves. Jains (Mahavir Jayanti) and Buddhists will both celebrate the birth of their religious guides, and those of the Baha’i faith celebrate what we would call the consecration of their leader in April of 2022 as well. And we as Christians, are in the midst of our 40 days of Lent (plus Sundays). In April we too will have the culmination of Lent with our Holy Week services and remembrances. On Palm Sunday (April 10th) we will remember Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem for Passover. We will be reminded that on this day we called out Hosanna with the crowds, celebrating Jesus as our king. Monday-Wednesday we will remember the last week of Jesus life by reflecting on his teachings and words. Thursday we will celebrate Communion together as we reflect on his last meal with his disciples, and his arrest. Friday we will mourn his death and question our role in it as we will be reminded that in the same way, Hosanna poured from our lips, we also cried out “crucify!” ~ continued on page 2 ~
~ continued from page 1 ~ On Saturday, we will walk the streets of Lancaster for our monthly prayer walk, focusing on prayers that are common to all three major faith traditions. Our brothers and sisters from the Islamic Community Center of Lancaster and Shaarai Shomayim will also be invited to join us for the prayer walk. That evening those who are interested will gather again with our brothers and sisters from the Islamic Center of Lancaster as they break their fast for the day. When they begin their prayers, those who are interested are invited to a time of quiet contemplation and reflection in our church Sanctuary. On Sunday, April 17th, we will begin our day with a sunrise service at Milton Grove Cemetery (6:10AM), followed by finding a breakfast spot for anyone who is interested. At 10AM we will have a glorious Easter Morning celebration, where we will joyfully shout, “He is risen!” Following which, Pastor Mandy, along with protestant pastors around the world will promptly go home for a nap, resting well in the assurance that HE IS RISEN INDEED! Conversations That Matter Lent is often thought of as a time during which we begrudgingly forgo a handful of pleasures, such as giving up soda, coffee, or sweets. This Lenten and Easter season, however, I invite you to approach it as an opportunity -- an opportunity to let go of excuses for failings and shortcomings; to stop hanging on to our inflated sense of self and goodness; and to ask God to show us what we really look like. To do this takes faith in the good news that Jesus Christ overcame sin through his suffering, death, and resurrection. It also takes courage, vulnerability, and community. Beginning Sunday, March 6, and continuing for 15 weeks through Pentecost, please join us Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM on the third floor of LMC as we share in “Conversations That Matter,” – conversations intended to explore the scriptures, delve into our questions and doubts, and thereby deepen our faith and enrich our lives as we journey with Jesus. The topics will be informed by (but not limited to) a resource entitled, “Suffering and Glory: Meditations for Holy Week and Easter” published by Christianity Today International. Please feel free to bring your coffee or other beverage and pull up a chair. Looking forward to getting together. Phil Woffindin and Donna Schilke The Cat in the Hat has NOTHING on Elaine! Clearly, Elaine's wonderful sense of humor is very present and we recognize that twinkle in her eye!
