MARCH 2021, ISSUE 4 S.T.E.A.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. The intent is to combine two or more of these disciplines to answer questions, solve problems, and create projects. As an educational philosophy, it is designed to teach skills and subjects in a way that resembles real life. It creates an interdisciplinary mindset rather than focusing solely on one of the fields. This can be inspired in the home simply by encouraging children’s natural curiosity. Encourage children to question, experiment, and play. Some craft sticks and a glue gun can turn into the next Eiffel tower. Some cardboard, tubing, and medicine syringes can become a mechanical claw leading to a new type of prosthetic hand. Simply allowing children access to inexpensive craft supplies or even basic circuitry is enough to foster a lifelong love of learning. The most important thing is encouragement and questioning. “Why do you think that happened?” or “What do you think will happen next?” or “What do you think we can do differently?” are open-ended questions that will get your children thinking and using the scientific method in a fun and comfortable way.
