1st XI Captain’s Notes 2019 – Year of the Tree! A landmark season which saw many highs and almost a low. Brent Williams signed off four impressive years as a Tree with a fine Man of the Match performance at Grace Road to win Kegworth’s first senior trophy since 2009. His classy 94 runs made a huge dent in the 165 set by Kibworth for victory. Becoming Leicestershire Premier League T20 Champions and reaching the final 16 teams in the country was an incredible high for a group of players who have stuck together over a sustained period of time, a fantastic evening for the army of fans who came to support and also a memorable day for the club in general as we hosted the Area Finals Day two weeks later. An achievement everyone associated with the club is incredibly proud of. Cup success aside, we had a difficult league season which resulted in staying up on the last game of the season. Something we were aiming to put right in 2020. 2020 saw us play a reduced season after being heavily impacted by COVID-19, the games we played were only possible thanks to the hard work behind the scenes by the Club and Ground staff, every year they make sure it’s as simple as possible to concentrate on the playing side of things. With Jordan Holmes stepping down, last season was my first as Captain, something I’m very honoured to be asked to do. Jordan has been a terrific leader over his term as skipper, always managing to get every ounce of ability out of each and every player. 9
1st XI Captain’s Notes Inevitably Captains and Players will come and go, but the Clubs ethos of playing the best brand of cricket we can and playing for each other will always remain the same. This shone through in the COVID Cup which we entered and ultimately won! New recruits Danny Bryans and Josh Scully fitted in seamlessly and new overseas Matt Montgomery has also been a tremendous signing, we look forward to having all 3 again involved this summer. Scott Moore went up the order to open and had a tremendous short season, amassing 298 runs in 6 innings at an averaging 59, backed up well by the top order Danny Murty (191 runs) Matt Montgomery (183) and Albert Grieve (150). Bowling wise again everyone stepped up in key moments, Seth Jackson’s flight and guile leading the way with 13 wickets at average of 13.15. 2021 will be an important season for us as we look to fight on all fronts and make the Club as successful as possible and continue to build on the last couple of season’s successes. 2nd XI Captain’s Notes I think the less said about 2020, the better. It was a devastating year for everyone, lives lost, families kept apart and livelihoods disrupted. My thoughts are with everyone impacted by this virus in anyway shape or form. We may not know what battle’s people have been or are currently facing, everyone’s experience has been different. I would encourage all members to show compassion and support everyone during the season and beyond. In the midst of the chaos, we managed to play some cricket in the form of the COVID cup. The 2nd XI were faced with a strong group, with 4 of the 5 opposition teams playing in the division above. We managed to reach the semi-final where we were comprehensibly beaten by a strong Newbold Verdon 1st XI. Despite making the semi-final I feel we underperformed. Recruitment from Gareth in the 1st XI filtered down through the club, leaving us with an embarrassment of batting and bowling riches. The 2nd XI never managed to hit our stride, perhaps due to lack of training/playing time and the use of a rotation system designed to guarantee Saturday cricket for all. However, in the grand scheme of things the results were unimportant last year. Instead these games served as a release for everyone, providing us with some much-needed social interaction and time away from the pandemic. Looking to cricket in 2021 it looks to be exciting times for Kegworth Cricket Club. 12
2nd XI Captain’s Notes There is now strength in depth in both the 1st and 2nd XI, providing us with a strong chance of escaping Division 4 West. With this in mind, it has been decided by the selection committee that we will be moving towards a performance based selection system. The aim is to get our 2nd XI closer to our 1st XI, a goal we believe is vital to the longevity of the club. This will provide the club with a better platform for youth development, player recruitment and allow 2nd XI stalwarts to further develop as players. We encourage players to read the new selection policy and embrace the process. Winners beers are better than mid-table beers. Let’s get out there and prove we are better than Division 4 West. Treams.
