A great start to 2021…..
What a fantastic start to Term 1, 2021! Over the holidays and at the beginning of this year, we were sad to say goodbye to some staff members, students and families and we wish them all the best in their new roles or towns. I would also like to welcome Miss Anderson and Miss Jasmine to the team at Pentland SS. They have both settled in well and are an absolute asset to our school. Cross Country We have started our Cross Country training each morning at 8.15am, you can probably see our running starts completing lap after lap of the school grounds! The Dalrymple Cluster Carnival is on Friday 19th March at Homestead School. I am very excited to see our students participate and try their best…..and hopefully we will bring home a few ribbons and medals! NAPLAN Our school will be participating in NAPLAN this year and it will be the first year we are completing it online. Students in years 3 and 5 will do a number of tests – Numeracy, Writing, Reading and Language Conventions. The tests will be conducted between 11th - 21st May, 2021. Our school will develop a specific timetable during these dates. School Leader Next week on parade our year 5/6 students will present their school leadership speeches in the aim of becoming our next school leader. Usually this process will take place in term 4 and be announced at Presentation Night, however this year we are doing it in term 1 for the year, and again in term 4 for 2022. If you are interested in listening to their speeches, please come along! Vegetable Garden Our Chaplain, Rob, is beginning to reorganise and plan our vegetable garden. If you have any surplus seeds, seedlings, soil, mulch or gardening equipment you would like to donate, please contact Chappy. We are hoping to sell our vegetables in th upcoming months to the community. Yours in learning Laura Peagham Principal
Kindy What a great start to Kindy we have had. Its hard to believe that we are in week 5 already. This year at Kindy we have 4 very enthusiastic boys and they are definetly keeping me on my toes. The first few weeks we had a theme “All About Me”, it was so we could all get to know one another, see what our likes and dislikes are. We also explored what is our favourite food and what were our hobbies. We know each other a lot better now. We had our home corner set up cooking was a popular thing to do. The boys love doing construction, lego and playing with blocks.
Classroom Capers P-2 I cannot believe we are half way through Term 1, it is true what they say, “Time flies when you’re having fun”. In HASS, this term the Prep children has been learning about, what my family history is. To learn this the children have been creating family trees and ordering a variety of historical events in the order that they happen. During English, the Prep children have been working on a different storybook each week and doing a variety of activities each day, which have been getting the students to gain the knowledge of where the story is set and beginning to learn what structure makes up a story. The Year 1 and 2 students in HASS have been learning about family and how daily life have changed over time. During the unit, so far we have been doing identifying different events, which come from the past or the present. We have also been identifying the stages that we go through from baby to an Adult. Throughout English theYear 1 and 2 students have been learning about the makeup of a story. They have been identifying the structure, characters, setting, what the problem is and how the problem gets resolved. So far a crowd favourite has been the text ‘Blossom Possom’. So let me leave this classroom wrap up with a Joke; how do all oceans say hello to each other? A Wave! Tom Nicholson Teacher
Year 1/2 English I think Mr Gumpy is silly. He let animals in a car. This reminds me of when my dog got in the car. Jeanne Year 2 I think the animals were nice. They pushed the car. Izzy Year 2 I think that the girl is helpful. She had to push the car. This reminds me of when Charlotte helped me. Ashtyn Year 1 I think the girl is crazy. The girl did get out of the car. This reminds me of when I got bogged in the mud. Mackenzie Year 1
Prep science this term was about the needs of living things; and using their senses like a scientist, to see if those needs were being met. Our little flower fairies rose to the challenge of keeping and tending a myriad of insect eggs, pupa and chrysalis to see what they would become. They supplied food, water, shelter and air to our classroom pets everyday. We were delighted when our hatched 28 spot lady bugs as food for our assassin bugs which hatched at the perfect time to devour them. Our shiny silver chrysalis turned into a crow butterfly while the very ordinary looking chrysalis became a fabulous birdwing butterfly. And to our surprise the very odd egg sack belonged to a delightful praying mantis. We all had such fun in science this term.
Yr 3 to 6 Classroom What an awesome start to the year, I can’t believe we are already half way through the term! In English, grade 3/4 have been practising their persuasive writing skills, the students have been applying the persuasive writing Hamburger structure. Likewise, the grade 3/4 students have also been practising using the many important features of persuasive writing. Some of these features being exaggeration, rhetorical questions and high modality words. We have some very talented persuaders in the making, watch out parents! Grade 5/6 Science have been studying the behavioural and structural features of plants and animals. Every Friday the 5/6 students apply their scientific knowledge through an outdoor field investigation. Within these outdoor investigations, the students study up close and personal the many structural and behavioural features of animals and plants. In maths, both grades have been working with fractions and decimals. One morning, the students applied their mathematical and physical abilities. Each student was timed doing three small physical challenges. These being, 10 push-ups, 5 burpees and a 50m dash. The students then used their knowledge on decimals to work out who the quickest athlete was for each challenge and the overall winner for all 3 challenges.

Welcome New Staff Miss Anderson and Miss Jasmine Hi everyone, my name is Jasmin Anderson and as most of you may know, I am the grade 3 – 6 teacher for term 1 and 2. I have grown up on the Tablelands although about 1 year ago I moved to my family cattle station just outside of Charters Towers. Not long after completing my Bachelor’s degree of Primary Education, I was presented with the opportunity to be a teacher for Pentland State School, this being my first official teaching job! I now live in Pentland and just like Charters Towers, I have quickly fallen in love with the community. My favourite thing to do is anything that involves physically activity or creativity. As a teacher, I aim to create a safe, fun and proactive learning environment, where my students are given many opportunities to learn through a variety of ways. I believe that learning should not only happen inside of the classroom but outside as well, learning should be fun, realistic and engaging! Hello everyone. My name is Jasmine Boon but the children call me Miss Jasmine. I am new to Pentland state school but I’m absolutely loving it already. I live in Charters Towers so I travel out in the morning then straight back to Charters as I’m also the Co-ordinator at RHSS school aged care. What I’m loving the most about Pentland is the quality time I get to spend with each child. You definitely don’t get to do that at bigger schools. My favourite time is always Arts and Craft and you can bet I’ll make a bigger mess then the children! Thank you so much for welcoming me into your beautiful school.

We will notify you shortly with a date. Thankyou Kylee Jenkins P and C President Chappies Corner On the 24th of February 2020, I began as a School Chaplain at Pentland. What a year of change. Thank you all for welcoming me into the school community. Young children are such a delight and ask some fantastic questions like 'why is your hair grey and some is falling out?' One young student still forming words calls me Crappy! I try not to laugh aloud at myself in these times, it's so funny. This year of 2021 is looking great and there is a different social dynamic in the school with new student leadership. Country kids are warm and kind reflecting on great parenting. We all young and old have our moments of melt-down but I'm thankful to be here in this school community. Robert Bauman School Chaplain
