1. OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTNERS AND SPONSORS The initiative "Leonardo 4 Children" was launched by the Carano 4 Children Foundation, with the support of numerous partners and sponsors, with the aim of stimulating children's creativity by supporting their artistic and scientific skills and creating a cultural bond and solidarity between children and young people of greater and lesser opportunities, showing that all children have similar potential to create and become 'geniuses'. 2. PURPOSE The "Leonardo 4 Children" 2020 initiative is dedicated to the theme of sustainability and the fight against climate change. If Leonardo were to be reborn 500 years after his death, he would probably devote his creative and inventive energies to trying to understand and solve this serious problem. The flagship initiative « Leonardo 4 Children 2020: Climate Action » has the following objectives: • Stimulate the creativity and participation of European children and youth on art and science topics, inspired by the example of Leonardo da Vinci, to contribute to their balanced development and psycho-physical well-being; • Support children - primarily in developing countries with focus on orphans or abandoned children - to develop their artistic and scientific skills and develop their personality, and help them to overcome post-traumatic stress; • Create a cultural and solidarity link between children with higher and those with lower opportunities, such as between European children and children in developing countries outside Europe, showing that all children have similar potential to create and be “genius”. The initiative is supported by the “Leonardo 4 Children” Advisory Board which includes 15 professionals acting pro-bono and on a personal basis, of five different nationalities with extensive multi-disciplinary experience in children’s education, culture, music, science, development aid and philanthropy. 4
3. BENEFICIARIES The funds and material raised by the initiative will be entirely used for education in art and science of children in need, such as orphans, abandoned children, children without parents, sick children, children in refugee camps. For this purpose, these projects have been selected via an open call in 2019: a) Art and music for children in refugee camps in Jordan, UNICEF. www.unicef.org UNICEF’s child-friendly Makani (which translates as ‘My Space’) centres provide an integrated set of services to children in refugee camps and informal settlements, including learning support, community-based child protection, early childhood development, adolescent and youth participation, life skills and innovation labs. In Azraq and Za’atari Refugee Camps (Jordan), there are 22 Makani centres serving nearly 20,000 children. UNICEF’s new musical therapy programme “Musiqati” in Makani centres is helping Syrian refugee children to heal and teach them musical communication techniques to contribute to the strengthening of social cohesion among children and their families. Music therapy provides a safe space for children to be creative and share their emotions through words, harmonies, rhythm and melodies. In the programme, children learn free expression and group communication through solos, duets, trios and groups. It also enhances their decision-making abilities. UNICEF Ambassador, Jordanian pianist and composer Zade Dirani supports Musiqati in Makani centres. After playing with children, he explains: “Evidence shows that music therapy is 5
of great benefit to children in Makani centres. It is wonderful to see boys and girls laughing, playing music and just being children again. Musiqati’s goal is to provide a music therapy model that is both effective and sustainable and can reach thousands of vulnerable Syrian children in Jordan with the healing power of music. We don’t want to stop here. This programme could help children all over the world who have been traumatized by conflict, loss and displacement.” b) Art, theatre & science for street and slum children in Kenya, Action for Children in Conflict (AfCiC) and Fondazione Pianoterra. www.actionchildren.or.ke www.fondazionepianoterra.net Street and slum children are the most deprived and under-privileged members of our society. They lack proper food, accommodation and education. AfCiC with support from Carano 4 Children seeks to change this narrative by breaking this vicious cycle of poverty through harnessing the skills and knowledge that the children have. AfCiC will work with Carano 4 Children to promote science, art and music project that will facilitate the transformation of the community by empowering the children with skills in photography, art, theater, dance and storytelling. The project will use Leonardo 4 Children’s experience with the Leonardo Da Vinci fables to promote children’s creativity using African fables. Science will be applied with a view of improving access to water, managing the scarce water available and reducing water wash and water-borne diseases. Using science and technology the children will help to keep a clean environment, recycle as a way of improving the living standards and welfare. The project is participatory and led by the children: their perspectives are the foundation of sustainability and long-term elimination of poverty. Pianoterra Foundation promotes culture as an instrument of emancipation of people living in marginalized and difficult contexts. Through its projects, the Foundation supports mainly mothers, children and teenagers, creating synergies with other organizations in Italy and worldwide. c) Art and science for orphans and abandoned children in Ukraine, Charity May. 6
There are more than 100,000 children in the orphanage system in Ukraine without parental care. The situation in the country is such that state funding is sufficient only for basic needs and provision, such as accommodation meals and the most necessary things. The main aim of Charity May fund is to help children who are unable to fully develop and enjoy life and adaptation of children from orphanages to real life in community. The project “Leonardo 4 Children of Ukraine” will support children in need, including orphans, abandoned children and children without parental care in up to 80 orphanages in Ukraine, implemented by Charity May. The purpose of the initiative is to educate children to develop creative skills, develop teamwork and sense of belonging to society, improve their well-being and joy of life, positively evolve towards adult life and to overcome post-traumatic stress via educational activities in art and science. Other projects are supported via specific “Leonardo 4 Children” initiatives and events in favour of children in need via art & science, such as: Support to orphans and abandoned children and care-leavers in Kyrgyzstan, in cooperation with Oasis Oasis Kyrgyzstan focuses on young people who have been brought up in childcare institutions and vulnerable women in marginalized communities. It supports young people as they prepare for the transition to independent life as adults, so that they are able to contribute to society and are economically empowered. The foundation and Oasis Kyrgyzstan partner in helping children in need become independent and positively contribute to society, with focus on education on art and music. The project “Leonardo 4 Children” in Kyrgyzstan focuses on working with four orphanages where more than 350 orphans are brought up. Our mission in Kyrgyzstan is to help reveal talented children in orphanages and help them to develop their talents through different trainings in art, music, life skills. Support to children via play therapy at Meyer Children's Hospital in Florence, Italy Play is an integral part of care at Meyer Children's Hospital: it reduces stress, alleviates pain and fear and guarantees the patients' right to remain kids even while hospitalized. These are the 7
objectives of the "Play Therapy" project managed by the Meyer Foundation: a range of playful and creative activities that flank the hospital's commitment to providing the highest quality healthcare possible. From play and theatre in the playroom to colorful furnishings, the joyfulness of clowns, the snuggly dogs of the pet therapy program, the cultivation of a vegetable garden, and the relaxing notes of live musicians, play therapy is a fundamental aspect of the hospital's holistic vision for paediatric care. Support to children in schools in suburban areas via art and music, in cooperation with MUS-E Italy The MUS-E initiative was created by Yehudi Menuhin in 1993. It is based on the idea that music and arts should be part and parcel of daily education and accessible to all. In its present form, MUS-E is targeted at primary schools which are facing the challenge of educating a growing multicultural group of children, many of whom come from migrant or disadvantaged families and are at risk of social exclusion or other societal problems. In the presence of classroom teachers, professional artists actively engaged in MUS-E introduce and share various forms of art (singing, dance, music, movement, drama, visual and multimedia arts, etc.). Thanks to this collective work, the MUS-E program encourages dialogue and togetherness, while awakening children’s sense of creativity, empathy and resilience. 8
