A Spirited Volunteer - Fran Neves A bright smile, a crown of shining curls and delightful dimples, announce the presence of Fran Neves, our volunteer-in-focus this month. You may have met Fran through one of several community groups: Woman’s Club of Lincoln (past president), Lincoln Chamber of Commerce (representing nonprofits), Downtown Lincoln Association, Poets Club of Lincoln, Native Daughters of the Golden West, St. Joseph Catholic Church (past choir member and teacher) and assisting husband Frank with the annual Toys for Tots campaign. Fran also represented the Lincoln community on the City’s Library Advisory Board until May of this year. Fran has been a FOLL Board member for many years, most recently as FOLL's Vice President. [Pictured: Fran at a Lincoln City Fran says she has “worked harder than ever!” since retiring 17 years Council meeting with Paul Joiner, ago and decided it is time to pull back. She promises she has the council member and Mary Nader, same vigor as ever. FOLL President.] Born in San Francisco, Fran earned degrees in English, a lifetime elementary education credential and a library credential at San Jose State College (now SJSU). She taught elementary grades in her 25-year teaching career in Alum Rock Union School District and subbed in other districts. Fran and her husband of 55 ½ years, Frank, a retired social worker, met in Newman Club at SJSU, graduated the same day and married two weeks later. They live in Twelve Bridges. Fran is mother to three daughters, with 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and a growing extended family (living in Arizona, Minnesota and Northern California). Now she will focus more of her enthusiasm to family and her own enjoyments: water exercise, painting, birding, and as volunteer librarian. And, Fran will continue to tend to her rose garden (she can name each of her garden’s 50 rose varieties including Just Joey and Barbra Streisand). Fran's first library work was as a high school ‘page’ at the South San Francisco Public Library. Her volunteer work at Lincoln Public Library began more than a decade ago at the Carnegie branch with book giveaways. Now she is archiving our library’s documents that date back to 1909. She organized and manages the Lincoln Christian Academy library where she teaches monthly birding workshops. Topics have included birds of the bible, how to tell the difference between crows and ravens, or how to spot burrowing owls. In 2017 Fran was named Lincoln Chamber of Commerce's Woman of the Year and Grand Marshal of the July 4 Lincoln Parade. She recently started painting classes (water color and acrylic), and continues birding, poetry and as a St. Joseph church lector and Eucharistic minister. [Pictured with Ian Carah in his 1957 Ford Thunderbird.] FOLL appreciates all volunteers and extends a special thanks to Fran Neves. But that’s not all. If you should wake up to a herd of pink flamingos in your yard, that’s the work of Fran Neves, Lincoln’s self- proclaimed Flamingo person, aka ‘flamingo flocker.’

What is Winter Solstice? Find Out with the Library's Online Resources For those living in the Northern Hemisphere, December 21 marks the beginning of the longest night of the year — and, of course, the shortest day. The date and time of Winter Solstice vary by the year, though it typically falls between December 19 and 22. Winter Solstice is an astronomical phenomenon that occurs when the Earth's axial tilt is farthest away from the sun. It derives its name from the Latin word "solstitium," which means "Sun standing still." The word describes how the sun appears on the earth's horizon to observers. It marks the transition period at which days begin getting longer in the Northern Hemisphere and shorter in the Southern Hemisphere, and ushers in the Winter season. The winter solstice is marked with ceremonies and celebrations across the globe. In Ireland, people convene at a 5,000-year-old gravesite called Newgrange, where they wait for a chance to see the sunrise lighting up the tomb. At Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England, people similarly come together to watch the sun being cast over the famous prehistoric monument. China marks the start of winter with the Dongzhi festival, during which families come together and enjoy rice balls called tangyuan. The treat is said to bring prosperity and unity. Some Scandinavian and Germanic peoples in northern Europe celebrate with Yule, a day of gathering and gift giving.
