A message from: Jill Carrie, Carol Chan, Colleen Doyle, Amber Moore, & Emily Summers Let's connect and grow women's hockey Hi {{ contact.FIRSTNAME }}, As we haven’t been inundated with April showers, we hope everyone has been taking advantage of the good weather. This month, we are excited to highlight the growing DMV ball hockey community. Remember to join us on May 23 for our next event! Faceoff on the Green: Sunday, May 23 at 10:00 a.m. East Potomac Mini Golf in DC. Trade in your hockey stick for a putter, we’re playing miniature golf! We’ll follow our time on the green with a socially distanced picnic at Hains Point. Register here. Hope to see you soon! Ball hockey or ‘dek hockey’ has exploded in popularity in major metropolitan areas over the last several years. In the DMV, the Washington Capitals helped grow the sport by renovating several rinks in Maryland and Virginia. Ball hockey is played on foot (you run) and with an orange ball! Everything else is pretty much the same ole’ hockey game. With less equipment (gloves, stick, shin guards, helmet) and outdoor rinks, ball hockey is also less expensive to play! There are teams and leagues across the DMV, a few are highlighted below: DCHL Rockville, MD DC Hockey League (DCHL) is a coed ball hockey league made up of players in the DMV area. Games are played indoors at the Michael & Son Rockville Sportsplex in Rockville, Maryland. DCHL offers divisions ranging from Rec (which caters to new hockey players) to D1 (which has a good mix of experienced hockey players that have a college hockey background or high-level tournament play). Over 150 women play in the Sunday and Wednesday leagues. DCHL is looking to create the area’s only
all-women league in the coming years. Ball hockey is a great way to get more hockey in at a fraction of the cost. If you are interested in joining DCHL or would like more information, please reach out to Chris at commissioner@playdchl.com. DC Street Hockey Northern Virginia DC Street Hockey (DCSH) is the premier ball hockey league in the DMV for the past 20 years. DCSH games are played outdoors at the Hammond Rink in Alexandria, Virginia. DCSH has numerous women across all leagues and has been instrumental in the development of many of the travel team's players. DCSH hosts several coed tournaments throughout the year including Spring Classic, Turkey Tourney, and Winter Classic. DCSH is also a member of the National Ball Hockey League (NBHL). The Stanley Cupcakes women's team has played in the DCSH Sunday league for years. Any women interested in joining a DCSH league or tournament can reach out to Wayne Barrett at wayne.barrett@dcstreethockey.com. Check out the DCSH website, DCSH Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Bay to Bay with CBL The Chesapeake Bay Lightning (CBL) traveled down to Tampa to compete in the 2021 Adult Women’s National Championships April 22-25. While they came close to total victory, winning their first three games in the round-robin tournament, the team fell Saturday to a Detroit team in the semifinals that then went on to win it all.
