Lee Evans MP MEMBER FOR HEATHCOTE Community Newsletter – February 2018 THE HEATHCOTE HERALD from Welcome to this 21st edition of the “Heathcote Herald”. After the Royal National Park fire emergency last month there was an outpouring of community support for our valiant emergency service personnel and volunteers. I was honoured to acknowledge their exemplary efforts in Parliament. The NSW government committed $38 million over four years to ensure that local services are well resourced to support them in their critical work. 100 projects of new or upgraded RFS This financial year alone saw 140 new firefighting vehicles and almost ts that you can have confidence this infrastructure across NSW. Road Safety Plan 2021 The NSW Government this month introduced a Road Safety Plan 2021 which includes a range of measures aimed at reducing the road toll. The measures announced include: • Expanding the mandatory alcohol interlock program to include all mid-range drink driving offenders. An interlock is a breath testing device fitted to a car’s ignition system. The driver must provide a negative sample for the vehicle to start; • Police will be given the power to issue on the spot fines and licence suspensions for low range drink driving. This ensures swift and certain penalties; • Amending legislation to allow camera technology to be used to enforce mobile phone offences; • 11 additional heavy vehicle average speed camera locations, including in metropolitan Sydney, to address risks associated with greater truck movements; • An initial $125 million for a new Saving Lives on Country Roads program including safety barriers, tactile line markings, wide centre line, safety upgrades of high risk curves and $11 million for pedestrian and cyclist safety improvements including traffic calming measures, pedestrian refuges and crossings to keep cyclists and walkers safe. A review into driving on prescription drugs has been requested by April and the NSW Sentencing Council will be tasked with reporting back on sentencing of repeat traffic offenders who may pose an ongoing risk to the community. For more information visit: www.towardszero.nsw.gov.au/roadsafetyplan Toll Relief: Free Rego For Drivers Toll road users will soon be eligible for free car registration as part of the NSW Government’s commitment to tackle cost of living pressures. The scheme will save the majority of eligible motorists $358 a year on registration costs, with potential savings of up to $715 a year. Toll road users will be eligible for free vehicle registration if they spend more than $25 a week, on average, over a 12 month period. The rego rebate will be available for all standard privately registered cars, utes, 4 wheel-drives and motorcycles from July 1, 2018. (Private motor vehicles weighing more than 2795kg, such as trucks, are not included in the scheme.) The scheme will apply to private drivers who use existing toll roads and will apply to any new toll roads in the future. The scheme will also be backdated, so eligible motorists will enjoy free vehicle registration if they’ve spent more than $25 a week from July 1, 2017. Drivers who use the M5 will continue to have access to the Cashback scheme. For more information visit: www.nsw.gov.au/news-and-events/news/free-rego-for-frequent-sydney-toll-road-users/ Kids Under 5 To Get Free Flu Jab Children between six months and five years old are now eligible for free flu jabs this year. The $3.5million influenza vaccination program offered by the NSW Government follows last year’s severe flu season where there were more than 12,000 confirmed cases in children under five. Many more were likely to not have been tested. More than 400,000 children across the State are eligible to receive better protection not only for them, but also for their families and the wider community. We all know how horrendous the flu can be and this is especially hard on the smallest members of our families. Little kids are also most likely to spread the flu so a free flu jab will not only keep them safe, but will protect others they come into contact with. Sutherland Hospital Welcomes 24 New Interns I was pleased to welcome 24 medical graduates to Sutherland Hospital in January. Across the State, 999 interns (up from 992 in 2017), commenced their new positions, representing the NSW Government’s commitment to introduce new doctors into the health system with the state leading the country in terms of funding and conditions. NSW guarantees intern positions to all domestic medical graduates for NSW universities. NSW also provides internships to many graduates from interstate universities and, where possible, international full-fee paying medical graduates. This year is particularly significant for the program with 20 Aboriginal doctors commencing their internship. I would like to wish our interns every success as they progress their careers.
