PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Kia ora Birdwood whanau, I hope you’re all taking care of yourselves as we head into mid-year, which is always a busy time e.g. winter sports, public holidays (Matariki Holiday 24 June our kura will be closed) not to mention COVID, winter ills and everything else we are having to contend with at the moment. MATARIKI - This week we begin our Matariki celebrations, with Friday 24 June set to be our first national holiday to formally recognize the Māori New Year. Traditionally a time for giving thanks to the Gods and acknowledging the spirits of those who have passed, Matariki is also a time for celebrating where we live, and how we live, as we grow together as one people. Whatever you’re doing to celebrate, please take some time to think about and cherish those within your whanau. TERM 2 REPORTING - Mid Year Reports will be sent home Wednesday 6th July. Our Parent Teacher Student learning conferences will be held in Term 3, Week 1. LEARNING CONVERSATIONS 28th July 1.00pm-7.00pm - This is an opportunity for you to hear from your child/ren and their teacher about their progress as a learner at Birdwood School, we hope that you can make the time to attend as this means the world to your child/ren when their whanau show an interest in their learning and to find out about their next steps in learning. Information on how to book on for these conferences will be in the next newsletter and will also accompany the reports sent home. Nga Mihi Viv Carr Acting Principal

Board elections occur every three years and will occur this year in September. Over the next few weeks we will share more information about what the Board does at BWS and BOARD ELECTIONS what is involved in the election process. This week we have included an explanation from WHY JOIN, AND WHY WENEEDYOU! the website School Board Elections. School board members are active leaders in our schools. They have an important role of supporting strong professional leadership and ensuring effective teaching for all students through informed governance. Parents/caregivers and people in the wider community can be parent representatives. School boards need to represent the diversity of their school communities to ensure a bright future for all our children. The school board elections are the opportunity to vote for candidates who will make a positive difference for children’s education. We need more people willing to use their skills and experiences for the benefit of students! "Board members are entrusted by the community to ensure the success of our schools and a bright future for our children. We need an education system where all children are expected to succeed and one where we all take shared responsibility in ensuring this happens. As a member of a school board you can make things happen - you can make a difference." • For more information read the Community member guide to the role of school boards and check out our information for parents on the NZSTA website - Lorraine Kerr, NZSTA President https://www.schoolboardelections.org.nz/becoming-a-board-member
‘Our Akoanga, Our Learning’ In Te Henga this week we had lots of students completing their Hell’s Pizza Reading Challenge! Well done and keep up the hard work! In Digital Club this week we made pizzas and chocolate chip cookies. We are learning that an algorithm is a set of instructions just like a recipe. We made some delicious food! In the Junior classes this week we completed a Matariki rotation. The students learned about the stars of Matariki, practised poi, and used rakau sticks. Here is a look at our Matariki art.
