Growth Mindset Teaching students how to learn is as important as teaching them content because acquiring both the right learning strategies and possessing a growth mindset are essential in promoting lifelong learning.
Growth Mindset • Their brain is a muscle which keeps growing and there is no limit to their learning capacity • The difference between a fixed and growth mindset; • How mindsets can affect their learning.
Growth Mindset Students will learn: • Power of not knowing yet • Mistakes are opportunities for learning • Feedback – Receive, don’t reject it • Setting S.M.A.R.T goals
Your Support for Your Child • Unconditional love; believe in your child • Avoid comparing your child to others. Parents – what else can you can do • Find time every day to talk to your children • Take an interest in your child’s school life – interesting anecdotes? Friendships? CCAs? • Help your child think through problems she may be facing in school and help her build her resilience/self-discipline/school values (I4Cs) • Let your child take ownership of her own learning by getting her to share with you what she has learnt, troubles she has faced and how she has overcome them
How can we support our daughters in their learning of English at P3?
What Can Parents and Guardians Do To Support their Child/Ward in their learning? • Provide a rich language environment at home – Make a wide variety of English language reading materials available at home (e.g. newspapers, non-fiction books, recipe books, poetry books). • Engage her in meaningful talk – For instance, ask her what she thinks about a movie that she watched, or a meal that your family had, or about current affairs. • Role model good English – Read and write often in front of and with your child/ward. – Speak in standard English whenever possible • Reinforce skills and strategies learnt in school – Effective language learning requires frequent exposure to listening, speaking, reading and writing opportunities and activities.
What Specific Ways Can Parents or Guardians Support Learning? ✓ Visit the library regularly with your child/ward ✓ Have a wide variety of good reading materials in your home ✓ Find out what your child/ward is interested in, discuss what and find books that are related to those interests ✓ Allow your child/ward to choose books to read and re-read ✓ Read to and with your child (or, have your child read to you) ✓ Talk to your child about what she reads and observes around her ✓ Ask her about the STELLAR units that she is currently learning in school

Math Tips for Parents • Work and communicate closely with your child’s Maths Teacher. • Follow up on homework – ask questions that guide without telling them the answer. • Train your child to show proper and detailed working steps. • Train your child to check their answers. • Relate Math concepts to daily life examples eg. Is the table longer or shorter than one metre? • Play mathematical games / puzzles. • Provide a positive environment – encourage and praise your child’s effort.
Tips for parents When your child encounters difficulties with homework, you can help by asking questions that guide, without telling them what to do.
How can we support our daughters in learning Mother Tongue at P3?
Joy of Reading • Inculcate the habit of reading widely – Weekly borrowing of MT books – Read MT newspapers – Read together with your child, ask questions when reading to check understanding and also develop critical thinking skills – Encourage them to use the dictionary to check up words that they are not sure
Live the Language • Converse with your child in MT • Watch TV programs/ videos in the MT – Tamil: Vasantham channel, news at 8.30pm – Malay: Medic Kid (Tuesday – 6 pm) – Chinese: Channel 8 weekends mornings • Tuning in to a MT radio channel
Support your child • Regular check on the child’s work • Understand child’s needs • Lots of encouragement • Monitor your child’s stress level. • Cooperation and collaboration between teacher and parents.
How can I support my daughter’s learning for MT? • To help the child to complete and hand in assignments/homework. •Read and practise spelling at home •Apply strategies taught by teachers when completing assignments/homework •Revise consistently with your child

Pease take note The tentative dates for the GEP Screening and Selection Exercises for P3 students are as follows: a) GEP Screening Exercise - 23 August 2019 (Friday) English Language and Mathematics papers b) GEP Selection Exercise - 15, 16 October 2019 (Tuesday, Wednesday) English Language, Mathematics papers and General Ability (for shortlisted students) More details will be provided at a later date in a separate letter.
