FEBRUARY 2020 page 02 Reading Together Why early literacy matters In the first 3 years of life your child’s brain grows to around 80% of its adult size, making this the prime time to nurture their learning & development. Reading and talking to your baby stimulates their brain and their imagination. Reading together encourages their focus and concentration, and emphasises the sounds used to create and develop their speech. Pointing to the pictures on the page, or naming things around you, as you say the word, helps their understanding of words, concepts and context. Literacy isn’t just about books, it is the whole reading, writing, speaking and listening circle, that is the foundation to learning. Come along to our Rattle & Rhyme and Storytime sessions and we'll share tips on sharing stories together. Taylah, a Summer Reading winner with Sarah Barossa Library Summer Reading Program Our Summer Reading Program is a popular way for children to keep reading over the long summer break.
