It is so important to attend school, because if you are not in school you are not learning. For this reason, we here at Chiefess Kapi‘olani Elementary School feel it’s important to celebrate perfect and almost perfect attendance. That is why on Friday, January 25, 2019, students in grades K – 6, who had 2 or less absences during the 2nd quarter, were given the opportunity to participate in an EXCITING activity. Students got to choose between making healthy snacks, zumba, jello-play doh, crafts, and sports! What made the activity even more exciting was that about 225 students, which is about 60% of our students, were able to participate because they had two or less absences during quarter 2. Mahalo to our awesome helpers… Mrs. Grace, our school counselor, for planning This awesome event. Principal’s Message Aloha Chiefess Kapiʻolani Elementary School Ohana! The long awaited Labor of Love Project, sponsored by the AFL-CIO, took place this past Saturday, February 2, from 8:00 to 12:00! We had about 225 volunteers from the labor unions, our community, and our school all coming together to help beautify and improve our campus. We painted various projects, installed and covered bulletin boards all around campus so we are able to show off the terrific work our students do in their classes, and soon we will be installing basketball systems. January was a busy month and February promises to be just as exciting! In addition to our outstanding in school activities, CKES will once again be participating in the Hawaii County Parks and Recreation Track and Field Program! Second grade teacher, Ms. Kaylee Rapoza, is coaching our team of about 40 student athletes and they will be competing on February 9 & 23 at the Waiakea High School Ken Yamase Track and Field Facility. Many may not know this, but Ms. Rapoza was a 4 year cross country athlete at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, so our students are fortunate to have her as their coach. Please stop by Waiakea High School to cheer them on! Please join me in congratulating our second grade Teacher, Ms. Jackie Kubo Luna and special education inclusion teacher, Mrs. Hwa Hee Sohn for earning the distinction of becoming National Board Certified Teachers! In addition to their daily teacher duties, Ms. Kubo Luna and Mrs. Sohn spent many hours studying, learning, and improving their practices in order to demonstrate they meet the highest standards of our profession. They are examples of lifelong learners and show the commitment it takes to successfully meet the changing needs of all our students. Recently, I have been fortunate to have in-depth conversations with multiple parents. We discussed our school’s strengths as well as areas for improvement and I can now take their input and share it with our faculty and staff. Please contact me at 974-4160 or by email at gregg_yonemori@notes.k12.hi.us if you have any questions, concerns, or would like just to discuss our school. Important Dates February 2, 2019 Labor of Love Project Day February 7, 2019 Kick off for Jump Rope for Heart February 8, 2019 Labor of Love Thank You Assembly February 9 & 23, 2019 Track & Field Day at Waiakea High School February 12, 2019 Teacher Institute Day – No school for students February 18, 2019 President’s Day Holiday – No School Robotics What a great way to start 2019! On Jan. 4, 2019 our Kōlea Robotics teams participated in the last qualifying VEX IQ Challenge event of the season at the University of Hawaii at Hilo . Teams Gray and Blue challenged themselves during interviews with guest engineers and with the Skills Challenge events. Over 30 teams participated in this event, allowing our students to network and problem solve with students from other schools. Having recently changed the design of the robot, our engineers were able to easily navigate through the challenge. Both teams faced lots of challenges throughout the season, but each time they rose to overcome them with a great spirit optimism. Their spirit caught the attention of the judges and Kōlea Team 966B was awarded the Energy Award for 2018-2019! Our students have grown so much and are still eager to learn more! This is just the beginning of their robotics journey. Congratulations, engineers! Kōlea Pride! 3
VP’s Message Aloha Kolea and Kolea ‘Ohana, January seemed to pass by very quickly and although I was at Kea’au Middle School for most of the month, I was very happy to hear that so many Kolea were recipients of 2nd quarter awards. Congratulations! As we move into February there are many exciting things in store. For example, on February 7th, we will be celebrating our kick-off for the American Heart Association Jump Rope for Heart. Students will be bringing home pledge forms and learning more about the importance of keeping active and healthy. In keeping with the theme of health, I’d like to remind all parents that we do not allow students to bring gum, candy, and soda to school, as all snacks should meet our health guidelines. A copy of our snack policy can be found under the wellness section on our school website. Another important thing taking place right now is the collection of our School Quality Surveys. All surveys were sent home with your child at the beginning of January. We ask that you complete the survey and mail it back in the postage paid envelope or return the survey in the envelope you received to the school office or your child’s teacher. Those surveys will help us to know how you feel our school is doing with respect to safety, wellbeing, satisfaction, and involvement/engagement. All surveys are due by March 15, 2019. Mahalo, Kimberly Castillo Vice Principal Support Recycling at Our School Campus We continue to participate in the Kamali’i Flowers “Penny a Pound” newspaper recycling program. Help not only Chiefess Kapi’olani Elementary, but also the environment as well by dropping off your old newspapers in the recycling bin located in front of the second grade classrooms, as you exit the school. Just lift the lid and put the newspapers in. Mahalo! 4 4

Labor of Love On Saturday January 26 and February 2, 2019, hundreds of volunteers came together to help beautify Chiefess Kapi’olani Elementary School through a variety of projects. Projects included the addition of over 40 bulletin boards around campus, painting projects, such as the painting of student bathrooms and lockers, a new carpet in the library, and the updating of the basketball courts. This project known as the AFL-CIO Labor of Love Project was special in that the unions gave back to the school with over $60,000 worth of donations to help our school. Mahalo to Cathy Lederer (The Hawaii State AFL-CIO, LCSP Director), the Unions who came out to help on both days, and our CKES families and staff, who all played a part in making our campus look great for our students. 5
