How to Calculate the Number of Credits
Each subject is identified by a course code composed of six digits. The last digit of a course code
corresponds to the number of credits earned by passing the course.

Example:

Course Title Course Code Number of Credits
 Mathematics: Science Option 565-506 6
 English Language Arts 632-406 6
 Visual Arts Option 668-402 2

The fourth digit of a course code corresponds to the grade level of the course.

Example:

Course Title Course Code Grade Level
Mathematics: Science Option 565-506 Secondary 5
English Language Arts 632-406 Secondary 4
Visual Arts Option 668-402 Secondary 4

Note:
 To obtain the credit attached to a course, a 60% or more in that course is required.
 Students who pass all their secondary 4 classes generally have at least 36 credits completed
at the beginning of secondary 5.

The Achievement Record from the MEES

In Secondary 4 and 5, the grades you receive from RHS are sent to the Ministère de l'Éducation et
de l’Enseignement supérieur (MEES). Students should receive their Ministry Achievement Record
by mail in early July.

Grades indicated on the Achievement Record from the MEES are the final grades. These grades
may be different from the grades found on your report card. This is the case for courses with a
final exam from the Ministry (History, for example).

Example of MEES Achievement Record:

On the MEES Achievement Record, the number of credits for each course is indicated under the
column “CR”.
Example:

The listing on the left-hand side of the MEES Achievement Record gives information regarding the
number of credits accumulated.

Applying to College
In order to be admitted to a program leading to a Diploma of College Studies (DCS), high school
applicants must be successfully completing all of the requirements of a Secondary School Diploma
(SSD) - see p.2.

In addition, each college program may have specific requirements other than the minimum
graduation requirements (for example, Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry). Therefore, it is
important to verify the specific pre-requisites of your program of choice in order to ensure that
you have taken the necessary courses in high school to be considered for admission.

Types of College Programs
There are two types of college programs in Quebec: Pre-University and Technical programs. Below
are the characteristics of each.

                                          Pre-University programs Technical programs

   1. A common general education component which includes the following courses:
 4 courses in the language of instruction and literature
           2 second language courses
           3 humanities courses

          28 to 32 units of pre-university sector courses
 45 to 65 units of technology sector courses

In addition, in order to obtain your DCS, all students must pass the English exit exam and the local
comprehensive assessment related to each program.

Technical Programs
Technical programs train individuals with the practical scientific knowledge to practice a given
trade or profession. Graduates of technical programs generally join the work force after their
studies. However, many choose to pursue their studies in university.

There are options for students in certain college programs to complete a DEC-BAC in conjunction
with a specific university. In these agreements, certain classes completed during collegial studies
are credited to the university program requirements (for example, Nursing).

Technical programs provide a more hands-on practical learning approach compared to the pre-
university programs. In addition, they provide the option to access interesting summer job
opportunities or permit student to work in a specialized filed while going to university.

There are over 130 technical programs in 7 major fields in Quebec:

    Biological Technologies
    Agricultural Technologies
    Community Technologies
    Physical Technologies
    Business Administrative Technologies
    Applied Arts
    Graphic Communications

How to Complete Missing Requirements

Springboard to DCS Program

The Springboard to DCS option provides applicants with the opportunity to complete missing
prerequisite courses, to improve their overall academic record or to explore available programs.
CEGEPS offer a variety of profiles and options as part of the Springboard to DCS program.

 Dawson (Springboard to DCS – Continuing Education)
         Explore CEGEP studies
 Complete prerequisites required for admission to a CEGEP program
 Upgrade academic record to improve chances of admission to a CEGEP program
         Upgrade language skills
 Students may register in the Springboard to a DCS (DEC) program for a maximum
           of three (3) consecutive semesters.
 Students registered in the Springboard to a DCS (DEC) program can be either part-
           time or full-time.

    John Abbott (Pathways programs)
 1-2-semester integration program for students wishing to enter into a Career field
 Explore a CEGEP program at the college
 Complete prerequisites required for admission to a CEGEP program
 Receive support in successfully making the transition from high school to CEGEP

 Vanier (Explorations/Pathways program: Passages, Prerequisites and Transition)
 Passages: for students whose academic record indicates a need for additional
academic support, improvement of oral and written communication skills and
             development of self-confidence and motivation.

Document prepared RHS Guidance Department – 2019-20 12
 Prerequisites: for students who need to acquire pre-requisites for their program
of choice. It is NOT to improve grades in prerequisite courses. Applicants must
demonstrate a strong academic aptitude and good results in previous
Mathematics and Science courses in order to qualify for admission to this profile.
 Transition: for students with at least one full semester of Cegep studies who need
to take Science and Mathematics courses in order to transfer to another program.

Choosing a College
The first step in choosing a college is knowing the program you are interested in, since not all
colleges will offer all programs.

Secondly, research whether certain colleges offer particular profiles or classes that are unique to
that school. For example, some colleges may offer a humanitarian trip or work study as part of the
program.

Factors to take into consideration when choosing a college:
 The nature and diversity of classes
    Extracurricular activities
 Services offered (study centers, counselling, library, etc.)
 Academic support from teachers (availability)
    Geographic proximity and transportation

Great ways to discover more about different colleges:
    Attending Open Houses
    Participating in Guided Tours
 Participating in Student for a Day (registration via College website)
    Visit college websites
 Pickup college brochure or viewbook at the guidance office

Every year, RHS organizes an Education Fair in which representatives from various colleges and
educational institutions are invited to RHS as an opportunity for students to explore programs and
ask questions. This usually takes place in November. Come prepared with your questions!

How to Apply to College

Different application systems exist to apply to college. In order to know which system to use, you
will need to know which colleges you want to apply to. It is possible to apply to more than one
college so long as the colleges are NOT on the same application system. For example, you cannot
apply to Vanier and John Abbott, but you can apply to Vanier and Dawson.

Below is an overview of the application systems:

How Is My Application Analyzed?

Colleges look at Secondary 4 results from your MEES Achievement Record as well as Secondary 5
results for Terms 1 and 2. Secondary 4 and 5 grades are each weighted at about 50%. The analysis
looks at the following criteria:

 General average from Secondary 4 and 5
    Deviation from the mean
    English grades
 Science and Math grades (Math, Science, Physics, Chemistry) if program requirement
 Grades in classes related to program chosen
 Number of credits attached to a course (bonus if 64 to 84 credits total)

Admissions are always conditional to passing the course by the end of the school year. Colleges
may require minimal grades to be achieved for particular courses. For example, some colleges may
require at least 75% in Math for those entering Science programs.

What is Vocational Education?
Vocational training programs are 1 to 2 year long courses that focus on learning practical and
specialized skills to prepare students to enter the job market in a specific skilled trade.

Successful completion of a vocational training program leads to a diploma of vocational studies
(DVS or DEP in French). For some DVSs, students can upgrade their skills by completing an
attestation of vocational specialization (AVS) for a period varying between three and six months.
These official diplomas, which are internationally recognized, are issued by the Ministère de
l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur du Québec.
