Indigenous program at Lincoln With an increasing number of Indigenous student enrolments, we’re committed to ensuring that 1 Lincoln is a culturally safe and welcoming space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents. Since 2016, we’ve completed a number of projects and initiatives designed to make Lincoln a place that feels like home to our Indigenous residents, including the display of Indigenous art and acknowledgement of country and the Hambly BBQ reconciliation art project. This year we appointed a resident Indigenous Advisor, 2 ran cultural awareness training for all Residential Advisors and Academic Tutors and we now proudly fly the Aboriginal flag alongside the Australian flag and Lincoln flag, outside our Admin building. A big thank you goes to our inaugural resident Indigenous Advisor, Mai-Sie Crawford-Owers (who hails from Barkindji country in NSW) for 3 her valued advice and contribution to all our initiatives. We’d like to express our gratitude to local Kaurna elders, Aunty Rosemary Wanganeen and Uncle Rod O’Brien, for developing a relationship with Lincoln and also thank Aboriginal artist Narisha Cash (who has Jingili and Mudburra heritage), as well as Dawn Hawthorn Jackson and Uncle Major “Moogy” Sumner (a Ngarrindjeri elder) from Emu Consulting, for 4 their involvement and continued support in these initiatives. We’d also like to thank former Chair of the Lincoln Board, Gregor Ramsay, for donating funds to purchase the Aboriginal flag, as a symbol of his long-time support for Indigenous education. A special mention must also go to Katrina Levesque, a Youth Work intern at Lincoln in 2016, for her pivotal work in establishing the Images (above): 1. LCAA Another year is coming to an end and the LCAA have been endeavouring to reacquaint alumni through several events this year. The New Alumni BBQ held on the East Lawn welcomes the recent leavers from college into the Alumni Association over a drink and a BBQ and is a wonderful way to spend a March evening. The Alumni dinner was held in June this year at Adelaide Oval, a fantastic venue, with Don Manifold giving a speech on behalf of the 1987 alumni in attendance who were celebrating their 30 year anniversary. Keep a look out for next year’s dinner as we plan to have it back at Adelaide Oval and are awaiting the AFL fixtures to be released to finalise the date. Also, this year, two winery tours were organised and both were a great success. The now annual trip to the Barossa to visit Rick Burge for a light lunch with tastings, is becoming a popular event and this year’s stop on the way home was at Greenock Creek. The other winery tour paid a visit to the south side, going down to McLaren Vale in September. With stops at Hugh Hamilton, Fox Creek Wines and Oliver Taranga Vineyards this was another great day. If you’re interested in getting involved with Alumni events for your era, or maybe even helping organise one, please get in touch with the Alumni Association. We’d love to hear from you.
